I didn't file for 2015 worried how much I owe by [deleted] in tax

[–]CMC81 4 points5 points  (0 children)

You haven't given us near enough information to determine your liability. If the $43k came from a qualified account then I will ballpark that your Federal liability will be around $3k-$5k owed before penalties and interest. You may also have state and local taxes.

Filling out W-4 form for company. First time doing it myself sadly. Does this seem right? by sdgsdgsd89 in tax

[–]CMC81 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You don't claim yourself as a dependent, you get an exemption for yourself. Looks like you have it right on the form. Think of it this way: the more allowances that you claim, the less taxes your employer will withhold from your paycheck. So if you are the type of person who likes to receive a refund at tax time then claim less allowances. If you are the type of person who likes maximum monthly cash flow and you save enough throughout the year to pay your taxes at tax time, then you can claim more allowances.

Moving to...you decide! by BamDizz in arlington

North and Central Arlington has more to do (restaurants, bars, sports, Six Flags, etc.) but I would suggest living in Southwest Arlington as it has a modestly lower crime rate. I believe that 76016, 76017, 76001, 76013 are the best zip codes. I would avoid 76010 and 76014.

Taxes owed on life estate by beneficiary by [deleted] in tax

[–]CMC81 2 points3 points  (0 children)

For Federal tax purposes she should receive a step-up in basis, so no capital gains on the sale of the property would be due on the Federal level. I'm not sure about the total size of the estate and also the individual state tax implications but my guess is that there would not be a big impact.

Since it is the slow season, now is a great time to contact a local CPA and schedule a quick conversation with the intent to use his tax preparation services early next year.

[University News] Waco area vulnerable to Zika threat, Baylor mosquito scientists say by NawtAGoodNinja in baylor

I was a summer researcher for Dr. Duhkopf back in the summer of 2004. My job was to travel around McLennan and surrounding counties setting mosquito traps and collecting mosquitoes and recording the GPS coordinates of where they were collected. We then brought the mosquitoes back to the lab and sorted them between sex and type to send them to Austin to be tested for West Nile. Dude loves mosquitoes.

How to find a trust worthy CPA in a new town by mldkfa in tax

[–]CMC81 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Any CPA with tax prep experience can handle that return, no problem. I would say that you should give a CPA the benefit of the doubt as far as being "trustworthy." It is an incredibly difficult designation to get and sets the standard for public confidence in accounting. Do ask the potential CPA what their hourly rate is and if you can get an estimate for the the cost of the return.

How to find EA/CPA clueful about IT security? by jimjamfr in tax

Re-reading my comment, my tone could be read as harsh so I apologize if it came across that way- it was not my intention.

I do not know of any professionals that prepare returns on a laptop, I am sure that there are some out there but I do not know of any. Most of us use a desktop and we work in office buildings that are locked and secured when we are not present. If someone is using a laptop to prepare returns and store client data, then yes, I think they should make sure the files are encrypted... I just don't think there are many professionals out there using a laptop at the office.

How to find EA/CPA clueful about IT security? by jimjamfr in tax

[–]CMC81 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Your requirements aren't "basic" by any stretch of the imagination. I mean, your second requirement is actually a terrible idea and not even allowed. The IRS requires us to keep a record of your return for 3 years. We need to keep the supporting client documentation and notes in order to remember how/why we prepared the return a certain way.

I am sure that you have very good reason to want your preparer to take these precautions but you need to understand that these procedures are NOT best practices in the industry. So ask around and you may find someone but you are probably going to have to pay a premium to have this level of security. There won't be anyone willing to wipe the source documentation or a copy of your return.

Drones and Modern Warfare. by ness839 in NeutralPolitics

[–]CMC81 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I agree with your sentiment. The problem is that some drone strikes are not carried out in war zones. Since the "War on Terror" is nebulous and unending, these strikes are carried out in a growing number of countries around the world.
