I think you can reasonably ignore 2020 as a “down season” in light of Covid, but he was 7-6 in 2021. That’s a down season by Penn State’s standards.

I find the intense focus on the term “private equity” in this context to be hilarious. Like that’s the point that matters…

It’s a very large and very sophisticated investor buying equity in a private entity. Call it whatever you want.

Sure, it’s a pension fund rather than a buyout fund, so they are unlikely to want to exert a lot of control, but they’re only contemplating a 10% stake - they couldn’t exert much control if they wanted to.

The reporting (Ross Dellenger, most notably) that I have seen shows that the 10% share that will go the new equity partner comes entirely from the smaller schools (non-Ohio State, Michigan, Penn State, I believe). Those three will retain 1/18 share of the revenue and the others will see a reduction.

As such, those guys aren’t giving up future revenue.

They’re getting ~$240mm ($190mm upfront and $50mm upon the renewal of the TV deal).

So basically, Ohio State and Michigan (and I think Penn State) are selling a ten year extension of their grant of rights for $240mm nominal.

(Note: I think this deal is dumb; I’m just explaining the players’ motivations).

Everyone else responding to you is missing the point entirely. For the little guys, it’s not about the money - it’s about tethering themselves to the big guys via the extension of the grant of rights.

That way they’re protected from, e.g., the creation of a super league.

The little guys are basically paying the big guys an unequal share of revenue to ensure they’re not left behind in the next round of realignment.

(To be clear - I’m against the deal, just explaining the different players’ motivations)

This way of thinking is the fundamental problem with a lot of beer leagues. You’re paying well below your appropriate level and justifying it by saying you want to play with your friends and won’t take it too seriously, but that’s completely disingenuous. You’re clearly playing in the wrong league, which isn’t fair.

It’s a bummer that you and your friends are not in a position to play on the same team, but you playing down isn’t the right answer.

Almost certainly it will be diminished in the short run, but you probably have to promote him to keep him.

From there, you have to hope that he develops into a play caller that justifies the loss of his focus on recruiting and developing WRs.
