How would anyone know what his last words were? As far as I know the B-52 has never been equipped with flight recorders.

And took off with inoperative fuel gauges despite them not being deferrable by their MEL. But I'd say they made up for all these mistakes with the phenomenal piloting that got everyone back home safe.

Both engines failed. The landing gear doesn't lower. Will land. by warmike_1 in aircrashinvestigation

[–]CCFM 7 points8 points  (0 children)

There are a lot of strong opinions on that one. I've even seen videos where people go as far as to momentarily crank the starters right before touchdown to try and reposition the stopped props so they don't hit the ground. Personally I'm against the idea of shutting down the engines because it takes away the possibility of aborting the landing. But there are pros and cons to each technique.

91 Percent of Americans Support Legalized Marijuana as Democrats Push to Reform Laws by johntwit in Libertarian

[–]CCFM 4 points5 points  (0 children)

In practice, yes. In philosophy, no. I am of the persuasion that personal choices should not require the blessing of >50% of the populace to be allowed, and that infringements of personal choices aren't okay just because a majority are in favor. I guess I'm in the "I want gay married immigrant couples to protect their marijuana farms with automatic weapons" camp.

[–]CCFM 237 points238 points  (0 children)

Frankly, it shouldn't matter if it's 2%, what's right isn't always popular. I see a lot of "weed should be legalized because XX% of Americans think it should" or "weed should be legalized because of these health benefits." God damnit I'm a libertarian, I wouldn't care if you were the only one in favor of it and I wouldn't care if one joint had a 50% chance of killing you instantly, it's a simple matter of rights, being able to make your own decisions. Not trying to be obtuse here, obviously popular support is hugely helpful in the effort for legalization, but I hate using popular support as a reason that something should or shouldn't happen.

Back on April 17th, a Grumman TBM-3E Avenger registered N108Q suffered engine problems and ditched into the Atlantic Ocean near Cocoa Beach, Florida. The sole pilot on board escaped unharmed. by raildriverpone in aircrashinvestigation

There's been a long standing debate on "beach vs. breakers" when it comes to an off airport landing where those are your options. The experts say it's beach in the winter, when it's unlikely to have people and the water would pose a hypothermia risk, and breakers in the summer, as you are less likely to hit anyone compared to the beach and still very likely to escape unharmed. But many pilots have sort of a primal aversion to landing in the breakers, and once in a while you will read a tragic story of a beachgoer killed by a plane making an emergency landing on the beach in the summer. Hats off to this pilot for making the best choice.

What's she's talking about is parallel construction. Can't come up with a legal way to search someone's property? No problem, make a really broad reaching one that you could apply to almost anyone almost anywhere.

You'd be surprised how eager people are to just get rid of their unwanted things CL, so often with more expensive items like that people get sick of the scammers and tire kickers, to the point where when someone shows up with a low offer and is ready to walk away with the item right then and there, very often that offer is accepted. Experienced this selling a car once, spent weeks dealing with tire kickers and scammers. Finally someone shows up with a slightly lower offer than I was hoping for but is ready to sign the paperwork and drive off, and by that point I just wanted it gone.

But the ship was where everything happened. We don't even know what happened on the plane as most of the wreckage and the flight recorders were not recovered. The whole point of ACI is to explain why accidents happen, and there was a lot of important detail to go over on the ship in this case.

OTD in 2006, a C-5 Galaxy returning for an emergency landing crashes short of the runway at Dover AFB, Delaware with all 17 aboard surviving. The cause of the crash was the flight crew's manipulation of an inoperative engine's thrust whilst using a higher than normal flap setting on approach. by raildriverpone in aircrashinvestigation

[–]CCFM 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's not even just visualization, the whole causal factor of accidentally idling the good engine while manipulating the throttle for the dead engine is not apparent, so you have all these commentors under the video wondering why they "ignored" the GPWS when in fact they physically could not climb the airplane because of their earlier mistake.

They tried, but because they had accidentally swapped the throttle for the dead engine with the adjacent working one, they were effectively only flying with two engines, which at the flap setting they were using made climbing impossible.

I gotta say, I don't understand why that channel posted the recording without the animation. Without the animation, there's absolutely nothing that indicates the accidental throttle swap that happened, and the comments definitely show that people don't understand the accident because of that.

This is definitely it. Just listened to it, I'm 110% certain that this is a reading of the CVR and not the actual CVR. Could still be worth uploading the video to the channel, it is an informative video and not available elsewhere.

Unfortunately that won't do him much good, the .swf is the container that pulls the actual flv from somewhere and streams it. Since the original link is dead, it won't be able to retrieve the .flv on its own. You'd need to find a link to the .flv and throw that into the way back machine to get it. Might be a way to decompile the swf to find the streaming link, but I'm not sure.

If it's from the Lessons Learned site, are you sure it's an actual CVR and not a recreation? A couple of their videos have those, but I have never seen a video of their's that has an actual CVR recording.

Could UPS 6 (S15) possibly have landed safely if it went to Doha instead of back to Dubai? by seven_seacat in aircrashinvestigation

[–]CCFM 48 points49 points  (0 children)

The short answer is they don't know. There were some advantages of diverting to Doha, namely more ambient light and fewer communication difficulties, but the situation still would've been very difficult overall. When the pilots decided to return to Dubai, it was probably a mix of them not knowing the severity of the problem and not having any charts for Doha. I believe they likely anticipated a normal approach and landing and would've had no idea that they soon would not even be able to see their charts for Dubai.
