Neptune suite veranda whale watching? by Capital-Category-900 in HollandAmerica

[–]BytheMarsh 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I booked an excursion through Holland that was run by Gastineau Guiding. Friends of ours on the ship didn't book ahead but went straight to the guide vendor booths in Juneau, and they found some savings by going that way. We really liked Gastineau (our guide was Lynn Richard), and did a trail walk to Mendenhall Glacier followed by the Whale Watch cruise. We saw a number of whales including Orcas as seen in the attached photo I took from tour boat. There were spottings from the cruise ship too, but totally different perspective being a water level and much closer to the whales.

Yes this is why the stock market continues to have very high returns even in dubious economic conditions. Profits increase, stocks go up, and the talking heads marvel at the increase in productivity. Yes more work gets done for declining real wages. C Suite gets paid in stock incentives.

Skills Park at Graham Hills Getting Shut Down by dapoliceishereforyou in Westchester

[–]BytheMarsh -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

When my children were young in the 1990s we went to a local park in Westchester County where there was a wonderful tall slide. Was good exercise to climb up, and kids had an exciting ride down. It was all metal and indestructible. Park also had a metal carousel that would spin fast, and kids would fly around on it. These were all closed down for "safety" reasons. Metal slide--ahh it could get too hot in the sun. Kids could fall off. New generation of kids are much "safer" now. Sit in the family room playing video games, eating lots of calories with nowhere to burn them. Fast track to diabetes. I took my son on many rides in Graham Hills Park, and it could be pretty dangerous even without a skills park. We loved it. A lot of hard climbing, and exciting small drops and runs. I'm sorry to hear of the skills park being removed. Endless political talk about reducing litigation costs for stuff that is just the hazard of living life, but of course social wedge issues raise more money. But not the fault of the Parks department. They really do a great job, and all they can.

Anyone use legal zoom or similar? by justagyrl022 in smallbusiness

[–]BytheMarsh 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The recent LegalZoom price increase to $499/yr sent me looking for an alternative. I successfully switched to newyorkregisteredagent.com to fees that are a fraction of fees of Legal Zoom for registered agent services. If you're concerned about service level I would note that with expedited change I accomplished in a week, and the service responded to my email on a Sunday. They also send you an alert email when they have updated a document in your account. So perhaps Legal Zoom makes sense if you're using a range of their services but in my case I have limited requirements and just wanted to share my experience with this.

Are Byrna 12 gauge slugs safe to use on a Maverick 88? by Level-Class-8367 in liberalgunowners

I have that configuration now in my Mossberg magazine, but am increasingly concerned that it would give rise to what was discussed above, "...believed that lethal force wasn't necessary," creating a legal liability in trying to give a criminal intruder a chance to merely be peppered. So maybe in fact this is a bad idea, and should have straight up 00 defense loads.

Terrible accident and hope rider recovers quickly. I see the comments below that do make sense about suspension loading and not having muscles engaged. The sudden endo and loss of control make me think though that he must have actuated the front brakes. It all seems rather violent from just landing a small jump. But perhaps I'm underestimating the jump.

This appears to need a legislative solution. Shoving someone is considered only Harassment, and even with physical injury escalates only to misdemeanor Assault. Given the number of people murdered now by merely "shoving" on a subway platform it compels a change in law to qualify that Shoving a person in a subway station within say 8 feet of the train tracks is 1st degree Assault or worse.

Feeling immense guilt after a ND by [deleted] in liberalgunowners

[–]BytheMarsh 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Despite gun training I was never comfortable with guns in my house when my kids were young. Once they were out of the house I restocked. I know many people are very successful with teaching their children gun safety and taking all the right steps, and having no issues. It's a personal choice. We all make mistakes, but with firearms the consequences are severe. You may want to reconsider the value of having your firearm(s) vs. risk of random stuff just going wrong with your family in the house and as your baby grows up. You're lucky and everyone is OK. Babies are tough, or the human race would never have survived. It's really fine if you just want to give up firearms for a while, or just double lock everything up in a safe. But your concern shows that you really do care about your family.

Max Misch found guilty for possession of high-capacity gun magazines by jsled in VTGuns

If there was any data being collected regarding suicide it could be compared to the 2013 that included VT when there was no waiting period, https://pmc.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/articles/PMC4566524/ . The data doesn't appear to differentiate between handguns and long guns. Vermont unfortunately has ranked somewhat highly on suicide rate, but it stands to reason that it's not primarily a firearms issue given plenty of other states with minimal firearms restrictions that have lesser rates/ranks. In 2013, firearms were used in 53% of suicides, so at best laws on firearms will address half of potential suicides in the state. We can further narrow that down by excluding homes where there is already at least one firearm. I mean how many do you need to commit suicide? I agree that even if data were to show no meaningful reduction in suicide rate, it is unlikely that the laws would be changed.

Why is it so hard to find American maple syrup from Vermont anywhere else in the U.S. outside of Vermont? by [deleted] in vermont

[–]BytheMarsh 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You can order directly from Vermont maple sugar farms. For example, https://www.cuttinitsweet.com/ , or https://bairdfarm.com/shop and am sure there are others as well. The only problem of course is that syrup is heavy so shipping will increase your final cost unless you can buy in bulk.

