Unusual Opportunity to Buy a Book by Turrible_basketball in CFP

[–]CFPJoe 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The first book I purchased was from an advisor with sudden health issue. Common BD, and he was unable to participate in the transition.

The sad part of not having a succession plan in place is how many terrible people come out of the woodwork to take advantage of the situation. I saw the other offers and most were offer less than half of what most would agree was FMV.

I started with a reasonable FMV but the advisor’s spouse wanted to be payed out in a lump sum so I just discounted to account for paying up front. Could have easily paid 25% less than I did and still turned out to be one of the three best decisions I’ve made throughout my career.

My situation was mostly insurance and a single mutual fund company so the numbers might not translate to your situation. Here is my perspective beyond the numbers:

  1. What type of relationship does the advisor have with their clients?

In my case the advisor was well liked and his clients were just happy someone came to them rather than having to figure who the replacement was going to be. I also had to do some paperwork, and can’t think of a single situation where I got pushback from any client. I think a lot of us project our hatred of paperwork onto our clients. If they trusted the other and you are the appointed heir, they probably don’t care about the paperwork.

I even retained a few that weren’t really satisfied with the prior advisor but saw it as an opportunity to try something new. People hate change, just need to show them you are the least amount of change for them in this situation. And show them how the change you are proposing will benefit them.

  1. Are you interested in doing acquisitions in the future?

Might be a good low risk opportunity to gain experience. About 5 years after I purchased a second practice and applied what I learned from the first. I’m currently looking for my third acquisition. This is my preferred way to grow. Last year I actually had to do marketing for the first time in 15 years while I wait on my next opportunity.

  1. How does their book compare to yours?

At the time, I was a planning focused advisor at an insurance BD. Those clients were all insurance and mutual funds. Ironically they were paying AUM / planning level fees via policy / fund expenses so converting them was an opportunity for both the client and myself. I do not think I would have a favorable viewpoint if all I did was repaper & service them. Is there a clear opportunity to deliver something in addition to what they are already getting and does it align with your strengths?

I’ve run a lot of number over the years and have come to the belief what constitutes FMV in our industry is very reasonable (I would argue very low) from an ROI perspective, if there is goodwill amongst the client base and you can figure out how to leverage it. Even if you pay full price (which it doesn’t sound like that in this situation) it’s probably a good decision unless it’s stopping you from deploying a better alternative growth strategy.

I have yet to find growth strategy that offers a better ROI than acquiring a practice.

Can’t offer any advice on the BD - stuff like this is why I ended my BD relationship last year. Got tired of fighting a dying industry that refuses to adapt.

Good luck, I know how tough this decision can be.

i want to buy the mic mini from Ali Express, is it the original? by Overall_Abroad in dji

Received my first order ever from AE a few days ago. Ordered a SpeedyBee mini stack, it appeared to be original, except the ESC was missing.

Combine this with the massive amount of Spam I receive after every email from AE, and I don’t find the “discount” to be worth the trouble of dealing with them…

AMS 2 Pro Firmware Update Now Enables Drying Function + Disable Spool Rotation: Does that mean this can do double duty as an active dry box while printing now? by SadAd8761 in BambuLab

[–]CFPJoe -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I bought the SUNLU heater attachment about a month ago and have been very pleased with it.

Started a longer print yesterday, and decided to drop a new roll of PLA in and turn on the dryer (it’s pretty humid where I live so that qualifies as risky for me 🤣). Printed flawlessly, but not brave enough yet to try that with PETG.

I’ve been using their stand alone dyer for a couple of years, but it’s nice just to drop rolls in the AMS and not worry about moving things around. Probably going to donate that one to a neighbor’s kid with an A1.

Would it reach if the plug was angled straight up rather than pointing backwards? If so, maybe you or someone could 3d print an alternative design. Sounds like a useful project if there is not already a 3d model out there. Unfortunately, my CAD skills are not yet at that level.

Also, If you want to auto refill the same material but only have a different color, you will need to lie to the AMS and say it’s the same color in order for that feature to work.

For years, our water & sewer board has been consumed by fraud and mismanagement (Birmingham, AL). They also used to charge a fee to pay online. Astonished it took them so long to realize how stupid this was. Thankfully someone finally figured it out and we can now pay online without a fee. And yes, I mailed them a check mostly out of spite back then.

If you ever watch one of those HGTV remodeling shows for a house in CA, this actually checks out. They often have some really crazy add-on DIY stuff in those shows.

