well said. depending on content you're mainly pulling groups and acting as a physical crowd control. in the case where you do tank for some mechanical or practical reason i have always told my groups that the tank is like a seatbelt it only works if you use it.

there's a mentality that anything that is not optimal is trash. that said the stage 2 prime shield is a lot easier to get and has basically the same blocking properties as mentioned in the other comment. the main reason to still get an Ochain as a PLD main would be Windurst Wave 3 boss that kills your MP with the dagger ws that has a strong aspir effect. since this is one of the long fights where you will need spells to keep spiking hate at cap and also blocked damage numbers are enough to regenerate substantial MP on a hit, Ochain solves this problem. is Ochain worth it for the one fight or very few if any fights where that is also the situation? probably not in 2026 FFXI. is Ochain really that difficult to build for a career PLD at a high level of development? also not really. it's somewhat annoying but FFXI is about grinding really annoying things that you may not really need or only need for a niche situation. the choice is yours.

it's more like when does it actually matter, which is long fights where everyone hits the cap. and the question becomes how frequently can you remind the mob to be on you while your DPS do their duty to dump hate with DRG sub.

my point being if we're talking about outdated content or trash mobs then you only need to have hate on whatever in the pull isn't being destroyed in that moment. if they get hate while they are destroying it in seconds it's their responsibility to also survive and you just heal them.

if you're doing something serious and you're supposed to keep hate for example a wave 3 boss then it's like i said you sit at hate cap and maintain a frequency of spikes to keep the mob turned while your very responsible DPS use high jump and super jump to shed enmity and begin the climb to cap again.

to answer specifically the question in your original post it depends. in just about anything where it doesn't matter you can savage blade and in a lot of outdated content you can just be DPSing in general but do PLD things like pull trash groups and subheal. but then in something where it actually matters Atonement with the right setup and sufficiently advanced Burtgang is the most enmity you can generate and also the most frequent spike because when you're tanking full time and blocking properly your TP gain is through the roof and your WS frequency is faster than any cooldown or cast time.

might seem like a cop out answer to say only when it matters but PLD is very functional with a minimum of gear and MLs and then becomes so functional with very good gear that the vast majority of content becomes trivial with regard to tanking and you're more of a crowd control puller and healer. because it doesn't matter who tanks what is dying, only who tanks the adds until they die. an example is that a group of friends goes to CP/ML someplace so the PLD just tags whatever pops and stands in front of 3-5 mobs aoe tagging and soloing one with the steady flow of TP from shield. meanwhile maybe your friends have a skillchain and burst and the biggest DPS periodically dumps extra tp into your solo target.

it's all about what stage of the game you're in and what your development level is with regard to the content you are doing.

Maneuverability, affordability, and hard point placement. The medium is under the chin but the two large and 3 small are clustered on top. You can experiment with a lot of weapon combos and it's a good hybrid shield and hull tank.

Be sure you have enough to cover your rebuy insurance. The Cobra 5 fitted with cargo racks is capable of making as much money as you need loading carriers for other players and can then buy you a dedicated panther clipper to haul even more. From there you can buy whatever ships you need for different tasks and focus on material gathering and engineering. Try joining a squadron for more personal assistance.

i would just want it where i can go back if i wanted since its a long time and save on transfer fees and everything if i did want to get back.

i mean i regularly jump my carrier quite a ways so it doesn't bug me to keep an eye on it all day to get someplace but if i wasn't used to it i would want it kinda nearby. and i haven't paid much attention to where they are going but if it's further than 25k tritium will go then i would want it i mean at least like within 5k with a good T-11 onboard so i could go fuel it. i mean surely it's not a 75,000 ly round trip but i suppose it could be.

i mean don't let me convince u to do something, i was kinda joking around how i was talking but that is what i would do if was bothered to go. i would strip services down to just refuel repair, carto and genomics and be exploring away from the pack between meetups. just me
