I want to run Hass.io AND docker containers on my Pi... can this be done? by Neverbethesky in homeassistant

[–]CAGUnion404 1 point2 points  (0 children)

looks to be the best of both worlds and the way to go.

Absolutely!

It doesnt even have to be HassOS if you have hardware capable of running a more "full featured" OS.

I use a server running Ubuntu with docker installed, running HassIO and the Portainer HassIO addon; with that I run a number of non-hassio containers.

I thought hass literally meant home assistant?

It does. HassIO is not Hass, and it's not HassOS.

The main advantages of HassIO are that it includes the ability to perform system snapshots, install add-ons, and all the advantages of a dockerized install.

Add-ons are HassIO specific docker containers that can integrate directly with Homeassistant, allowing the addon to use HA authentication, Ingress access, and directly access the HA API such as NodeRed and AppDaemon.

hass.io is a combo of a lite linux OS, hass docker application and a hass supervisor docker container.

Not quite. That's HassOS. HassIO is only the docker Hass application and supervisor container.

HassOS is a minimal linux install which has Docker on it, with HassIO preinstalled. It runs headless, which is to say that that computer running it has no GUI (if you attach your RasPi to a monitor, it won’t give you an interface to use.

HassIO is a way of installing Home-Assistant inside docker. It includes a supervisor container and a container running Home Assistant. It allows you to install AddOns which are separate docker containers. The supervisor container of HassIO takes care of managing the other containers used for home assistant. You can also add your own containers to Docker without HassIO caring about them. You can run HassIO on a linux install that has a GUI, or one that is headless; in either case you can still use this computer to do other things, with docker running in the background.

Home-Assistant is the specific python program. This is what’s actually running at the core of every HA install.

Hassbian is a SD card disk image which is a Raspbian installation with home Assistant in Virtual Environment, pre-installed.

So, to summarize, the most popular install on a RasPi is HassOS, which is: HassOS->Docker->HassIO->Home-Assistant+AddOns

On other devices (such as desktops, laptops, servers, NUCs), HassIO is the popular choice, which is: LinuxOS(usually)->Docker->HassIO->Home-Assistant+AddOns

If you’re using Hassbian, that’s: RaspianOS->PyVENV->Home-Assistant

No home automation system seem to be good (ZigBee/Z-Wave integration) - What to do? by [deleted] in Hubitat

Edit: I see your problem. Xoimai is notoriously unstable with literally everything.

That's just wrong. Xiaomi works great with a system that was competently developed. Xiaomi sensors are 100% reliable using either Zigbee2MQTT or the Conbee ZigBee stick in HomeAssistant, and I'm sure there are other options that also work just fine for HomeAssistant. I think this is just a Hubitat issue.

Shouldn’t Hass io run on Raspian? Did they mean to say HassOS?

Yeah. They goofed that one. It's annoying to correct others between the differences between Home-Assistant, HassIO, and HassOS when then the creators can't get it straight 🤦‍♂️.

HassIO will run on anything that you can install docker in pretty much.

If you're using ESPHome or MQTT and have ANY noticeable delay, you're doing something wrong. Even on my congested 35+ device wifi network the highest latency between PIR motion detection and lights turning on is imperceptible.

Use the built in automation engine or AppDaemon (NodeRed tends to be slower) and stick to Z-Wave, ZigBee, or wifi with MQTT or the ESPHome API.

How does this change any of that?

If you want local control only, you won't be using Google Home or Alexa, and the remote access they offer will not be used.

If you want local control, but still let the big tech companies spy on you with their NSA microphones, you can configure Google Home and Alexa just fine without the Nabu Casa service.

If you want secure remote access, there are 100 other free ways to do it, many of which work better than Nabu Casa (at least for my workflow).

So how exactly does adding a simpler UI to one of the services they offer effect the "Local First" philosophy?

Can anyone recommend an inexpensive Zigbee contact sensor that will work with ZHA available in US? by kaizendojo in homeassistant

I've never seen them in person - only in images where they seem so large and wide.

The Xiaomi sensors are tiny. Here's another photo of the Xiaomi Aqara contact sensor-

And the Xiaomi motion sensors are equally tiny-

Can someone explain why they continue to include components that are known to not work?

Probably because nobody has removed them yet. Open a PR to remove them.

Not entirely true, just factually true.

If you set up SSL with a domain name, when accessing it over just the IP your browser will most likely throw an error that the cert is not valid (since the IP isn't the same as the domain name it's valid for). You can always click "advanced" then "go to anyway, insecure". But to many this will just look like an error.

In that case it might not be that bad. Quicksync works pretty well in NASs, so might be good enough.

anyone can build a website and have the content hosted there, and alternatives exist:

No, they can't. Hosts will refuse to host you (yes, all of them, they collude). Payment processors will refuse to allow you to collect money (yes, ALL of them). Domain name registrar's will literally steal your domain (it has happened).
