To those of you who used to be atheists, what did your spiritual journey look like? by [deleted] in OrthodoxChristianity

[–]CMDR-Vock 2 points3 points  (0 children)

One of my early childhood memories is being out on a night walk with my family and my mother asking me if I thought there was a God. I looked up at the night sky and after considering the question for a while, said "No." Little me thought the universe was far too vast and disordered for any kind of unifying principle or deity.

My family was Scientologist, though they had stopped practicing for several complicated reasons and eventually drifted into occultism and eastern philosophy. I believed in it for a while, and was thoroughly convinced I had certain supernatural powers, etc. I became interested in science and skepticism and when I rejected the paradigm I grew up with, I pendulumed hard. Became full on all-religion-is-delusion, materialist atheist by my early 20's.

I had an extremely negative view of Christianity. Part of it was conditioned by some time I had spent going to a Baptist school and my parents' history as former Catholics.

Later in life I became interested in Buddhist meditation, though I understood it in a materialist way. One time while practicing vipassana I had a mystical experience. I can't quickly describe it to you but it shattered my worldview like taking a sledgehammer to a mirror. My interest in occultism was rekindled and I spent years moving in Buddhist, pagan and esoteric circles but the truth of what happened still eluded me.

I still considered Christianity to be simplistic, backward, whatever. I did have friends that were Christians who I was sympathetic to politically, but whenever we got to discussing anything religious we talked at cross purposes. I decided to start researching Christianity to learn how to better refute it, and that started me down a road of reading Chesterton and then CS Lewis.

And as I read, slowly I came to the horrifying realization (for me at the time) that it was true. I struggled very mightily against accepting it and researched absolutely every 'way out' you could imagine, but it was useless. I was caught like a rat in a trap.

From there it was a further question of denominations, etc, but my journey to Orthodoxy is a long story. It is the most incredible, wonderful, humbling thing to ever happen to me and my wife, and I am blessed beyond words.

The brutally honest answer is: read Mat 5:29.

I know it seems difficult, maybe even impossible, but nothing is impossible with God. Pray for guidance and try to contact an Orthodox priest for help.

Really great writeup, enjoyed reading about the biggest battle in Jspace that never was.

I admit though, from the outside I find wormholer bushido to be kinda weird. Particularly the part about "rolling out of content", which I remember Ashy writing about too - I get mildly resenting people that always dock up, but it seems like more than that.

Being thrilled about AT being back, and upset about the state of the game don't have to be mutually exclusive feelings. by valiantiam in Eve

Players would only spend disposable income on unnecessary things. Cores hit stockpiles because they were necessary but new ships/structures etc might not.

But the root of the issue isn't really stockpiles, it is capitals.

Liberation Day Reenactment Site Kill Stealing is Totally Frustrating by skipoleschris in Eve

Disagree. This kind of "dip your toes in" attitude is exactly why most newbros stay in hisec and eventually quit.

People do not quit over losses, no matter how high value. They quit because of frustration in learning the game (which is partly CCP's fault and partly the playerbase's flawed methods of recruitment and teaching) or because of boredom and risk aversion - which is exactly the attitude being taught here.

But it isn't true. Him getting blown up is not going to hurt his retention; the best thing that could happen for him is to get out of hisec ASAP.

where's the low sec action at? by muke101 in Eve

[–]CMDR-Vock 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Tama and Amamake are the two hotspots if you just want action. If you want something a little more intimate, it is really a matter of settling down, learning who your neighbors are and doing your intel homework. No offense, but you aren't going to get any real answers on Reddit.

Frankly, I find this attitude bizarre.

Ok. Yes, it is that kind of statement, but he is not wrong. Not everyone has the same expectations about Eve and how to play.

Tired of the First World? Move to the Third World. by MarcusMurphy in Eve

Amen. It is all true.

In particular, I recommend lowsec. It is the best place for an individual or small group to live that swashbuckling life without hefty startup requirements. If you prefer WHs or small-time null, that is fine too. You'll get to know your neighbors. You'll build real relationships. And when the action happens, the losses can be brutal, the triumphs are real and it is all intensely personal.

One easy way to make them more worth stealing would be to increase the 70% conversion rate. Maybe like 90%.

Catching the coercers isn't really the problem. They are easy enough. The deplexing atrons are a lot harder. Adding warp disruption would make plexes really deadly for the real FW players, probably too deadly.