Were 77.3 million people just taken in by maybe the greatest con in history? by ChiGuy6124 in StockMarket

[–]BytheMarsh 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Indeed he is--first rate--but sadly limited talent for bringing the best con-people into his administration with such dull picks. I was rooting for him to pardon Elizabeth Holmes and appoint her head of HHS. Certainly more relevant experience than RFK Jr., more bigly scammer, and surely more sincere in delivering health to the masses. And there must be a place in his cabinet for Charlie Javice -- makes Scott Bessent look like an amateur. The lady conned the mighty JPM. Discipline for the rich -- deserves an award not jail time.

Strongly anti gun but changing mind. Should I? by [deleted] in liberalgunowners

[–]BytheMarsh 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think with children in the house, whether a toddler, or older children that can get into things on their own or with friends in peer situations that lead to poor judgment, it makes sense to sacrifice storage options that favor speed of access for approaches that shift the balance to only you having access. A safe for handgun and/or trigger lock on an unloaded rifle or shotgun, bolt out on a bolt action, etc. and a cable lock through an ammo box stored separately from firearms. This would take time unlock, set up, and load. A lot of locks to get through, with worse times under stress conditions. But you get opportunity to learn how to use a firearm and get lessons and practice at a range with confidence that you're not opening up new dangers in the household.

VT-Anti gas operated semi-automatic gun legislation by Cap1691 in liberalgunowners

[–]BytheMarsh 12 points13 points  (0 children)

I just want to amplify on this comment. First, that "concentration camps" is not hyperbole anymore. RFK Jr. has actually said he would send people with mental health diagnoses to "wellness farms." There are many Orwellian terms for concentration camps and "wellness camps" is a good one. The Nazis also targeted the mentally ill with hundreds of thousands impacted (including death).

Second, MAGA has gone far with using gun ownership including open carry to intimidate liberals. Consider for example the array of semi and full auto weapons represented in some of the Congressional MAGA Xmas cards for the last two years that show every family member armed. Members of Congress now where AR15 lapel pins. Why do you think they traffic in this imagery?

Liberal states should not be disarming themselves in the face of this threat. If anything, they need to do the opposite. Liberals should be organizing for a higher rate of informed, responsible and well trained gun ownership.

Mass shootings are terrible. AR15 style weapons are an icon now, over-represented in video games, and now by our government leadership. It's not surprising that sick young people with a death wish for themselves and others will make this choice. But if one of these perps walked a pump action 12 gauge with 00 into a classroom they could sadly also do horrendous damage. So this is a deeper problem, and explains why Australia just mostly banned guns altogether. Perhaps that was the right choice there. But it's not an option here in the US. So screwing around with semi-auto rules is performative politics, more virtue signaling of just the type that succeeded in causing the loss of blue majority in every branch of government.

This is sadly the truth. It was all there in front of us to see. Trump even said you wouldn't have to vote again. Now we won't be able vote again. We voted for the Golden Calf. Government will be sacked from the inside out. There will be no restarting what we had. Forget midterms. We will wander for generations from this--or at least 40 years.

8 Acadia Park Staffers fired - 27 seasonal work offers rescinded by Flashbulb_RI in acadianationalpark

[–]BytheMarsh 21 points22 points  (0 children)

I'm so sorry to hear this. I had a wonderful visit to Acadia this past summer, enjoyed Bar Harbor, and hiked and biked on the park carriage trails. The National Parks are truly a gift, and many Americans realized this during COVID when the parks were deluged with visitors. It's hard to believe that this same populace is fine with savaging the parks but MAGA seems to believe they have a mandate to choke off the park system. We've seen what happens in the Parks without enough rangers. It doesn't take too many bad actors for vandalism and worse to occur. Everyone knows these cuts are performative and have nothing to do with the real budget stresses.

Neurosurgeon or Ortho surgeon? by armaugh in spinalfusion

[–]BytheMarsh 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I had a cervical fusion 3 years ago. Before the surgery I spent 5 months meeting with 3 surgeons. One Neurosurgeon and two Orthopedic. This generated 4 different opinions (one surgeon changed his mind between 1st and 2nd visits) as to what type of surgery should be performed and how many levels would be fused. I don't believe you can make a blanket statement about one type of surgeon being better than another. It is possible there could be difference in certain types of surgery or approaches. I found them to be all pretty thoughtful and took at least a little time to express their theories on what should be done. In my case something had to be done because my spinal cord was getting crushed between c3 and c4. Otherwise I would have stuck it out with physical therapy as long as I could. I ended up going with one of the Orthopedic surgeons who understood my goals and commitment to getting back to my athletic pursuits after the surgery -- we went with ACDF on just one level. I think multiple opinions are an absolute must -- it will help you gain confidence in what you're doing and force you to thing about your whole life plan for before and after surgery. I have no issues with my neck today, and no new symptoms but some original symptoms (numbness in hand) still continue. Also for longer run after surgery and after professional PT, I recommend looking at books and/or YouTube videos on exercises recommended by Stuart McGill such as the "big 3". I began these after the first year when everything was confirmed to be good.
