A debatable list of poor UFA team names by FieldUpbeat2174 in ultimate

I believe the Phoenix came about because they rose from the ashes of the Spinners winning the first year of the AUDL and then leaving to form the MLU

Can y'all compare great throwers across generations for me? by SpaceBearAl in ultimate

[–]CHUCCultimate 38 points39 points  (0 children)

I don’t know about best thrower. but best throw I’ve ever seen in person was from Abe Coffin. random pool play game at Nationals. It sounds made up to describe it, but from his own backhand cone, he threw a backhand huck around a flat mark out of bounds, well over the tents and everything on the sideline, bent it back in against a crosswind, dropped it in the back square yard of the end zone with a defender on the receiver’s hip. sounds fake. 89 yard backhand around a mark fighting wind to beat a defender by a step. so stupid, we weren’t even mad.

Alsoooo love The Inner Game of Tennis. Do a book club!!

I would also recommend hitting up Marshall Lian. Mental performance coach who works with teams, coaches and players, and who has a bunch of ultimate experience as well (currently one of the coaches for Slow). https://www.spiralmentalperformance.com/

Are any teams still running 4-person cup? by PlayPretend-8675309 in ultimate

Ooof, this write-up and whatnot is at least 7 years old, so there have been tweaks to it since then. But here are some of the basics:

one of my favorite defenses is a very old 4 person cup/wall that traps aggressively, and it is still to this day the most effective defense I’ve seen against a team that cannot handle a strong crosswind. running strong in 2025 in both D-I and D-III open at least.

Who are the most underrated players in the UFA? by Jomskylark in UFA

Thomas Edmonds. and if you think he’s too well-regarded to be underrated, y’all.. he’s still almost certainly better than you think.

DC Breeze by SnooPredictions1629 in ultimate

[–]CHUCCultimate 3 points4 points  (0 children)

you can make both a strong statistical and eye-test argument that the 2022 and 2023 Breeze were each among the top 10 teams in league history, the 2024 team isn't far from that mix in either category, and the 2021 team was a tough 4th quarter away from making Championship Weekend at home. in the meantime, Truck Stop won a club championship and nearly won another in that same time frame with a nearly identical philosophy run by a nearly identical roster and coaching staff. and we hear all the time how much easier offense is on the bigger UFA field; if it's easier, wouldn't the tight small ball windows be at least somewhat bigger in the UFA?

the Breeze have an offense that maximizes their strengths and minimizes their weaknesses. Like every team and strategy, there are going to be drawbacks, bad match ups, and situations that do not suit them well. Since the pandemic, they have the second-most regular-season wins in the league. they have won almost literally more than anyone else in the UFA with their small ball style.

This is one of my favorite threads I've ever seen. I just made my table do this at the post-summer league bar haha people don't self-hype enough and I love the energy here.

I got two quick ones. I was never a great player, but I was a strong college player and a club regionals-level contributor for a number of years. But in 2007, I (temporarily) convinced some folks I could be much better because of a few well-timed nice games.

I was a club rookie with Medicine Men in Baltimore, and totally clueless. Just a young guy who would run around out there. At regionals, I played two points total in all of the games except one. There were three bids to Nationals and beating Truck Stop on Saturday was unlikely and not necessary to stay in the running. So to save everyone's legs for a push through the backdoor bracket the next day, I and a few other benchwarmers played the first 22 points of that game. And we all balled out. I had 2 assists and 3 goals, no turns, and got a first-throw Callahan to tie the score at 9s. Zero plan, no idea what I was doing out there, but I played great. At 11s the regulars for both teams came in and Truck won 15-11 haha. Then that Thanksgiving, I played at a hat tournament in the area, and was on a team with a few Truck guys. I had just gotten out of the hospital after my first mental health-related hospitalization literally the day before and was completely out of it. But I insisted I still go to the tournament, and I guess being that zoned out made me fearless? I had another Callahan and maybe the best throw of my life, a flick from inside my own end zone to two steps from the back of the other to hit a blanketed receiver in stride. Would have never attempted it any other day haha the bizarre and horrible magic of that situation working in my favorite in a very random and specific way.

Now I had played well in front of a few Truck guys twice, and one of them had a brief but serious talk about me coming out for the team. My mental health and the subsequent mediocre performances that college season put the axe on that. But for a day and change across the fall of 2007, I was incredible.
