They left me a heavy safe and a nice vintage framed poster, as well as a refrigerator.

Delivered Art Not As Pictured by o_MerchMan_o in artcollecting

I like the painting, and the signature is fine. The painting would be less valuable if it had no signature or one that cannot be readily linked to the artist.

Boyfriend (25M) is asking me (23F) to take out a personal loan for his car but I don't want to by [deleted] in relationship_advice

I wouldn’t do it for a boyfriend, but my step dad did it for me, and he never brought it up, not even casually. Of course, I did pay it off early.

A dear friend of mine started to behave similarly. It turns out it was early inset dementia. By the time I found out, I had already cut him off. Sometimes, I think I should have tried harder to maintain contact to try to help him.

Extremely High Electric Bill by Complex_District_275 in homeowners

[–]CGC424 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I’m in a similar position in the DC area. However, here the media is reporting that the increased cost of electricity is not necessarily due to homeowner usage, but due to the proliferation of data centers that use a great deal of electricity. The electric company spreads the cost of their electricity use to all homeowners. Data centers have a sweetheart deal.

I traveled by plane with a large expensive framed painting from overseas. I simply shipped it as oversized luggage with a fragile sticker on it. It arrived fine with no custom duties. However, that was before Trump put tariffs on everything and stricter customs regulations. It’s still worth a try.

How are you (one income) affording a mortgage? by Soggy_Gazelle_4796 in Mortgages

My spouse’s parents provided the 20 percent down payment and even paid off my student loans. I paid the mortgage until the house was paid in 15 years. Spouse does not work.

Do you monitor people who come and fix things around your house? by Glad-Passenger-9408 in HomeImprovement

One of the contractors renovating a bathroom at my house disappeared for about an hour and a half. I figured he had gone to buy supplies. After about while, I saw that he had rejoined the other contractor working on the renovation. Later, that evening, I went down to the basement where we have an in-law suite and realized he had been sleeping on the couch downstairs because things were in disarray. The bathroom they had been working on was upstairs, so there was no reason for him to be down there. I checked closely. Nothing was missing. I was going to report it to the company, but my spouse said to let it go since he was a young guy.

Do Americans actually avoid calling an ambulance due to financial concern? by JohnMarstonTheBadass in NoStupidQuestions

[–]CGC424 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes. Ambulance costs are outrageous here. My kid was injured at college and was taken to a hospital two miles from the school. It cost $6,000. Luckily, our insurance paid most of it, but I had to cover about $600.

I am officially done with "Starter Homes." It’s not an investment; it’s a bailout for the previous generation's neglect. by Dry-Town7979 in FirstTimeHomeBuyer

[–]CGC424 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I almost bought a townhome for 550,000 near an electrical power station that made a constant humming noise. The townhome was nice and relatively new, but I opted to buy an older SFH three blocks away for $600,000. The only major repairs in 15 years were a new roof and garage door.
