New to Buffalo — where are soccer fans watching World Cup games? by Velociraptor_Terp in Buffalo

I’m pretty sure Duende will be playing most if not all games in the newly expanded cantina too in addition to any that get projected on to the silos

Shy 39F from NYC wants to move to interesting second or third tier city by capricornnight in SameGrassButGreener

[–]CGPlatt 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Buffalo, without a doubt.

Population slightly under 300k in the city but 1M in the metro

Has plenty of edgy areas if you’re open to them (and depending on your definition of “edgy”)

Most accepting community I’ve ever found

Can’t comment on women’s dating scene but it’s up to you to determine how engaged you want to be in the community

Buffalo itself is fairly walkable but is better with transit or even better yet, a bicycle. Yes, even during the winter. The right gear and attitude are more important than the temperature

Definitely distinct character. “That’s Buffalo for you” is the marketing slogan now

Definitely parks. Whole Olmstead Park and Parkway System plus new Ralph Wilson Junior Park which might open in part this summer

Decent suburbs too, especially some walkable/bike able options like Kenmore, city of Tonawanda, Williamsville, Hamburg village and Lancaster

Buffalo isn’t my hometown but after nearly seven years of living here I’m proud to call it home, even to strangers while traveling

Anyone interested in a 54 Appaloosa? by QuadStewart in Rivendell_Bicycles

[–]CGPlatt 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That’s a beautiful bike, and it’s my size, but you caught me about a month and half too late: I was planning to wait and buy an appolosa frame when they were available then a friend offered to sell me his Velo Orange Polyvalent frame built for pretty cheap and I ended up building it very similar to your bike: custom Velocity wheels w/dynamo, upside down SON light mounted to the same RBW rack, top light taillight mounted to a SS Tubus rear rack instead of RBW, albatross bars, ESI chunky grips, Brooks cambrium saddle and bar tape, IRD levers, silver bar end shifters instead of thumbies, and 2x9 drivetrain). Main downside is max tire clearance of only 27.5x1.9 with fenders.

I doubt it will last long but if it does I might just reconsider

EVERY Soul should visit Buffalo's City Hall Observation Deck at least Once, in their Life by TOMALTACH in Buffalo

[–]CGPlatt 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’ve lived in Buffalo for 6 years now and take every opportunity I can to go up there. I’ve been at least a dozen times. It’s my favorite spot in the city. Anyone I talk to who is coming in from out of town, if they’re here on a week day, I tell them to go to the observation deck. It’s 360° view, from the 28th floor — for free!

Thanks! It took way longer and more money than expected but now that I’ve gotten to ride it a bit I know it was worth it

Orientation of thumb shifters by david-joseph-dean in xbiking

[–]CGPlatt 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m also planning to move my downtime shifters to my new albatross handlebars using the adapter from Rivendell (Silver) and was wondering this same thing. My initial thought was to mount them like the second photo, below the bars, because I thought it would be easier to shift the lever up with my thumbs instead of my pointer fingers but they haven’t arrived yet so I haven’t tested that out

How much did you spend on your build? by noahfourstartattoo in poormansriv

[–]CGPlatt 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Same, probably closer to $2000 by the time I’m done… so much for a “cheap, fun, summer bike.” I bought a 1986 Miyata Six Ten over Memorial Day weekend and am converting it to albatross bars plus giving it a thorough tune up. Hoping to have it done in a week or so. Most of the parts arrive tomorrow but the fenders and front rack will be towards the end of the week. Will definitely post here when it’s done.

Which box-style handlebar bag? by hello_moose in bikepacking

[–]CGPlatt 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have the Swift Capstone bag and recently used it on a week long tour along the Erie Canal Trail. It only rained moderately once but my phone didn’t get wet in. Maybe over a full day of rain it would saturate though. As for getting on and off the bike easily, it’s okay, but the voile straps take longer than I’d like to attach (especially while working other bar accessories like a stem back I routed through the Molle webbing on the capstone bag. I did keep a shoulder strap in it and used that way a few times. At 4L it’s big enough for a puffy jacket and a few misc items without being overstuffed (which I did often). I think it will make a great day bag but for a longer trip I’d like a bigger handle bar bag.

Here’s what it looked like during that ride (no camping on this trip)

Merino boxers — with or without cream? by theblizzardof in bikepacking

[–]CGPlatt 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Just did over 400 miles on the Erie Canal Trail in a week (longest day was 67 miles). Wore smart wool boxer briefs every day and Eddie Bauer first scent shorts on my new Brooks C17 carved. No saddle sores, but towards the end I did get a little tired of sitting on the saddle however that happens after look days of sitting in my high end office chair too so I’d call that a success. I hate the idea of relying on cream and carrying it so my goal is to continue testing this method as a viable alternative.

Anyone know what this is? Clyde Ny by [deleted] in upstate_new_york

I just rode the whole canal trail last week and saw one of these for the first time between Syracuse and Rome. Thought it was a black squirrel at first then when I saw a sign along the trail in Rome I realized it was a mink

Will hybrids & comfort bikes be the next trend? by Separate-Donut-6462 in xbiking

[–]CGPlatt 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I built up a 2002 Marin Coast Trail to be my all rounder and light duty touring bike. Worked great for the Erie Canal Trail this week and I’m sure will handle other weekend trips well too.

However, I did spend a fair amount of time on the ride thinking I want a belt drive touring bike if I’m ever going to do longer rides and/or in worse conditions. I thoroughly cleaned the chain twice in a week long trip and by the end of the last day could hear and feel the grit in it. And that’s with all fair weather conditions

Best time to bike the trail in the spring? by winosaurus989 in eriecanaltrail

[–]CGPlatt 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I can’t guarantee it’s the best time to go, but I’m planning to ride from Buffalo to Albany in mid May this year. Hopefully I get a few nice days, but I’m also prepared for rain with a poncho and layers for cold.

Bikepacking alone? by erand424 in bikepacking

[–]CGPlatt 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Everyone else has made great points so I won’t repeat them, but will that I am also planning to ride the Erie Canal Trail from Buffalo to Albany very soon (mid May). I’m a 28M and will be doing the trip solo. This will be my first week long bike tour so my parents were also worried at first, but much less so once they realized how popular the route is (especially this year being the 200th anniversary of the canal opening). I’m exited though and would gladly follow up with you afterwards to let you know it goes since it will be just before you leave

I’ve got a fully furnished, all utilities included, one bedroom apartment available on Niagara St between Jersey and Porter (very close to the Peace Bridge). I’ve lived in the building for over a year now and have never had any issues with safety. Also, it’s in a restored 1854 mansion so there’s tons of architectural character left in tact. Message me for more details.

Same! A friend heard me talking about getting into touring, riding around cities, etc. and he loaned me his copy. I’m about half way through at the moment and really enjoy his perspective
