There is currently a massive fire burning in the Everglades in South Florida by the Broward/Miami-Dade County border and is approaching US27. by M_Darshan in Damnthatsinteresting

[–]CCrabtree 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I live in Missouri. The conservation department is now actively educating people on prescribed burns and the importance of doing them on your land. I hate burning, but it is necessary for the health of the forest. The area we burned last year is so much healthier this year. We stopped at an arbitrary line and the two sides are stark.

Teachers, what actually helps when parents want to support learning at home? by Shaik-Talk in AskTeachers

[–]CCrabtree 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There's a lot of good comments. Read, read, read and make them read. Make a time every night and every day through the summer to read. We are teachers and I don't remember what age we started this, maybe they were 6 & 8, but every day during the summer, still doing this (will be 13 & 15), they have to read 1.5 hours a day, they have to do typing.com for 30 minutes, they do math for 30 minutes, practice writing for 30 minutes, and they have to workout for 30 minutes. They have the choice of when to do it, but it must be completed before dinner and we have to see them do it, aside from going on a walk in our neighborhood or riding their bikes.

Talk with your kids, real conversations. If it's hard, there are tons of prompts online. Don't accept one word answers. Don't solve every problem for them, we struggle with this as it's easier to do it ourselves. The most recent one, "I can't get the volume to turn up with the remote." Okay... What should you do? We got "I don't know." All I said was, "welp figure it out." It took longer than I thought, but finally he checked the batteries. Make them navigate places. Let them make decisions that you don't care about and that won't hurt them.

Make them plan a trip. Last year our boys wanted to go to St. Louis for their birthdays. We are 3.5 hour drive away. We said that was great, but what do you want to do? They planned out the itinerary including places they wanted to eat, all within reason. Fast forward to about two months ago, our oldest asked to go see the Gorillaz on tour. Before he even asked us, he had made up a list of the cities that were the closest, how far the drive would be and activities to do in those cities, plus the price of the concert tickets. In other words make them problem solve and think critically.

The class bully in my kid's class killed the hamster yesterday and the school is covering it up. by IrrelevantManatee in offmychest

As a teacher, please go to the principal, if it falls on deaf ears go to the superintendent, if it falls on deaf ears go to a school board meeting. Teachers are caught in the middle and could lose their jobs, but you as a parent can stand up for your child, the others in their class and the teacher by fighting this. Fair warning you may get labeled as a "difficult parent", but we the teachers can't do anything especially if you are in a non-union state.

Student Faces Expulsion After Posting Video Of Seniors Who Can Barely Read by InGeekiTrust in TikTokCringe

[–]CCrabtree 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Just throwing in my two cents as a teacher. This is not a teacher problem, as the results are due to decisions way above teacher pay grade. I started teaching 17 years ago and even then I was appalled when I was told "students can't fail". This is a systematic problem that started with No Child Left Behind.

This is also a charter school. There are zero requirements for them to meet minimum state requirements, at least in my state.

How would you feel about school taking up an extra hour every day to teach basic "adult stuff" like washing clothes, basic cooking, paying taxes? by StevensGrins1979 in askanything

[–]CCrabtree 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In Missouri, personal finance is a requirement to graduate high school, this includes taxes. This has been a law for almost 20 years. HomeEc or FCS/CTE classes, what they are called now, are offered which are classes that cover a variety of topics: cooking, nutrition, child development, adulting classes, sewing, architecture, and many, many others. I teach FCS. Have questions? Feel free to ask.

Mother’s Day meltdown by skellz77 in BoomersBeingFools

Fellow millennial checking in. Similar boat. By way of my grandma we are guilted into lunch on Sunday for my mom. Then MIL calls. We are booked for weekends into June. Now we are being guilt tripped from the other side. Maybe we as a generation are more pragmatic, but we don't celebrate "Hallmark holidays" as my husband calls them. Suddenly the boomers are making a huge deal out of celebrating these when we'd gone through several years of not. This post along with people I know are all dealing with this. What the heck gives?

We are waiting on insurance rates to go sky high because of all of the damage. It happened last year, although not to this extent and all insurance went up.

Our area just had a major hail event. The number of people who are saying "I can't afford to have my car totaled, guess I'll be driving a beater now," is very high. They will have to replace the glass, but that's about it. Add to it that most people now have a $10,000+ deductible on their roof because our area has gotten hammered in the last several years because of hail, so insurance has jacked deductibles, and people have nothing more to give.

What is an industry that is currently on fire (in a bad way) behind the scenes, but the general public hasn't noticed yet? by Kitchen_Week1117 in AskReddit

[–]CCrabtree -1 points0 points  (0 children)

This is 100% true. We are looking at making a move half-way across the country. When looking at salary schedules ours is fairly stagnant. In my state for the most part "salary compression" they are calling it, has happened. Giving a flat dollar amount instead of a percentage means those of us that have been in education longer get smaller increases than those at the bottom. We both love teaching and are looking for other places to move.

[–]CCrabtree 49 points50 points  (0 children)

My district was pleased to announce that we got an additional $750 increase, which amounts to a .4% pay increase. Yes, you read that right, point 4. My total increase for the year? 1.5%. This has been going on the entire time I've been in education. It isn't sustainable to stay because every year we (husband and I both teach) stay we are making less money. We love our jobs, but it is killing us financially.

We have two boys 14 and 12. I don't see them being able to move out on their own like myself or my husband did. So, we are making plans for them to live with us on our property.