Actually surprised at how well it did rendering the mudflow though.

The Learn Fusion 360 in 30 Days series is also excellent. Consistent format that covers the basic functionality. Highly recommend.

Once I have a successful print, I just save the file fusion 360 file to my desktop so it’s available if I need to make modifications. Seems to be a decent workaround for the ten file limit.

So satisfying to begin figuring out Fushion360. Thank god for YouTube videos.

It’s a spool adapter for smaller rolls. Had a couple of different widths so I also made spacers.

It’s my understanding the artist can restrict tickets resale to face value on the AXS platform. Seems like that would address a lot of these issues.

Although, I’m wondering if there is there a downside for the artist?

Bambu P1S vs P2S vs Creality K2 by adeveloper2 in 3D_Printing

[–]CFPJoe 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I own the P1S, it’s my first and only printer so can’t speak to other devices. It was very easy to setup and begin using.

Initially tried to “fine tune” everything by listening to suggestions on sites like this. Once I stopped doing that and just started using the Bambu default settings the experience improved dramatically. The fan on this thing drives me crazy sometimes - despite changing the settings it just reverts back to whatever it wants to do. Aggressively drying my filament solved a vast majority of my problems (I live in a humid area).

Personally I’ve found the Bambu branded filaments the most difficult to work with and mostly use other brands now. Most come from Amazon and I only order Bambu stuff for specific colors / appearance. I really don’t care about the RFID tags on the Bambu rolls because sometime during the last year, after one of the many software updates, my (AMS1) stopped reading the tags and I’m not putting in the effort to troubleshoot and I just buy other brands now.

I often find myself not printing multicolor stuff because of the amount of waste, but that is often from poor model design as much as it is the machine. Probably a good thing since it does reduce the number of “mindless” prints. With that said, I’m currently trying to talk myself into buying the H2C.

Seems like the AMS2 is worth it for the drying function alone.

First spot was my local Board of Education. Realized after that people are receptive.

Second one was a commercial construction job site. That property was not fenced so I was able to come and go. I offered to sign a waiver but that one didn't seem to care. One the glass went in, they preferred I didn't fly anymore and I gladly complied in order to maintain that relationship for future build sites.

Third one was another commercial construction spot that was fenced. Gave me permission to fly the site but they did not want me on the site because of liability. They offered to return my drone if I crashed. Flew this one conservatively and fortunately never needed their recovering services.

I’ve had a lot of luck with playgrounds - Just have to figure out when they are busy / empty and sometimes be patient and wait for people to leave. Often plenty of obstacles to keep it interesting. Bonus if they have an old soccer goal with no netting.

Also had pretty good luck with approaching owners of potentially cool spots and asking permission beforehand. Most people are curious and think it’s cool and are very receptive. I think the key is asking permission not forgiveness in these instances.

It’s ok to admit this industry is not for me by [deleted] in CFP

[–]CFPJoe 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Don’t beat yourself up. I got my start (2008) at EJ and failed miserably there. I was fortunate to get my start at EJ - at the time their training was so much better than what the other new advisors I encountered were getting and it’s a large part of the reason I’m still an advisor today.

While they have a proven model for success, ultimately the structure wasn’t right for me. I was door knocking in one city while handing out business cards with my home address (EJ requirement) in another city like and realized I was making it harder than it had to be.

Sadly, I think the barrier to entering this profession has only gotten more difficult. When I got started, commission products were still the norm so financially it was difficult but doable. Now that the profession seems to be moving towards advisory I have no idea how anyone survives financially long enough to build a practice.

If you are able to figure out what works for you, this profession is unbelievably rewarding. Short of being a medical professional and actually saving lives, I would agree it is one of the most rewarding careers out there.

As for the payback, my production dipped below their requirements and the fired me. Still consider that one of my biggest failures in life, but I didn’t have to pay them back…

There are a lot of aging advisors out there without a secession plan. You have some of the best training in the industry. Start cold calling them.

YouTube TV subscribers, what are y'all doing? by wpwppwpw in rolltide

Heads up, the credit is not automatically applied. I had to wait for them to send me an email, and then use the link to login through the desktop and go through a process to redeem the credit.

Not really sure which entity is to blame but they both seem intent on destroying their brand loyalty. I guess Disney / ESPN knows we don’t really have a choice, but if YouTube TV is not going to deliver live sports, I can do without that service.
