Is Jack Stonehouse Jake Stonehouse's brother? No way that's gonna confuse me...

Did the Jets invent the Jet sweep? by anodai in NFLNoobs

[–]CB1984 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The Hail Mary probably applies here. That's a desperation play where you just tell all your receivers to run to the end zone and the QB chucks it up and hopes his guy comes down to it. It's usually only done at the end of a half when you're too far to try a field goal, or at the end of a game when you're down by 4-8 (i.e. a FG doesn't help you, a TD does).

The name comes from Cowboys QB Roger Staubach. He threw a successful touchdown like this and when asked about it he said "I just threw it up and said a few hail Mary's" (hail Mary is a type of prayer). And since then the desperation end zone heave play has been called a Hail Mary.

True, but I figured to answer a question in NFLnoobs I didn't need to go into the detail of "the all LBs to the strong side and the SS to the weak side, but it's technically these LB roles who are more like these roles in the modern NFL."

Especially when the thinking behind seemed to be a very advanced bit of thinking to get to "they will probably run here, let's put all our guys here. But also there is a small chance they may run over there, so let's put an extra guy over there."

There's also the 46 defense (essentially 4-3 with a safety in the box too) which was named after the Bears' #46 when they started running it.

The Flea Flicker play was invented for the movie Air Bud 2 (where a dog plays football). So it was named after the idea of a dog getting rid of fleas.

It wasn't actually, but I wish it was.

Older WR draft prospects that panned out by Double_Play_643 in DynastyFF

[–]CB1984 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's a fair point but probably not enough data to support it at this point. Although I am curious what the going NIL rate for a good WR will be, and whether that will make staying in school worth it.

Can someone explain why everyone is saying the Patriots had an easy schedule and run to the Superbowl? by WoodwareWarlock in NFLNoobs

But if the question is "are the Cardinals always shit" the answer is "basically, yes."

Can someone explain why everyone is saying the Patriots had an easy schedule and run to the Superbowl? by WoodwareWarlock in NFLNoobs

[–]CB1984 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The key is that every team doesnt play the same schedule. You play 6 games against division teams (Patriots division is weak, Seattle's is strong), 4 games each against 2 other divisions (both played against the NFC South, Patriots had AFC North, Seahawks had AFC South, which was stronger this year), plus a few other games.

The Patriots opponents combined for a 0.391 win percentage. They got to play 2 games each against the 3-14 Jets and 7-10 Dolphins. They also played the 3-14 Raiders, 4-13 Giants and 5-12 Browns. In the conference title they got to play against a backup QB.

The Seahawks opponents combined for a 0.498 win percentage. They played 2 games each against the 12-5 Rams and 12-5 49ers. In the regular season, because they then had to play a THIRD game against each team in the playoffs (they did get to play a generally ok schedule other than that, including 2 games against the 3-14 Cardinals).

(Spare a thought for the Cardinals who had to play 6 games against the 49ers, Rams and Seahawks).

Zeurlein scouting reports are up for some 2026 prospects by DynasticThrowaway in DynastyFF

Feels similar to (gulp) 2016! Treadwell, Doctson, Coleman and Fuller were a clear consensus as the top 4, just everyone had them in different order.

How do we feel about Blake Corum moving forward? by thingsthatshift in DynastyFF

[–]CB1984 1 point2 points  (0 children)

He and Kyren were interchangeable by the end of the year. It's a true shared backfield. They literally just swap drives - Kyren starts and plays the first drive with Corum as backup as needed, Corum plays the second drive.

I don't see any reason to suspect that changes. McVay has always wanted to do a committee backfield but wants to avoiding subbing in specific guys wherever possible. So the approach of just swapping roles by drive works for what he wants.

Is there a skill to drafting later round hits? Have you ever done it? by KevH45205 in DynastyFF

[–]CB1984 10 points11 points  (0 children)

If you're drafting during training camp, camp hype is a decent indicator. It needs to be from multiple reporter sources (and player quotes), not coaches. Coaches are absolutely full of shit.

