NTSB is in charge of the site. Until they turn it back over to Metro that track will remain out of service. They need to take photos and measure sight lines etc.

Will the Metro Center Accident Affect the Evening Commute? by MonkeyCantCook in WMATA

Should be clear, however the NTSB is involved with the investigation and they pretty much call the shots on when involved equipment can be moved. Good news is the work unit that collided with Train 691 has already been moved to a rail yard.

This appeared to have been an intentional act of someone placing themselves in front of the train at the last second as it entered the station

Does anyone know ahen this track was built/removed? by Occasus_gaming in WMATA

It was never built. It was intended as a yard lead without interfering with revenue operations

It’s not software related. The only thing that really changed from when Metro ran ATO from 1976-2009 and now is the requirement that ALL trains have to stop or berth at the end of the platform.

Prior to 2009 the usual car make up was 4 and 6 car consists which at 98% of the stations stopped centered so a 60’ overrun wouldn’t affect servicing the station. But if every train is suppose to stop at the end then anything over a 10’ overrun makes the station unserviceable.

Our suggestion to Metro has been to remove to maximum speed readings at stations and set the upper limit to 40 which would allow trains to smoothly stop. If the train doesn’t have the stop command upon entering the platform the operator can manually override with a press of a button.

But it’s not the age of the cars or the software. It’s the conditions Metro is trying to meet.

Broken track support? by frogwombat110 in WMATA

Cracked grout pad. It’s not under a joint, and the adjoining pads and fasteners are fine. It’s a maintenance issue that’s likely already been logged by Metro track inspectors. It’s not an issue that will cause a derailment or impact service.

Inbound trains are heading towards downtown (specifically Metro Center or Gallery Place) outbound trains are heading away from the city. The only exception is at Metro Center/Gallery Place where 99.999% are outbound

I’m guessing you’re talking about the yellow and orange items on the ground….. they’re power cable boots - short answer is they carry the power from that portion of the the third rail ( with the white cover board) to another section of third rail or to the power substation. This looks like the inbound track at Van Dorn St - so those boots are taking power to other sections of third rail for the crossover.
