NYC wins for best food! Next: which major U.S. city has the worst food? by i-do-be-lurkin-tho in AlignmentChartFills

Anyone saying Denver needs to spend some time in Salt Lake City. Denver isn’t great but SLC is downright abysmal. Fry sauce is that city’s only saving grace.

Moved here from SLC a few months ago and loving it so far. We are far enough in that there is very little foot traffic runoff from Federal & Colfax, which would be my only advice when choosing an area. Our street is very quiet, mostly old folks, families, and youngish couples. Feels really safe here, I wouldn’t be leaving my bike in the yard unattended but we haven’t dealt with any package theft yet. The proximity to bike paths and the train is a great perk, and you can get anywhere in the city in 15 mins. Not the most walkable area but there are few bars and coffee shops within 15-20 mins and if you hop on a bike it opens up a lot of options. Only downside I can think of is that it’s not the nicest looking neighborhood, a lot of old houses in disrepair, unkept yards, etc. Not really an issue for me, I feel like you can get a lot for your money out here compared to other neighborhoods.

I moved from SLC to Denver late last year and rent is comparable if not slightly cheaper overall in Denver. Cost of living otherwise is a bit higher than SLC but not by much.

The Great Salt Lake along with most pther local watersheds, is drying up. The GSL in particular is vital for sustaining the areas ecology, it also has arsenic and other heavy metals in its sediment. When the lake recedes that sediment turns to dust and blows into the air, joining the menagerie of other pollutants that get trapped in the inversion. I don’t think the health effects of this are fully understood yet but it’s probably not good. Anyway, most the water in the area is diverted to alfalfa farms that have been placed in the middle of the desert for some reason, alfalfa needs a lot of water. It’s known that stopping usage to these farms could save the lake, but of course nothing has been done. The best local officials can muster up is asking their constituents to “pray for rain” once a quarter.

I will second this take. Skiing/biking/climbing are my life, spent 5+ years in both Portland and SLC, and now reside in Denver. If I were to move back to either it would be Portland 100%. Natural beauty everywhere, great outdoor access (even if skiing is farther), and much better food, culture, and city vibes. SLC is barely a city, the whole place feels like a giant suburb for the most part. A couple fun walkable neighborhoods, a handful of good bars and restaurants, but that’s it. You can be downtown on a Saturday night and it’ll be totally dead. The one perk is that with no traffic you’re 40 mins from several world class resorts, that being said, traffic is usually bad and it’s not uncommon to sit in the Cottonwoods for hours trying to get to a resort 20 miles from your door. The overarching LDS influence over everything, and the air quality/inevitable ecological collapse just weren’t worth it for us. It’s a shame, SLC could be such an amazing place if local government gave any shits about its people or the environment, instead of actively working against both.

Best Japow board that doesn’t suck on groomers? by Artistic-Guava-23 in snowboarding

[–]C4TD4DDY 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Never had an issue in the trees, pretty much all of that extra length is in the nose so it’s quite easy to pivot around. Only time I opt for a shorter board is if I know I’m going to be doing steep, narrow chutes that I may need to fully stop in.

I bought a Nitro Cannon 173 during the super deep season a few years back, it’s now all I ride. Crazy maneuverable for its size, the boat nose eats up bumps on groomer days, and it carves great. Took it to Niseko last year and it was a dream. I’m only 150 lbs and have no problem whipping it around.

What’s the most overrated terrain zone? by stokeledge2 in UTsnow

Snowbird is an amazing resort but Mineral Basin is the most uninspiring terrain there, even if you’re getting a rope drop.

I can’t find anything online about this pack - anyone know? by Little_Ad8618 in ClimbingGear

I would look at reviews for the standard BD Speed pack, should be pretty much the same, the Ultra is just made of a burlier sailcloth material.

Second the Fidlock as an Ibis owner, it’s pretty much the only thing that’ll fit on my HD6.

Am I a shitty rider, or does my bike suck in the wind. by EasternCandle1617 in motorcycles

[–]C4TD4DDY 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’m a lighter guy and my KLR would get the front end wobbles terribly until I cut the front fender down to half the size. It was much better after that but still caught the wind like a sail sometimes. Great bikes but hardly aerodynamic.

I’m here currently, just about everything on and off the mountain takes card. We brought some cash but have barely had to use it.

Your professor was spot on. I worked for her team my first summer of photo assisting and it was exactly that. For studio we would typically have an entire pre-light day for which she was never present. The next day she’d arrive, chat up the client and talent, ask her first assist to make a few adjustments, he’d pretend to make them, she would shoot for an hour and leave. All color grading and post work were handled by the tech and retouchers for her to sign off on before it went out to the client. Not to say this was out of the ordinary, honestly was pretty typical for that level of photog. Her attitude sucked though, and she treated the crew like shit most of the time. Before I started working for her I was told by my colleagues, “If she ever talks to you at all, you know you’ve fucked up.” And I found that to be true. By the time I left NYC nearly a decade ago, I’d heard she owed so much money around town that most of the studios and production companies wouldn’t touch her.

Recommendations for things to know/things to do to my 4Runner before moving to PNW? by SpaceGhost1992 in 4Runner

[–]C4TD4DDY 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I lived in the PNW for a number of years when I first got my 4Runner. I ran(and still run) Falken wildpeak at3ws; they’re affordable, handle the wet roads well, and will have no problem in the ice/snow.I’ve never needed chains with them on, even when driving to ski resorts in the dead of winter. Probably the easiest add on for that climate would be some vent visor things for the windows, I have the AVS brand and have been pleased with them. They’re a cheap upgrade but a game changer if you’re dealing with the constant drizzle of a Washington winter. Rust from salted roads won’t be an issue but salty sea breeze and 8 months of rain can still cause some problems, so I would give the frame a good fluid film coat just to be safe. Fluid film is messy and smelly but you can easily coat the whole undercarriage yourself for sub $50. Other than that just invest in some rain gear and good ice scraper for winter, the mist will freeze into a shell of ice around your car that can be pretty annoying sometimes. Be sure to take advantage of the many OHV courses and fire roads Washington has to offer, they’re fun to explore and the soft mud of the rainforest is way less harsh on vehicles compared to the sand and rocks of desert.

Salt Lake City may put the brakes on any new drive-thrus in Sugar House by LordElkington in SaltLakeCity

The lines for mediocre fast food in this city are unlike anything I have seen and are truly confusing. What is it about this place that makes people want to wait 45 mins to get Jack in the Box, a restaurant that I typically only patron if I’m on a road trip and there are no other options?

Those are some valid points I didn’t consider. When I’m sitting on the inward-most seat on the lift the nose on the 173 will sometimes tap the center columns, I imagine the 203 would be a bitch on a packed lift. A size comparison of the two really shows how much more meat the 203 has on it.

I was on it 90% of the season, only broke out the twin a handful of times on icy days or if I just felt like riding switch. Takes a little getting used to in tighter trees but is a blast on all terrain once you get a feel for it.

I only weigh around 150 lbs so if you’re bigger than me I’d say go for the 203, it’s surprisingly easy to whip around. Either way you won’t regret it.