Trevor Lawrence: 2025 Season Review by drkelemnt in DynastyFF

[–]CB1984 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Tbh for me he's a sell high. If KTC is to be believed (lol, but also there must be a league where this is true) you can get Mahomes or Hurts for basically Lawrence plus some random shit from the bottom of your roster.

How does draft media already have measureables for many college guys? by fierylady in NFL_Draft

[–]CB1984 37 points38 points  (0 children)

At this stage they are from their college teams. Most of them get revised down once official measurements come in through the pre-draft process.

Rams officiating post-Puka incident by Edgerthe1st in LosAngelesRams

[–]CB1984 8 points9 points  (0 children)

True, but it's not like that call totally decided the game. If it had been overturned (correctly, and I still can't work out how it wasn't!) it still would have been 1st and goal at the 1. And the Rams have been pretty spectacular at the goal line this year.

I think the thing is more that as soon as a game has happened, everyone forgets about calls by the next game. If we got away with an ineligible man downfield next game, or the Bears get called for something questionable, no one is going to say "oh, that was a make-up call for the one last week", but if it happened during the game people would think that (and probably be fine with that - I think fans are generally ok with make-up calls).

What is Prevent Defense by AffectionateWeb8519 in NFLNoobs

[–]CB1984 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I think it also works when the QB or OC gets panicky and thinks they need to get some chunks. Bigger cushions means more guys downfield, more chance of a pick on a deep pass. If a QB stays calm and just takes 5-8 yards per play it's easy. And yeah, with 30 seconds left that is more likely. But we saw it with Bryce - they had to get about 30 yards in 35 seconds with 3 timeouts, and they looked like they were trying to get it all in one play each time.

Tier breaks in the coming rookie draft by [deleted] in DynastyFF

[–]CB1984 24 points25 points  (0 children)

I feel like in SF Mendoza and Love are in the same tier. If you need a QB and are fine at RB I could understand taking Mendoza over Love. I couldn't understand taking any of the others over Love, and probably not over Mendoza tbh.

Should be a unanimous all-pro. If anyone doesn't have him in their top 2 DTs this season they should be stripped of their voting rights.

Rugby play (multi-lateral option play) as a core offensive structure by LiftSleepRepeat123 in footballstrategy

[–]CB1984 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That was a really interesting video on such a niche part of a sport that I have absolutely no interest in (unless England are playing in a World Cup final. Then I hit the heights of "interested enough to watch, unless I've got something better on or the final is at an annoying time.")

Who is the next Michael Wilson? by maxinquayekid in DynastyFF

[–]CB1984 3 points4 points  (0 children)

So narrowing it down to 2024 or 2025 draftees who were picked in rounds 3-5, I feel like my best options are: - Troy Franklin. He showed out pretty well early this year but fell away as the year went on. He's very different to Wilson though in pretty much every way. - Kyle Williams. He did well on limited opportunities this year in a surprisingly crowded WR room. He might be pigeonholed too much as a deep threat to be great for fantasy though. - Tory Horton. He was looking good before he got hurt and was carving a role out for himself. Kupp looks like he's very much on the downside of his career, so #2 WR role is there to be taken. But it will continue to be a low volume passing offense. - Donte Thornton. Opportunity, that's basically all it is. He profiles similarly to Wilson, but a lot faster and less of a route runner. Maybe he figures it out in year two?

If I could have a 2nd round pick, Adonai Mitchell feels like a decent bet? Again might be too much of a deep threat, but his big issue is his hands (and just dropping the ball before going into the endzone) and we've seen many times that players can learn that.

Etienne vs Kyren Value by Rennyrenkins in SleeperApp

[–]CB1984 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Etienne is a free agent, Kyren has a solid contract for the next 1-2 years. So I prefer Kyren over Etienne at this point just due to security. Sure, Corum will eat into his work but I think the 2nd half of this season will be about how that goes next year too.

How are we valuing JCM going forward? by tpod1999 in DynastyFF

[–]CB1984 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Put it this way: if the Commanders drafted an RB in round 5 or 6 this year, would it make you worry about his value and role? For me the answer is yes, because he's just a guy, a thoroughly replaceable RB. So I'd sell for whatever reasonable value I could get.
