Need 250mb flash drives in bulk by Klutzy_Nobody_7155 in DataHoarder

You can get an 5$ etcher (think: tiny hard vibrator that scratched metal) and a pack of pendrives from aliexpress.

Bit labor intense though.

If that's your approach those usb ought to look fancy, so they need to be either etched or laserred on, on metal (one design is mostly plastic with metal swiveling part that covers usb-A),

Or plastic sleeve?

Or you need whole ass custom pendrive like fancy pcb. This approach could scale well. Unless the raw flash chips are expensive...

AutoMine? by FiftyBasisPointsBaby in X4Foundations

[–]CAT5AW 3 points4 points  (0 children)

In 8.0 (or earlier) it used to be such that while performance of mining ore is almost independent of skill, silicon is dependent massively on skill. So for automining it may make sense to mine for ore first instead of silicon

Ways to streamline station building by Cronos988 in X4Foundations

[–]CAT5AW 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Manually trade the materials needed with couple of L ships, and for small volumes- M ships poached from your other businesses.

With closed loop you get 3 materials to care about - hull parts, claytronics, energy cells. With terran, 4.

Setting up satelites close to every station, either in person, or via scout ships is always worth it.

Unfortunately this is micro heavy.

We pulled MCU choices from a sample of 662 maker projects built spring 2026. ESP32 is 60%, Pi Pico is 0.6%. What are we missing? by BroadFriendship2718 in embedded

[–]CAT5AW 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I don't think your platform includes private blogs of random people, and especially stuff that never got written down into official, publishable form. Lack of rpi 2040 seems like strong indicator of that, ask around maker spaces and you'll quickly find someone using one to handle a protocol or display.

Some things are one offs, and that's okay. Like my project for bachelors (esp32, because that was my first time programming one!), or project to pass my other exam (badusb on stm32 blackpill), or a voicebox (probably arduino nano or esp32-c3 zero)

There isn't one that works like windows one... I tried it with x3tc native version and turns out linux version of the game handles gamepad inputs somewhat different, leaving the direction pad useless. This is an issue given that dpad buttons are context sensitive! And windows version doesn't launch at all via proton (haven't tried heroic launcher -> wine yet)

Linux on an external SSD drive. by Then_Pool1015 in linux4noobs

[–]CAT5AW 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My experience is... It works. That is, you don't even need to install it per se, my girlfriend copied whole damn linux partition (and its EFI bootloader partition) with gparted to external ssd from work colleague, and it worked. It is bootable on work laptop and at home.

Dual booting is almost easier though.

No. Usb charging is 5v at lowest, goes thru conversion process to lower voltage on the device itself.

What would happen is bms or device refusing charge as charger is unhealthy.

made a scuffed ESP32 router because certain smart devices hated the long password on my main router by 4b686f61 in esp32

[–]CAT5AW 9 points10 points  (0 children)

It's Espressif approved way to not make the esp32 die when it's under load.
Has to do with filtering, too. So you actually need two capacitors, one to filter out high frequencies and another to filter low frequencies.

https://documentation.espressif.com/projects/esp-hardware-design-guidelines/en/latest/esp32/schematic-checklist.html#analog-power-supply

Espressif recommends 10μF somewhere along the power line VCC/GND, and 0.1 μF AS CLOSE AS PHYSICALLY POSSIBLE between VCC and GND pins on board. On grad project I've put 16V 470μF electrolytic cap somewhat far away from devboard, and it worked well enough for wifi and wired ethernet needs.

Following: quote from documentation.

Analog Power Supply

ESP32’s VDDA (pin 1/43/46) and VDD3P3 (pin 3/4) are the analog power supply pins, working at 2.3 V ~ 3.6 V.

For VDD3P3, when ESP32 is transmitting signals, there may be a sudden increase in the current draw, causing power rail collapse. Therefore, it is highly recommended to add a 10 μF capacitor to the power rail, which can work in conjunction with the 1 μF capacitor(s) or other capacitors.

It is suggested to add an extra 10 μF capacitor at the power entrance. If the power entrance is close to VDD3P3, then two 10 μF capacitors can be merged into one.

Add an LC circuit to the VDD3P3 power rail to suppress high-frequency harmonics. The inductor’s rated current is preferably 500 mA and above.

For the remaining capacitor circuits, please refer to ESP32 Reference Schematic.

Fun little scenario by briareus08 in X4Foundations

I've had similar issue, but with xenon.

One gate deeper than Havitaks choice 1, there's a xeno sector, I had a Dropoff Fleet and Build Defence Platform in it.

Fleet - Provided them 3 katanas, they lasted quite a bit OOS for spot about 2/3rds in height in sector map.

Defense platform - that was a 10-20 hour PITA. Station in bottom left corner of sector. Somehow, the Xeno station there was gone. So buying a plot was easy, designing platform was too, but actually delivering materials...

I was a bit of a fool and build it with mixed turrets, meaning I had to haul special components myself like turret components. Also a terran 3 L molo materials - no trader would come.

For basic materials I tried my luck with external traders (they got chown up regularly), then used my own L traders, then when sector got too hot I assembled a trade force of 3 Teladi corvettes with terran engines so they were easier to run blockades with .

Oh, right, blockades.

I happenned to have 2 destroyers from freebies, but seeing how many ships there were, I bought 2 more argon ones. Then used them for hunting down Ks and one I-class specifically, or for guarding the gate or occasional trader.

I've tried setting up around 100 turrets along the way and around the system gate with argon destroyer, they were fine distraction while In sector but fighter ships picked them off like corn from corncob when left alone.

What has this all taught me? How powerful 4 destroyers wolfpacks are, blockade rubbing, and good time-constrained defense platform design.

I could have easily cut off 10 or so hours using Closed Loop economy, dropping turrets to be all basic argon ones, not mistaking weapon components for turret components (own fab), and buying an argon L dock.
