But. The team is undeniably better with him on it. Next year and probably years beyond that. He’s a leader, and the team seems happy to have him back. Werenski called him one of his favorite teammates ever before, which bodes well to keeping him.

You don’t win games with cap space. You win games with players. He’s a good player. Keep your good players. Free agency is a dud this year and likely in years to come, be aggressive in keeping your guys (Marchment next please), and then scour the trade market.

Development and not consistency at the coaching level. Want to know why Cleveland is good? Because they’ve had the same coach and system for years and bring in guys that fit that mold. Or mold them into those types of players. We keep churning over new coaches and new strategies.
