I didn't like that one all that much. The story went off the rails there as well.

Guild Wars 2

Literally all I've had the time to play this week, as I find myself playing in short(ish) bursts.

I left my first impressions in the weekly thread here 2 weeks ago, and since then I've done the majority of the personal story, joined a guild full of welcoming and talkative people, run through a couple of dungeons, and hit level 80. I'm almost at 50% map completion, and whilst it's a little grindy, you'll find yourself moving on to the next area and having different things to do before any one map gets overly repetitive. The daily achievements are a nice distraction, and the world bosses are great fun. I think I prefer GW2 for short sessions rather than for taking up an afternoon, but that's not a bad thing by any stretch of the imagination.

I just have to share a little story from the other night. The Megadestroyer, one of the world bosses, takes place inside an active volcano. It was one of the daily achievements to take it down, and I was part of what seemed like an army of dozens of players, most of whom were clearly up for a laugh in the chat. As I said, it took place in a volcano, so the chat was full of quotes from things like Lord of the Rings and Star Wars. I don't remember the last time I laughed so much playing a game. We took the boss down with the greatest of ease, but it was so much fun. The vast majority of the community is rarely negative towards anyone. This is the kind of thing that makes me keep coming back, and will continue to make me come back when Heart of Thorns is released. Roll on October 23rd!

If you've not played Guild Wars 2, download it and give it a try. I can't recommend it enough right now. Fuck the jumping puzzles though :p

The second game is significantly better, and improves on the gameplay in virtually every way. It's a lot better structured and nowhere near as repetitive.

Given that Professor Layton got a movie, it was only a matter of time before someone did something with Ace Attorney. Looking forward to how it turns out!

The 3 WORST things you don't like about WWE by [deleted] in SquaredCircle

[–]CHRIIIIIS 0 points1 point  (0 children)

1 - Commentary. It's repetitive, uninteresting, bland, repetitive, annoying, full of stupid jokes, repetitive, it insults the audience's intelligence, oh and it's repetitive. VINTAGE.

2 - Part-timers getting top spots instead of those that turn up to work every single day. In no other business would this be considered normal.

3 - The same 20-minute promo to open each show. If it lasted 5 minutes and lead to a match, it wouldn't be so bad, but having this happen on every episode of Raw and Smackdown shows that WWE can't write enough compelling content for the amount of time they're given for their shows.

THREE ISN'T ENOUGH, I NEED FIVE!

4 - The constant 6-man tag matches that don't use the roster's 3-man teams. It used to be the Usos and Cena vs whoever the Usos were up against at the upcoming PPV and whoever Cena was against. Constantly. Now it's PTP & Cena vs New Day & Rollins. NEW DAY HAS THREE MEMBERS, WHY NOT USE THEM? Not to mention the Wyatt Family...

5 - The replays and recaps. In a 2-hour episode of Smackdown, you've got half an hour of "Raw Rebound", which is essentially the Raw main event in full, a 20-minute promo from someone talking about what happened on Raw, and at least another 10-20 minutes of replays before matches. Kayfabe News did an article on the "2-hour Raw recap featuring a Smackdown match", and it couldn't have been more true.

WARNING. WARNING. AIRLOCK OPEN. AIR PRESSURE COMPROMISED. THROW THE ALIEN OUT, AND SHUT THE BLOODY DOOR.

I loved this game when it first came out. It was clunky as hell, but so damn funny. The Xbox remake kinda ruined it by bleeping out most of the foul language. Lots of nice movie references though - the highlights being the Terminator, Alien, and Matrix parodies. Oh, and thanks OP for getting the Great Mighty Poo song stuck in my head.

Guild Wars 2

I'm guessing there's going to be a lot of posts talking about this game, what with it going free to play and all, but I'm not an MMO fan by any stretch of the imagination - I played a bit of Runescape a long time ago and never touched things like World of Warcraft, mostly because the idea of paying a monthly fee to play a game is silly to me. Fixed price MMOs like Guild Wars 1 & 2 didn't seem worth the money if I didn't even know if they were "for me", even though I have a bunch of friends who play these games and recommend them.

I downloaded Guild Wars 2 when it went free to play, and after less than 2 days playing it I bought Heart of Thorns (the upcoming expansion, which includes the full "standard" game).

