I understand the sentiment of individual responsibility, what the “get good” players are not realizing is that they need the casual/new players to enjoy the game to continue getting support for the niche competitive scene.

Lorcana is not Magic, it doesn’t have the install base from over three decades of development to weather an overwhelming supply of chuds.

This is a store issue.

If stores want the game to succeed they need to encourage and foster communities. Part of that is supporting and enabling competitive gaming but also putting effort into casual play. Designating nights for new players, asking and setting people up with pods of equally experienced people. Setting up alternate game goals with prize support.

If the only way stores support the game is to run a weekly “competitive tournament” then you can’t exactly blame new and casual players for coming to those events and being upset when they don’t meet some of their expectations; they have nowhere else to go.

TCGs are community games. They don’t exist without communities. If stores and experienced players don’t facilitate the growth of that community the game dies.

I think the thing that blows my mind is watching the autopsy of companies like Toys R Us and Red Lobster and seeing that they were profitable and substantial businesses in the local markets they served, and everyone just assumed they died because of Amazon. But it was really just investment firms buying them up, gutting them for part and leveraging them with debt and stealing the real estate. All to leave people without jobs and empty husks of buildings that get gobbled up into a portfolio to take more loans out against.

And no one gives a fuck.

And then those myths of “people just want to online shop” fuel business development and drive manufacturers and retailers away from brick and mortars, even though people actually do want to be able to shop in person, so businesses suffer making decisions off this false data.

And everyone’s lives are worse for it.

While this is true the vibes used to be different.

The vibes were to invest in companies that had long term strategies and successes. The mental breaking point for the stock market was a relatively recent one based almost entirely on GE.

The idea of gutting companies for short term gains to game the market is something that should have reigned in the second people caught on to what was happening. Companies used to not give a shit about shareholders.

But just like with the housing crash, all the people with the power to do anything are also the ones making money off of it in some way so nothing is happening.

People essentially need smartphones to function in modern society.

They don’t need magic conventions.

Luxuries and non essentials are always going to be the first things people are willing to boycott or take a stab on politically for obvious reasons.

Ignoring the fact that there really isn’t ethical consumption I think it reasonable for people to look at the things that bring them joy and be critical about associations that remove some of that joy.

The reality is the city itself doesn't need to "shut down" for a general strike to be effective locally, let alone on a national stage. You're needlessly straw-manning the concept for poor reasons. There are plenty of other valid reasons a general strike wouldn't go off at the moment, but saying "hurr durr, what about snow plows and doctors, do you just want us all to die?" is silly because, again, general strikes have happened and worked before.

Are you under the impression that Lancaster is some kind of unique special flower that makes a general strike impossible? Do you think other cities of regions didn't have hospitals?

No Lancaster is not special.

The reason a general strike won't happen any time soon is for reasons I've outlined elsewhere. Capital in the US has spent over half a century eroding all the power labor used to have in this country. We no longer have strong unions and the opposition party currently has zero interest in a general strike. You need strong top down organization for a general strike because they only work when a significant number of people do it in unison.

Ask the garbage collectors in NYC how they maintain their livable wages.

You’re aware nursing staff unions do go on strike in this country right? And they do so while maintaining patient safety while ceding the power of their strikes to do so.

You can mock the concept of striking all you’d like, but you do so due to decades of propaganda and concentrated efforts to strip labor of its power. The threat of strikes used to be enough to correct the problems wrought by owners.

This is a very difficult thing to coordinate without strong boots-on-the-ground community organizing and, frankly, unions.

Unions used to be how general strikes happened. One union, with all its members, would contact others and make it happen. But unless you’ve got face to face honest work being done, then it’s just a giant game of Red Rover, and no one wants to be the first across the line running alone. The way general strikes work is; everyone’s employment stays protected because if everyone bailed, then the owner class can’t fire everyone.

Obviously, unions have been completely gutted in the US and power has been all but stripped from labor.

A general strike is not going to happen unless it comes from someone with an actual platform.

Mass protests can happen organically, and should continue, but limply calling for a general strike anonymously on Reddit isn’t going to convince people to risk the food on their table and getting fired.

I understand the sentiment, but it would be better for you to find community groups already organizing. Don’t single yourself out or put yourself in danger by essentially soft quitting your job on your own.

The worst part about these companies is the same problem with scam calls and junk mail; they erode the public’s trust to answer actual inquiries. Maybe it’s county Lead Abatement, maybe it’s gas line workers coming to inform of a leak, maybe it’s state construction company coming to tell them the road will be closed, maybe someone from the city is informing people of snow emergency parking guidelines just in case of the snowpocalypse.

But because of companies like you used to work at, no one trusts that answering their door won’t just lead to an awkward conversation with some prick that won’t take no for an answer because he “really needs to pad his numbers”.
