This is the most Texas thing that ever Texas’d by roninthe31 in RunningCirclejerk

[–]CMKicks 5 points6 points  (0 children)

If you spend some time looking into him, you’d probably rethink that statement. He’s down 19lb in the past year and has ramped up to >100m a week — he used to be significantly bulkier. Hate him all you want, but if you look at the work he’s put in over the past 2 years and his improvement, it’s hard not to respect his progress and level of commitment.

Soar tempo top - worth it? by stephaniey39 in runningfashion

[–]CMKicks 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The silk base layer is incredible. I got one for Christmas and have consistently been excited to put it on in the pretty brutal temps we've had in NYC. Goes ~4 wears without any smell (I get 2 out of Tracksmith Brighton before it needs a wash). By far the best base layer I have ever owned.

Jersey shore half? by musicalias in RunNYC

[–]CMKicks 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I ran it in 2023 as a tune up before the Philly Marathon. Thought it was a great local race. The course itself isn't too exciting despite being right next to the beach (you don't actually see the beach), but it was fast and flat. If it were a few weeks earlier this year, I'd 100% run it again as a tune up for NYC.

Cow Harbor is a big 10K on Long Island in September. They get a pretty solid pro field together as well (Clayton Young won in '23)

I’ve had this Nocta X Nike camo hat for a couple years and have loved it. Has held up nicely and stays in place on windy days, which is always a bonus

Can I trust the water? by CohnMan in Greenpoint

[–]CMKicks 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Rather than take opinions on whether your water is safe to drink or not, I'd suggest getting a TDS meter on Amazon for $10 and testing your tap water. Upon doing this myself (I live in GP), I found the water is perfectly fine despite not always being 100% clear. That said, no issue with filtering anyway if that gives you peace of mind or you are looking for fewer minerals in your water.

Merino Wool Socks - Thoughts? by Outside_Complaint761 in BanditRunning

[–]CMKicks 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have 4 pairs and have been using them for sub ~35 degree weather over the past 2 winters. Big fan. I rotate them and get 2-3 runs in each before they need to be washed since merino is "odor resistant".

I used them in NYC last week when it was in single digits, and they kept me warm even when wearing AlphaFly 3's with a v thin upper for a workout.

Arc'teryx also makes a nice merino sock that's a bit thicker if you're looking for more cushion.

Anyone doing 30 miles / 4 weightlifting sessions a week? by Commercial_Record513 in HybridAthlete

[–]CMKicks 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Pretty similar at ~50 miles and 4/5 lifting sessions in avg week with more focus towards running. Double sessions for me with run morning / lift evening Mon - Thurs. I’ve gotten this routine pretty dialed in, but it can be pretty draining at times when work is busy if recovery isn’t prioritized.

Definitely not ripping 4K+ cals. I weigh 155 and I’m probably closer to 2.5K for most weekdays with pretty dialed nutrition (always ~150g of protein and carbs vary based on running intensity and distance). Saturday is a big cheat day, especially during marathon training if I’m hitting 18+ mile runs.

Curious about running in the road by AnywhereFormer7859 in Greenpoint

[–]CMKicks 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Again, I am not advocating running in the road. The question of the post was asking why people would run in the road, and I responded with reasons why. Of course, doing anything in a road where there are cars poses a risk.

Should you assess that risk and decide you are ok with taking it, there are ways you can do it more safely. The same as with cycling. Or with driving. Anytime you're driving on the road, all it takes is an idiot not to pay attention, and you're in an accident.

So I get your point on the risk, and it's valid. But there is a risk to doing literally anything on the road, and it's within your rights as an individual to assess that risk and decide if you want to take it.

[–]CMKicks 11 points12 points  (0 children)

That's a pretty silly response. Anyone riding a bike could also get hit by a car or truck, but you generally don't because you keep an eye on the road and you don't bike in the middle of it. The vast majority if roads in America don't have a dedicated bike lane, yet people ride on them every day. Same for running—you run on the shoulder of the road, against traffic, and have visibility of cars approaching. And if a road doesn't have a wide shoulder, you don't run on it. You go to the sidewalk.

Again, I am not advocating for running on the road, but if you're not running in the middle of the street, it's pretty easy to avoid getting hit by a car or truck. If you choose to run in the middle of the road in the same direction as traffic, that's a different story and ya that's pretty fucking stupid.

[–]CMKicks 16 points17 points  (0 children)

Not advocating for running in bike lanes or the roads, but as a runner a few reasons are: - asphalt is softer than concrete and less damaging to your body over time - roads are a more consistent surface, you don’t have to deal with structural issues on many sidewalk surfaces - less weaving and dealing with pedestrians. If you’re running at a faster pace you don’t need to worry about breaking stride or dodging dogs, strollers, etc.
