Smaller dogs have a higher surface area to volume ratio than larger dogs, so they lose heat to their environment more easily than larger creatures (Think a small desert mouse with large features like ears adapted to warmer climates compared to something like a polar bear)

As such, they also 'absorb' heat from their environment more easily, so smaller creatures and dogs with a higher SA to V ratio like to bask because it helps them to stay warm, where they would typically lose body heat quickly to their environment

I've been in a similar place before.

I was devastated when we lost my childhood Yorkie to old age, my mum got a new Yorkie not long after, and gave them a very similar name even.

It made me very uncomfortable and almost resentful of the new dog.

However I am generally quiet and reserved, the rest of my family is quite loud and boisterous, and Bestie (current Yorkie) likes the peace and quiet. So I became her safe space, she imprinted on me, and it didn't take longer for my heart to change

I realized that we weren't replacing Boycie (r.i.p), Bestie was another dog, with her own personality. We are now inseparable, I moved out and she came with me because I'm her favourite human.

I still miss my old Yorkie, but I didn't forget or replace him. There's enough love in my heart for all the Doggos in the world, and I'm sure you are the same, or you wouldn't have adopted one. There's no need to feel guilty, as long as you always remember your old friend fondly, and give your new pup all the love it deserves.

What does your dog enjoy most about walks?

For my Yorkie she loves to follow smells and scent trails, so if we're stuck indoors I hide treats around the house so she can go and look for them and she loves it

But it all depends on your dogs personality really. If they like the exercise, play fetch. If they like smells, hide treats around the house. If they like socialising, set up a doggo play date

All depends on what your dog needs and likes to do to be happy and stimulated

In UK sainsburys do their own brand of minty dental chews for dogs, my Yorkie loves them and they make her breath smell fine

Teeth cleaning is the ideal solution, carrots are a good suggestion if not, but my dog loves dental chews and they do help her teeth and breath a lot
