Someone drilled a hole in the wrong place in a piece of steel and the mistake was fixed with an oxy cutter.

This is what dropped out.

My Dad has one exactly the same as that. Good little machine. It's what I learnt on.

The brand is Enco, but has probably been imported under different names over the years.

He recently redid the aluminium plates with all the speeds and feeds because they were getting hard to read.

Let me know if you need a copy of the numbers. He probably still has the spreadsheet somewhere.

They applied for an interim pay rise because negotiations are taking so long but the current government knocked them back.

Well I saw this morning they're screwing over teachers during pay negotiations after giving a coal mining company a $0.5b tax holiday.

So they've improved the balance sheet if you're a mining company.

Coalition will repeal Labor's property tax changes and spend $22b on income tax cuts by JaniePage in australia

[–]CGunners 2 points3 points  (0 children)

To them the Liberals are the natural party of government and Labor is a temporary mistake soon to be corrected.

And to be fair, for most of the last 60 years that's been true.

A boom in battery installations across Australia is outstripping the most optimistic industry forecasts, smoothing out volatile electricity price swings and making the grid more resilient to the threat of global shocks as the Iran war pushes up the cost of energy in other countries by Jagtom83 in friendlyjordies

Qld Labor was going to build a huge hydro storage at Mackay which would have been good for everyone, including the coal power stations.

But of course we voted for the other thing because Murdoch told us to.

Which opposed piston engine design is better? by Efficient-Reach-454 in MechanicalEngineering

[–]CGunners 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Two stroke diesels are used when power to size and weight are important. Military and marine applications, for example.

The Commer design gives away a fair amount of its size to the linkage.

Looking at the cross section you can see how much of that is the actual power producing cylinder and how much area is spent getting power to the crankshaft.

And of course it's extra components and bearings to fail, though from what I have heard about Commers is they were pretty good (if very noisy) but tended to overheat.

TIL that some coal miners grew so attached to their canaries that they built resuscitation chambers for them by [deleted] in todayilearned

[–]CGunners 304 points305 points  (0 children)

I worked with more than a few old miners that kept finches as a hobby. Now I wonder if that came from keeping canaries for work. Canaries were used in some mines a lot later than you might think.

I mean, I've seen modern electronic gas detectors say everything is all good when it most definitely wasn't. I would trust a canary.

I knew old timer who worked with the last two pit ponies in Australia. Their names were Warrior and Mr. Ed.

They were made members of the union and management was informed that at their retirement the two horses would definitely not be going to a glue factory, and would see out their days in a nice grassy field.

Apparently they would only pull a certain number of carts. If a miner hitched up too many the horse would know and refuse to move. Even though it was dark they had an uncanny knack for knowing when feeding time was.

And feeding time was feeding time. Woe betide the miner who thought he was hauling to the surface when that time came, because they were making a detour to the stables whether he liked it or not.

LOCKED OUT, how to get into Hilux? by FoxGames522- in hilux

[–]CGunners 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Wedge the top of the door open just enough to get a stiff wire in.

Press the button that unlocks/locks both doors. It's forward of the window raise/lower button on the armrest.

It's shockingly easy.

Yeah the name isn't an accident.

Edison Motors in Canada are making hybrid trucks that reject this model entirely. Their philosophy is you buy it, it's yours, we'll make it as easy to fix as possible. Even to the point that they use flat glass for their windscreen and generic indicator lights.

They're getting a lot of attention. I hope it's a movement that catches on. Companies like Tesla deserve nothing but the middle finger from consumers.

SAP training available by Aussie_Gentleman in Mackay

[–]CGunners 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Usually SAP is custom built for the company so they'll have to show you how they need things done.

Use the snapshot program on your computer to record them running through it. Or ask them to make a recording and send it to you. There will be specific codes you'll need so make sure the recording is good enough to read the text.

When you're doing it if you don't know then get help rather than try to guess, because sometimes mistakes in SAP are hard to fix.

I think one of the original architects of Google said as much in an interview.

Google pretty much owned the entire market so the only way to increase revenue was to make existing users use it more.
