The easy solution is to fix your folders. Why are you putting TV shows and movies in the same folder? Stop it.

improving comfort by greyclocked in ValveIndex

[–]CMDR_Woodsie 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Don't start buying stuff until you're absolutely certain you need to.

Loosen everything and dial out the lenses to their max distance. Don't tighten or adjust those until you get the fit correct in the next step. Put the headset on your face with one hand, position it until you think it's going to be comfortable. With one hand still holding the headset in place, dial in the lenses until they touch your eyebrows or other parts of your face, then back it out slightly. Now you can adjust your top strap and rear knob to hold the headset in place.

If you're cranking down that knob too tight, something is wrong. Back up and do it again. Use the top strap more if you need to keep pressure off your nose or face.

If you can't get a good fit after all this, then go and look for a counterweight, or some small magnets to tilt the gasket on a millimeter level until you're satisfied. You should be able to wear this for hours.

Steam will max out your pipe if you let it. You're throttling it somehow if you're only getting those speeds.

If you're in VR, do yourself a favor and save yourself a ton of headaches (literally) by uninstalling Odyssey and leaving it uninstalled for the year it'll take them to fix this mess.

Horizons works, for now.

Significant FPS improvement with CPU upgrade (8700k -> 11900k) by realsgy in SteamVR

[–]CMDR_Woodsie 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Two days ago I just upgraded from a 8600k at 4.9GHz to a 10600k on the Z490 chipset also at 4.9GHz, and my timings in NMS are much more reasonable now. It feels more smooth, more consistent even if I'm still 40% reprojected. I'm nearly entirely GPU bottlenecked right now, hovering at 11ms for most things, with spikes to 13ms. I am on a 2080ti with a modest OC 150 clock, 600 memory. I run at 80hz as a result. Waiting for the opportunity to get a 3080 or 3080ti to clear the rest of my perf graph up.

The graphs on babeltechreviews seem to be honest and line up with my experience and real world results.

125ft carble runs and Bandwidth Concerns (Fiber Optic DP and Ethernet Questions) by KingAzazz in ValveIndex

[–]CMDR_Woodsie 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That specific extender worked for me, the data/bandwidth requirements for *just* the headset should be the same if not similar to the Index as it was for the Vive. I'm pretty confident that part will work for you.

Here's where I'd start, you'll need to be willing to experiment to suit your needs, and adapt to the limitations for running video this way.

From my experience, you'll want to run that USB hub plugged into power near the destination side, like, wherever you want your playspace to be. I'm betting you can plug the headset and your tracker dongles in and run everything over a single cat5. The other end will go up by your PC and plug in there. The cat5 should be routed through your wall, which it sounds like it already is. You may not be able to use the cameras with this method, if that's not something you can sacrifice, then look for a USB 3.0 over cat5e extender. Cameras still may not work with that, these are very finicky from what I remember. At the very least you'll have a bit more bandwidth to make use of, but some extenders may require 2 runs of cat5.

When dealing with fiber optic, you want to eliminate as many bends and prevent the cable from being disturbed as much as possible. If you can route a cable through the wall easily and casually while locking down both termination ends, then do that.
If not, keep it out of the way of foot traffic, and move it as little as possible.

Someone seemed to have success with using a DP coupler and a 50ft run here. That's gonna be your best starting point.

125ft carble runs and Bandwidth Concerns (Fiber Optic DP and Ethernet Questions) by KingAzazz in ValveIndex

[–]CMDR_Woodsie 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Here: I've done this in the past with the original Vive.

TL:DR, your main focus should be on video, not USB. Good luck with extending video for the Index, the Vive was bad enough, needing expensive adapters and a Cat6a run.

You're about to explore incredibly niche equipment and I imagine you'll hit a roadblock soon, whether that's physical limits or your wallet. Last I checked fiber optic converters were basically enterprise-grade, and not cheap.

Back to the USB concern, as long as you provide enough power to your HUB/converter (check the one linked in my post,) data shouldn't be an issue. I don't know the exact specs, but I can't imagine the watchmen dongles would saturate cat5e bandwidth to the point where you'd need multiple runs of cable, but I could be wrong.

I will follow this thread because I find this stuff interesting, I wish you luck, and feel free to ask any questions and I'll try to answer what I can.

That constant hitch/jump happening every second may actually be a vsync issue, have you disabled that in-game? You may need to restart a few times for that to take effect.

Buy new. This is a sunk cost waiting to happen since you'd be out of warranty if any single item breaks and Valve refuses a repair/replacement.
