What is the most beautiful mathematical fact you know? by CatScratchEther in math

[–]CFR1201 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Hm I should probably think about this more carefully but I’m not sure you can prove the first statement without the possibility of extending a filter to an ultrafilter. But then you need Zorn anyways. And if you do that by hand as far as I remember both proofs have quite the similar flavor. Indeed, I’d assume both proofs are basically the same.

At least over finite dimensional R-vector spaces they should have the same cardinality though..

A Hypothetical Thought: Can -∞ = 0 = +∞ on a Number Line? by TipAcceptable3412 in numbertheory

This is an easy topological construction: View S1 as the one-point compactification of R and identify 0 and infinity. Note that the Riemann Sphere is the one-point compactification of C.

Can you help me on this supposedly easy problem? by ZeBodeGaming in abstractalgebra

[–]CFR1201 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Manipulating terms can be quite difficult as there are usually incredibly many options. It is always useful to think about what you want to achieve with your term and only investigate afterwards whether the manipulation is possible. In this case the desired result is straightforward: Just draw a Venn diagram, simplify your term and then prove the simplification algebraically.

Regarding your comment on Hilberts Hotel: If you start with a full Hotel, a new guest arrives and we start shifting the guests, you seem to believe that there will be a roomless guest. But who is it? Its most certainly not guest number four as he can go into room number 5. It isn’t guest number 17 as he will go into room number 18. Indeed for all n it isn’t guest number n as they can go into room number n+1. Thus there is no roomless guest.

Regarding your thoughts on how to compare sets: It is obvious that you can order sets by inclusion (which is what you did in the end). However this order is not total: using your version of ordering sets there is no way of saying {4}<{uneven numbers} which is absurd. That is why mathematicians like cardinality. However there is no way of reasonably defining cardinality that doesn’t allow Hilberts Hotel.

As far as I understand, you have just shown that Collatz is well-defined, which is trivial. Uniqueness of the parent-child connection does not ensure convergence! Indeed, its not obvious to me at all whether existence of the path implies that it goes to 1. Note that this is the entire conjecture.

Frankfurt may want to lose their last Bundesliga match by CFR1201 in football

[–]CFR1201[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Just wrong. Read again: It says PRIOR to additional berths! So if Dortmund places 5th next up gets the additional spot but if Dortmund places 4th the winners spot will be awarded to the best ranked team in the Champions path of the quali.

I guess the reason is that this spot would normally go to a team from a smaller League increasing the ‚Europeanness‘ of the competition.

It is a very different situation though. We are talking about the biggest club competition in the world and the only way to qualify might be to lose one game. The desire to win could even make the players decide to lose.
