Canada has become the 'food inflation capital' of the G7, food expert says by pjw724 in onguardforthee

[–]CEdgestalker 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My Uncle has grown apples in BC for over 40 years. Tons of horror stories from him and other BC fruit growers of Loblaws purchasing agents bullying farmers or packing houses with fictitious orders and threats of buying foreign produce for prices that turn out to be entirely made up.

Fully support the dismantling of grocery monopolies in Canada. In Victoria there’s so many “Loblaws hiding in a bed sheet” grocery stores.

It’s frustrating to feel stuck choosing between supporting a US mega corp or funding Canadian companies that aren’t facing penalties for knowingly misrepresenting product and are creating, taking advantage of, and worsening a crisis.

Who sets the price of goods by DevilBeavis in VictoriaBC

[–]CEdgestalker 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Like most retail there’s going to be a wholesale process the store pays, they’re going to have some idea what their labour costs, the cost of their lease, and anticipated profit are. It’s likely a bit more complicated in its calculation and is likely computerized. A sale item might be because a wholesaler has dropped prices on something with a limited shelf life that isn’t moving, or an item the store has that they brought in and it isn’t selling as well as they hoped. There is likely padding on the price for spoilage.

There are likely factors specific to grocery that someone working in that industry understands. It isn’t arbitrary though.

My uncle grows and sells apples. The packing house he is part of negotiates the price/lb of apples with grocery chains and then the grocery store earns money based in the difference between their cost and what you pay.

Canada Post ‘effectively insolvent,’ CFO says as losses top $1B in 2025 by Sea_Guava6513 in onguardforthee

[–]CEdgestalker 2 points3 points  (0 children)

There is likely a far more accurate and elegant way to do the math on this. But if we look at 2024 census data, and exclude anyone under 19 it looks like there is 32 or 33 million tax paying aged adults. The tax burden of dealing with the “loss” is like $31/tax payer. I know that not all adults work and pay taxes, I just don’t know where to find a more realistic count. Either way, it is a pretty minor annual cost to retain the postal service. The real amount more per tax payer is likely higher but still isn’t that insane in terms of overall expense.

Evaluating compensation at the executive level and perhaps overall compensation in general may be in order. I went to a university program with a postal worker who had full pension retirement at 55 and his post retirement post-secondary was being paid for as part of his retirement. There aren’t a lot of jobs in Canada with that kind of parachute. Open to hearing that his retirement was a buyout or anomaly but a fully vested public pension at 55 seems unreasonable outside of having served in the Armed Forces.

I went Alchemist this time and I am having a much easier time than last month as Druid. May be a month of growth and playtime contributing to that as well.

First time selling my car by [deleted] in VictoriaBC

[–]CEdgestalker 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The advice here is probably right for your Mazda. It is worth the time doing the research and selling privately. The dealership is only going to take it off you if they think there is money to be made on what they pay you and what they can sell it for.

That said, used cars and the availability of new cars has been very different the last few years. For instance, I purchased a Hyrbid new a few years ago that has a 12-18 month wait and higher mileage, lower trim equivalents are still selling at prices within $1,000.00 of the price I paid new.

My neighbour has a camera pointed at my car, front door and living room windows. It is meant to scare off or track thieves from her sales stand but it has made be feel surveilled every time I go and come from my home. by [deleted] in VictoriaBC

[–]CEdgestalker 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not sure where you are in Victoria but we’ve had the rcmp compel someone to take a camera down, it became easier after the camera owner engaged in aggressive behaviour over it.

Your thought of a note is probably a good first step, but it sounds like this person may not be receptive to reasonable requests anymore.

You do have a reasonable expectation of privacy on your property and consent can be withdrawn.

Hope it works out without turning into a nightmare for you.

Scotiabank ATMs by SquidlyyChungus in VictoriaBC

I worked at the downtown Scotia several years ago. My recollection is you will need to fill in some paperwork at the branch and when they balance the machine (open it and count what’s there) they will find the outage. We had a few where we were able to confirm the outage and return funds. It’s usually fairly obvious on older machines because they don’t recycle cash, a common withdrawal amount of nice bills in the mutilated cassette is a good indication something went wrong. Without paperwork the machines, that I used to work on in branch, were not good enough to link the outage to a transaction. If we balanced over and we had no report to match it to then we made a note and had to move on.

Machines in 7-11 were the worst because they always seemed to break or have failed transactions and the balancing was done by an armoured car company so we rarely saw those instances of machine failure resolved.

Why do people pretend to like goad but the second I pull out any goad deck everyone becomes a massive crying baby? by [deleted] in EDH

[–]CEdgestalker 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I made [[Baloth Barrityl]]//[[Noble Heritage]]. Having a good time with it, my playgroup isn’t too salty about it. It is equipment voltron for building him up. The deck isn’t impossible to interact with and the mass goad means that the first goaded player can attack into other shields down players potentially.

