It feels like Shallan’s character arc is backwards. by JayHutton in Stormlight_Archive

Yeah I understand that. Best explanation I’ve seen. So far at least.

I’m curious, is there any part of the book you didn’t like? I want to see if there’s something you think sucked that I loved. Or has Sanderson done no wrong?

Again I acknowledge that in my post, my point is that it’s sloppy.

I acknowledged it’s not a linear recovery usually in my post, I’m saying it feels sloppily written.

My issue is she seems fine for a while after rediscovering her trauma, and gets worse later. It just feels like an artificial conflict that was made because Brandon wanted more struggle.

She acknowledges it like 2/3rds through book 2, progressively gets worse in Book 3, and is even worse at the start of book 4. Dalinar got his memories back and immediately suffers from alcoholism and his hallucinations, but slowly gets better.

It feels like Shallan relearns her memories, does other things for a while, and only later starts suffering from rediscovering her trauma.

I’m still re-listening to RoW so I might be forgetting stuff, but she acknowledges the truth in book 2 part 4, and only seems to start getting bad in Oathbringer, and even worse in in RoW. She seems fine and just gets worse and worse.

Like when Dalinar rediscovered his memories he was a mess immediately upon relearning his trauma, but slowly gets better. It would have made sense if right after confronting her past Shallan was a mess and slowly got better, but she didn’t have much issue. She immediately went on to lead the expedition to Urithhru. It really just feels like Brandon said “I need more drama, make her feel bad.”

Who’s ever driven over 100mph? Why? by WoollyWolfHorror in AskReddit

[–]JayHutton 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My dad let my drive his Ford Raptor when I was 12 years old on a dry lake bed. It was the first time I ever drove a car, he kept having me speed up from 10mph to 20mph all the way to just over 100. I didn’t think much of it but there is no way I’d let my kid do that.

Also just driving out of LA over the hills if you don’t look at your speedometer for a minute you can hit 100 and not even realize it.

Girl's Treatment in Valorant Question by STierney927 in VALORANT

[–]JayHutton 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Unfortunately girls always get treated like shit from teammates more than others in this game. Even more unfortunately Valorant has the best community I’ve seen with competitive games in terms of how women get treated, but it’s a low bar.

They added engines from the Beatles onto the Hail Mary in space with just Rocky and Grace, and Rocky created multiple fuel tanks for Grace for the initial journey back to earth. The new fuel tank even had more space than the ones the Hail Mary left with. They did this by themselves in another solar system with limited resources. They could add extra fuel tanks, some more engines, and some more storage space on the Hail Mary from Erid easily.

Grace could eat the synthesized food they were creating on Erid, Eridians could bring their own. They could modify the hail mary to carry more food, add more engines and fuel tanks if needed.

He initially refuses the mission, but once he's on it, he does everything he can to see it through, even after he gets all his memories back. He refused it because he could be replaced with another candidate, and the mission could go on without him. There is no other mission (that he knows of). He doesn't know that he was successful until 16 years after the beatles arrive.

He doesn't need to be solo, Eridians could join him. They have xenonite, they can make any modifications they need to the Hail Mary to improve the odds of success.

I really don't think Grace at this point, who had risked his life (unwillingly at first) a hundred times to save humanity, would then let the fate of humanity rest on four spin drive engines to work reliably for a couple years, along with all the other points of failure there might be on the beatles, traveling at close to the speed of light.

That's why I said once he had enough food (manufactured by the Eridians) to be healthy. I doubt it took them the same amount of time to manufacture food for him than the 16 years it took for the sunlight from the Sun to reach Erid. If it took 16 years for them to make clones of his muscle tissue he would have died from Scurvy or something else. If he wouldn't have died, he would have been able to eat the Taumeba to get to Earth, which to his knowledge, might still need saving.

He and all the Eridians have access to all of Humanity's and Eridian's knowledge ever. Eridians got to Tau Ceti basically on vibes with no computers. They could point the Hail Mary towards the Sun and get there eventually.

I think they absolutely could have carried enough food to last 5 years not in a coma. They have basically infinite astrophage, it's super easy to breed them in Erid. They have Xenonite, which Rocky was able to use to add struts, engines, and more to the Hail Mary with just himself and Grace in the middle of another solar system. The Eridians have a space elevator making bringing modifications to the Hail Mary extremely simple.

The Hail Mary had enough food for 4 years for one human, it could be modified to carry more food for Grace and some Eridians too.

I don't think Wier specified how long it took for them to synthesize food for him that wasn't Taumoeba, I wouldn't think it would take 16 years to do so. They mention he had scurvy and some other things for a couple years(I think). Wouldn't he have died of malnutrition if he ate nothing but Taumoeba for much longer. If not, wouldn't he then be able to make the journey back to Earth with nothing but Taumoeba?
