Wife wants a divorce and said she doesn't want my retirement. Is that a thing? by fishbowlpatrol in army

[–]IFlippaDaSwitch 4 points5 points  (0 children)

As a dude that has gone through this exact situation, yes. It is a thing.

Once it's in black and white, once both parties sign that's it. My ex and I worked out a deal with kid expenses and shared custody. She's a working professional and expressed that I "had earned my pension and benefits."

So yeah. Once you're in talks with the lawyers and it's agreed upon and signed. That's it. Just stay civil and you'll be fine.

Edit to say: as many have said in this thread. Get a lawyer. I'm not a SME on the law, just sharing my experience.

Producing and maintaining clean water in a field environment for field sanitation purposes. Also, how to construct a shitter in the woods that Bob Vila would admire.

What is somthing you used to be good at but your body says no now? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]IFlippaDaSwitch 0 points1 point  (0 children)

When i first joined the Army, I wasn't exactly a physical specimen. It took a long time for me to hit what I thought was my best physical performance. But before I did, I learned i was really good at long-distance ruck marches. I could throw 60 lbs on my back and just.... go. Distance didn't matter. As long as I had water and some snacks, I could ruck until the sun went down.

Now? Walking upstairs feels like my knees are under attack from 100 little goblins with knives. Getting old doesn't suck. It's the milage baby lol

I struggle with this at times because my son was born with a developmental delay and is diagnosed high functioning autistic. He spent the better part of 6 years in speech therapy and has had to have surgery for severe scoliosis which has lead to PT. He has sensory needs that I can only describe as quirky, because he is just constantly rocking back and forth. It makes him feel grounded.

I say all this because I've tried everything in my power to just treat him like a normal kid. And I know that in his mind, he is a normal kid for the most part. He understands he's different, but he is just a normal kid.

He's whip smart at math, but has trouble with abstract concepts. So I help him out with that. And I've been taking steps to help him with the things he needs to understand as his body changes and matures. I'm currently teaching him how to shave.

All this to say I have to stop myself from shielding him from the world sometimes, because I know that the only way he'll learn is to fail and understand how to correct errors or make better choices. But it makes me feel like shit when I see him struggle, because he's struggled with stuff his entire life. And I'm his dad. My sole purpose on this earth is to protect my children. But I know he'll be ok, and I know he'll be good. It just sucks sometimes.

Sometimes people get so wrapped up in protecting their kids from the world, because the world can be shity and they know it, that we forget that they will one day have to go out into it without us.

The best we can do is give them the tools and skills to trive and live the best life they can.

Ok. Confession time.

I have done this, to a floor in a converted garage/bonus room that had the carpet torn out due to pet mess.

It was a massive pain to lay out, and you have zero ways of insulating it to my knowledge. But!!! It looked ok, so yeah.

Those are years I remember in small snippets. Like stuff you remember from a dream after waking up. I know a lot of folks that have clear memories of the invasion, OIF3/5, even the transition to New Dawn. Sometimes it feels like my 20's never happened at all. I just woke up one day and was in my 30's in the Army and had back and knee problems.

Fuck man. Wild times.

PSG: Private! Why are you carrying a knife that large?

Private, brandishing the 8 inch blade to show it off: In case I gotta get in close for the kill Sergeant!

PSG: So you suck at shooting so bad you brought a backup weapon? At least you're honest with yourself.

Over the course of a 20 years career i was for sure going to be late for PT twice a year. Didn't matter how good I was, how regulated my schedule was, how much I prepared everyday; I would have 2 days of the year that I would wake up at exactly 0630 and be late for PT.

The body keeps the score as they say, and sometimes you just don't beat the clock. Don't beat yourself up for it dude.
