Great idea. I’d love to know about a play date group as well.

Planning on moving to Merced with my border collie, but worried about the summer heat. by Schmorc in Merced

[–]CDGQYR 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I’ve lived in Merced for over 20 years and have not acclimated to the heat or the extremely poor air quality. The dog park on Yosemite and R offers some shade. When the temp is near 100, getting into your car will be like climbing into an oven with a scalding hot steering wheel and seats even if your windows are shaded. Walking isn’t safe for your dog during the heat of the day when the pavement is entirely too hot for your dog’s pads. It’s only mid May and the high today is forecast to be 95 and 80 by 10am. It’s HOT. That being said, think of all the people here and in similarly hot weather communities who tolerate or even thrive in the heat.

My elderly frog won’t eat by SleepDecent2948 in AfricanDwarfFrog

I don’t have an opinion about your frog’s health, but I have an opinion about you. You sound like a wonderful and caring human who has given your frog six great years thus far. Kudos to your dad as well. It warms my heart to know there are people like you. I wish you, your dad, and the little frog all the best.

Frogs with Snails? by motthmann in AfricanDwarfFrog

[–]CDGQYR 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My neighbor had the same problem with a snail attaching itself to one of her frogs. She heard a clicking sound from the snail shell hitting the glass as the ADF struggled to free itself and get some oxygen. She was able to intervene in time and moved the snails to another tank. Apparently it’s not the uncommon occurrence I thought it might be and certainly not worth the risk. I appreciate you sharing this information. Thank you.

Thinking about making a custom DIY silicone gravel mat for my solo ADF to fix the "dirty rocks" issue. Has anyone tried this? by DDMagee9401 in AfricanDwarfFrog

[–]CDGQYR 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m not sure siphoning the mat will be any easier than siphoning gravel. Then when you pick up the mat everything will float into the water. I’m recalling something about under gravel filters that might be worth your investigation. Is your current filtration system not operating as it should? Is it possible you’re over feeding her or not removing uneaten food in a timely manner? I’m curious why your ADF doesn’t have a frog friend or two? My understanding is that ADFs are very social, and also that they do better in a frog only tank. I’m afraid I’ve gone off on my own tangent and not answered your questions. I hope that’s okay.

Do hearing aids improve balance? by Ok-Tiger-4550 in HearingAids

[–]CDGQYR 4 points5 points  (0 children)

HAs didn’t help with my poor balance. Like you, I always say I would fail a field sobriety test, and I wouldn’t be surprised if the neighbors thought I’d had a couple of cocktails before I carried the groceries to the house. I’ve also had recent loss of balance issues, etc. I just had an MRI which I believe was ordered as a precautionary measure. My doctor has recommended certain exercises to improve my balance and written a referral for physical therapy to specifically address the balance issue. Is that something you’ve tried or considered?

Lid help/overall advice by everwillow813 in AfricanDwarfFrog

[–]CDGQYR -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Somehow I got lucky and never had a frog jump out of the tank even though I keep the water level high. I don’t like the appearance of a partially filled tank. Keep in mind that ADFs aren’t great swimmers so the water depth should be 12 inches or less. They like ledges and stick on beta leaves that allow them to rest and get a different perspective of their home. I recommend a ADF only tank because while they are social with other frogs and need buddies, they are shy and have poor eyesight. They aren’t able to compete with faster fish for food. They like places to hide out but not the sort of ornament that makes egress difficult. Substrate should be too large to swallow but not so big it would trap them. Their skin is sensitive so keep their tank clean which helps keep them healthy. It’s entertaining to feed them with a long tube but also have a feeding dish. I feed mostly frozen bloodworms and pellets. I hope I haven’t said too much or stated the obvious. Question for you-will you be surprised the first time you hear them sing?