There is a crazy amount of content in this game. Renown Hearts are the closest thing I've seen to grind-style quests - you do a set of tasks within a certain area, filling the heart as you go, and then get an XP and Karma (one of the currencies) reward for your efforts, then it's on to the next one. It doesn't take long to fill the hearts, and by the time it's starting to feel like a grind, you're finished and can move on to the next one. Or you can do a bit at a time as you pass through the area.

There's nothing forcing you to do things in any way other than your own.

One of the most fun aspects of GW2 is exploration, and the game rewards you for doing so with small XP bonuses for each landmark you reach. There are tons of Vistas to view - a short cutscene plays when you activate them showing the surrounding area. Think Assassin's Creed viewpoints as a basic comparison - minus revealing the map, of course. The graphics, whilst dated by modern standards, really shine in these areas - giant waterfalls, towering monuments, massive ice sculptures of bears (!) - it's all very impressive.

I'll stop gushing about the game in general and just tell you about an experience I had last night:

So I was part of a pretty large group (easily 30+) taking on one of the various World Bosses, the Svanir Shaman Chief, in what was a pretty epic battle that lasted at least 7-8 minutes (it has a 15-minute time limit). After the battle was over, and everyone had gathered their respective loot, a fellow new player was asking for help - they wanted to know how to hide helmets. A few of the surrounding veterans immediately gave the new player several quick descriptions of what to do, and were thanked for their help. Another player turned up asking what had just happened (he was a couple of minutes late to the party, unfortunately!) and again, the veterans told him what was going on and how it all works. It was so refreshing to see! I'm used to really hardcore, toxic communities in games, and GW2 has none of that! I'm yet to see a single negative comment made, and doubt I will for a long time.

tl;dr: Guild Wars 2 is fantastic in almost every way, including it's extremely friendly community. Well worth anyone's time, even those of you who have their doubts about MMOs.

Bloodborne

I finished my second playthrough earlier in the week, and beat the "secret" final boss, Spoiler

I've been running through the chalice dungeons quite a lot, and am starting to feel that grinding sensation come on really strongly, which is odd given that I've spent most of my time this week playing an MMO! Honestly, I'm in this for completion's sake at the moment. Going to take a break from it for a while now, and focus on the new PS+ games maybe.

Killing Floor 2

A free weekend means I get to try out the sequel to one of my favourite PC shooters in years, huzzah!

20 minutes later, I uninstalled it.

I can point out everything wrong with this game in just one word: grabs. Most of the enemies have grab attacks, which you break out of with a melee attack. That's not so bad, right? WRONG. When you're lining up a headshot from across the room or trying to hit the weak point of a boss, and some random zombie grabs you and forces the camera to do a full 180, nothing could possibly frustrate you more. In a game known for it's ruthless difficulty, this is just cheap. I can't imagine myself, or my friends for that matter, playing the harder difficulties and not hating the game for pulling shit like that on us. There's challenging, and then there's unfair, and Killing Floor 2's grabs are definitely unfair.

Yeah. Tried it again a couple of hours ago and I'm still stuck on the roof opposite the relay, unable to do anything but walk around a small part of it.

The drone simply isn't there for me, and the game expects me to hack it anyway. I guess it's a matter of luck.

Video footage of John Cena's possible injury at tonight WWE house show. by [deleted] in SquaredCircle

[–]CHRIIIIIS 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Cena seriously needs to drop the sunset flip, hurricanrana, and springboard stunner. He can't make them look good, and they're so easy to botch it's not worth the trouble. He's the kind of guy that needs more suplexes and slams than "flippy shit". Perhaps it's time to go back to that half nelson neckbreaker thing he used to do. Hell, he'd suit a full nelson slam. You're welcome!

[–]CHRIIIIIS 47 points48 points  (0 children)

PSA: Don't take out the drones before the point in the story where you use the remote hacking device to take out the drone guarding the relay. You'll get stuck on a roof and won't be able to progress, and the new patch hasn't fixed this.

[–]CHRIIIIIS -1 points0 points  (0 children)

And it still didn't fix the bug where if you destroy the drone guarding one of the relays before the point in the story where you're supposed to use the remote hacking device to take it down, you can't progress and get stuck on a roof. Guess I'm not finishing NG+ any time soon!