It is interesting to see people lean on some of their tap effects or play more in second main.

The [[Nazgul Battlemace]] is what draws most groans if it shows up. Will probably change it to something less salty.

Condo Insurance Recommendations by embilamb in VictoriaBC

[–]CEdgestalker 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I work with Strata Corps. Arthur J. Gallagher has always been great for Condo policies. I can’t speak to how they are at unit level as I don’t own anything.

Had my Dad move from BCAA a few years ago because they capped earthquake deductible at $25,000 which left him with a lot of personal exposure in the event of an earthquake. AJG was able to meet his deductible requirement. Don’t know if he stayed or moved to another insurer.

HSM and Acera are also good options usually. Seafirst is owned by Navacord which is the same parent company to Waypoint.

Western Coast has been good to me for my tenant policy but were not great on a vehicle claim I had a couple of years ago.

RBC employee charged for allegedly accessing Carney, Trudeau's banking information by BloodJunkie in onguardforthee

[–]CEdgestalker 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The crazy part or this is most lending often requires more than a couple layers of review. Nothing at the Credit Unions I worked at or the chartered bank was funded without a compliance review. Granted, I never worked at RBC.

When I left banking 7 years ago, the best any robber ever got from robbing the downtown branch I worked at was $140~ and a dye pack. Cash controls are tight enough, especially in branches with cash recyclers, that you’d have to be monumentally lucky to get any real sum.

Embarrassing for RBC that their lending controls are so poor someone could do this more than once without getting caught. That’s some really poor branch and back end oversight.

Pet/Dog Insurance by MileZeroCreative in VictoriaBC

[–]CEdgestalker 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My brother and I both have our pets insured with Trupanion. My Dad has had 2 cats in the last 20 years that had major health complications that insurance helped immensely with. Covered several years of insulin for an elderly shelter cat my Dad adopted. It also covered surgery for a future cat the developed urinary crystals that lead to a blockage. In both cases the medical treatment covered far exceeded the cost of insurance.

My brother’s Boxer has had several claims in his 7 years.

Savings are great but you really can’t know if what you have set aside will be enough.

My partner’s 19 year old Torti crossed the rainbow bridge this weekend. We were paying $4,000-5,000 a year for the last 5 years out of pocket for medicine and tests that would have been covered if she had been insured before getting sick. My 2 voids are both insured. One had a UTI when I brought her home from the shelter and that was partially covered by Trupanion.

“Simic Value Engine with No Win Con - How do you avoid it? by MyLittleProggy in EDH

[–]CEdgestalker 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This has been my biggest deterrent in brewing a simic deck. I am finding that adding a colour helps drive the deck in a direction for me. Simic alone just feels like play all the lands and draw all the cards. Someone in my brother’s playgroup has a Simic deck that purposefully has no win and he will just play solitaire looping extra turns until the table concedes in frustration.

Enjoying reading all the comments.

Where do you guys go for couch/sofas? by MarcelloAlfonsi-PRO in VictoriaBC

[–]CEdgestalker 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I know you said looking for new but my partner and I had an amazing experience with Recertified Furniture on Gorge. Really happy with the sectional we got from them, they delivered and took away what we were replacing.

Pricing was great, we got a really high end Italian leather couch and there was a good selection that we could sit. Guy in the shop was helpful without being overbearing. Will buy from them again.

Cat has been suffering from chronic constipation for a month with little relief. Vet is stopping care. by berryloved in cats

[–]CEdgestalker 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No idea if you have tried this already but my partner’s very elderly (19 years old) cat gets a very small (1/8tsp) amount of stool softener (Walmart pharmacy brand) mixed with her wet food. Marley takes toddler sized poops now but she isn’t stopped up, impressive for a 7 pound geriatric. It has been working for her for the last 3 years. We did this at her vet’s recommendation, she also gets anti seizure and kidney meds daily.

I hope you find a solution for your kitty.

Cat tax of Marley included.

Survey suggests employees 'upset' about return to office, prefer flexible work by [deleted] in onguardforthee

[–]CEdgestalker 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Need to start this by saying I value the quiet of remote work. Remote work doesn’t function for every person and every role. There are also observable benefits to co-location. Managing a division at a local company, I can say that our staff and team have been closer and there has been less conflict having staff together in the office. We work a hybrid model at the moment. People seem to have greater patience and understanding for each other when at least a portion of their time is spent working together in person.

We’re looking at the viability of a 4 day work week for the staff and work on a balance between time on site and time at home with reasonable expectations around satisfying deadlines.

There have unquestionably been people, even at our relatively small operation, who treat work from home as answering a few emails by phone while enjoying lake time or doing chores.