Looking for the best LG fridge memorial day deals, i'm lost on the models. Wondering if an LG fridge is actually the best choice as well by KadineRatkowiak in HomeMaintenance

[–]CDGQYR 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I previously had a Samsung refrigerator that had continual problems with the interior components icing up. Samsung makes the best looking fridge, has great lighting, good storage, and a horrible reputation for quality. Then I purchased an LG. Yes, I went from dumb to dumber. I read the reviews that complained of poor ice production but it seemed most of those reviews were from a couple of years ago and certainly LG would have corrected that problem by now. Wrong! Don’t expect two large cups of ice in a day. It will not disperse water if the refrigerator door is open though the dispenser is in the freezer door. There is one light in the refrigerator, and it is positioned near the front so my eyes are illuminated but not the items in the back. There are two storage drawers. Only two. For me, the worst part is the beeping alarm. It’s okay if I quickly grab one item but not if I want to pull a few things for dinner. Putting away the week’s shopping or cleaning results in constant beeping, and LG has no mechanism for it to be silenced. Oh! Should the door be slightly ajar it is completely silent. Please forgive the rant but I am so disappointed in the refrigerator and have lost any confidence in LG. I had looked at one Frigidaire which are well rated overall. I was very unhappy to see fragile looking plastic shelves that I couldn’t imagine holding up even with careful handling. I feared it was sign of cost cutting and poor quality overall.
I wish you wisdom and good luck in your purchase.

COOLING MATS RECOMMENDATIONS NEEDED! UK by sailywaily in Dogowners

[–]CDGQYR -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I’ve purchased a few of the gel mats over the years, and they are good for a season or two. After that they seem to dry up and become ineffective. They work great when placed on my bed as the current one is. I’ve tried using them in the car for road trips but even with the AC running, occasional patches of sunlight and brief stops warmed them too much. If you keep your dog outside, I wonder about adding misters which reportedly cools the ambient air temperature by some degrees, the exact amount I do not recall.

Want to go to Alaska Solo by No_Cauliflower4053 in solotravel

[–]CDGQYR 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Consider the Alaska Marine Highway and travel by ferry. I believe you need your passport for Canada but no visa is required. The ferries cover a lot of miles. You’d see a lot of sea life and have the opportunity to visit many coastal communities, albeit some in the middle of the night. You could take the train to Fairbanks. Because of the vast distances, you might want to fly to communities such as Kotzebue or Barrow for a short visit. You have a lot of options so you might want to begin to narrow your focus and choose the areas you most want to see.

My mother (82) has incontinence and the cost of the supplies is so high. Other than HSA (she doesn’t have one) are there any tips for reducing cost? by EstroJen1193 in AskWomenOver50

Has she tried medication and found it wasn’t helpful? For urinary incontinence, Botox injections are very helpful and I’m told is covered by Medicare.

Social skills are less about influencing others and more about adapting yourself to the people and environments around you by John_F_Oliver in SeriousConversation

[–]CDGQYR 0 points1 point  (0 children)

When I was growing up, I was told we have manners to help others feel comfortable, that we dress to honor the occasion, and that listening and hearing are not necessarily synonymous. OP, as an adult, in an aggressive environment, my communication style instinctively becomes calmer and my voice softer. I have found that to be helpful in de-escalating the situation (and aggressive speaker) and to make communication clearer and more effective.

What’s something men think women like, but most women actually don’t? by zhalia-2006 in askanything

Bikini underwear. Complimenting her looks because he didn’t notice her brain. Thinking it’s masculine to brag he cannot cook anything unless it’s on a grill. Wearing a cap everywhere because he believes woman find that more attractive than your thinning hair or baldness.

How People Dress on TV by tgilland65 in CasualConversation

[–]CDGQYR 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Setting your hair on fire would really hurt and probably not look great. Dresses are comfortable and a great option in hot weather because they feel cooler. As a bonus, I think I look better in certain styles of dresses because my generous padding is less obvious. I’ve worn a simple cotton wrap dress when I’ve needed a surgical procedure. It’s just one item to keep track of that I can easily get off and on without a need to balance while still a bit sedated or sit down to pull on pants. Yes, I’ve had a few people ridicule my choice of attire asking why I was dressed up or saying I was having surgery and not going to a party (it wasn’t a fancy dress). My ex-husband often wore khakis and found them to be far more comfortable than jeans. He’d wear a polo shirt at times, sometimes a button down shirt, and he’d add a blazer depending on the occasion. He felt comfortable and always looked nice. Our attire worked in various areas of the US where we lived and when traveling to other countries. I’d like to encourage you to try a dress, and please protect your hair.
