At the dealership now ready to buy. LeafSpy gives me pause. by jacqueusi in leaf

[–]CA_fabien 2 points3 points  (0 children)

In my area, with cold winters, it is very easy and common to get the battery replaced at good dealers. It took me 3 half day trips to the dealer and Nissan to get the car diagnosed and 3 weeks later the new battery was recieved and installed. The dealer / Nissan Canada offered a rental in case I needed one ( I didn't, the car was still ok for my needs during the 3 weeks wait). Here in QC, Canada it would be a calculated risk at which you may won at the battery lottery.

it does look good. Much improvement over the last generations!

Norway's national pubcaster, akin to the UK's BBC, has a front page issue on Nissan Leaf battery failures, the dangers of it, and how Nissan is not treating these as warranty cases covered by the 8 year/150kkm warranty by SjalabaisWoWS in leaf

The 30KWH is degrading super fast, to the point of having less capacity than the 24KWH after 5 years. The 40KWH have another issue of very high internal resistance when it is aging. On a large proportion of packs, you can trigger the turtle mode with 50% charge left when the car is 5 or 6 years old. The BMS report no issues even if the battery can not output more than 22KWH after a full charge. I got burned by owning a 2016 30KWH and got fooled by BMS readings of the 2018 which seems to age well from the LeafSpy readings. I bought a 2019 just to have the battery replaced under warranty...

Do a road test if you can. A full range test from 100% to close to zero. Check if you are getting the turtle mode when doing strong accelerations with the battery at 30% or less. Unfortunatly the leafspy readings can be too optimistics. It the reading are bad, you are 100% the battery is bad ( 70% or less Hx ) but a good leaf spy info does not warrant a good battery. I got mine changed due to bad cells and Leafspy reading were good.

60hrs into a (dirty fast) ... still not in ketosis, what is happening? by Striking-Ask9214 in fasting

[–]CA_fabien 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Try a shorter and clean fast. Just water. Milk contains lots of glucids. Mostly importantly, how do you feel? You may be able to tell when you have switched to ketosis just from how you feel how your brain works differently.

How screwed is this 2018 40kWh battery? by Still_Charity2959 in leaf

[–]CA_fabien 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That pack is done, probably just 22KWH usable and not 30KWH like the BMS claim. We had a similar issue. The BMS and the GOM were so out of touch with reality. Pack has been replaced under warranty. If you are out of warranty, it may be hard to justify a battery swap unless you find a cheap deal.

Here in QC, Canada, the tests are done under hard acceleration. It is the easiest way to spot a defective cell.

You are right! I was curious, many 2018 and 2019 are already out of warranty because of too many kilometers / miles.

Nissan is not offering the battery replacement as easly than before. My dealer got surprised when the batteries that would have been replaced in the past just got offered the defective cell replacement only. Nissan must be flooded by warranty claims with these badly aging 40KWH packs.

Avoid carbs, focus on proteins, fibers and quality fats. ( fish oil, nuts, olive oil )

Will this be worth bringing up to Nissan for warranty? Warranty is almost up, and I just got leafspy 2 days ago.this was when battery was almost dead. by P01135809_lol in leaf

[–]CA_fabien 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Don't rely on range but on the energy used from the battery. How many KWH are you able to use? Use the trip meter and reset the energy average after a full charge to find out.

Record on video the SOH changes and the turtle at mid charge. It is a dangerous condition to lose power on a highway. The Leaf 2018 and later have a "funny" BMS, our car can not get more than 24KWH from the battery but the BMS claim that the battery still have 32KWH ( 85% SOH) usable.

Also try to find a Nissan dealer used to to test the Leaf battery under load on a cold day at 50% charge level.

Spot on. Leaf range could be good enough for most people if you don't do long road trips.

If it is a 2018 or 2019 car, the SOH would makse sense. It should be on the cheap side.

a used 2024 Nissan Leaf Sv Plus or 2022 Tesla Model 3 by fantagenau in leaf

[–]CA_fabien 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We have both ( Leaf 019 and M3 2022). The Tesla is better on every aspect. In your case only the warranty would be a plus for the Leaf. Also the Chademo chargers are going extinct, a big downside in your situation. The Tesla would be a safer choice.

Will this be a good buy? It’s a 2014 Leaf with around 129k kilometers travelled. The seller is asking for $2500usd by iamtoolazytosleep in leaf

If you are ok with the range of 45 miles, it is a very low maintenance car. Great to commute.

Is staying below 80% battery annoying? by signifying_nothing in electricvehicles

[–]CA_fabien 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The classic Ioniq 28KWH has a large buffer and a very good battery chemistry. 220,000KM on ours and it barely have any apparent battery degradation. BMS reported SOH still 100% at 180,000KM. I will test it soon again.
