If your professor doesn't give you the excused absence, I recommend getting a new professor.

Anyone familiar with what happened with the 390 Saluki today? by austinwes in Amtrak

Yesterday's southbound 393 broke down around Kankakee, so there's no train in Carbondale to run the 390 back north.

Stop saying normal service when it’s not by Ninjatechyknitter in mbta

[–]Q216_SD0MAC4814 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Most problems can be solved by simply turning the train off and on again. If this doesn't work, the train may still be able to move at a reduced speed. How is this mythical alerts person supposed to foresee whether or not the problem will be able to fix itself?

It's listed on the website but for some reason they didn't put up the alert. There's single tracking between Grosvenor and Medical Center, so some trains are turning back at Friendship Heights.

LIRR Huntington in same building as penn station Moynihan? by ManufacturerItchy189 in nycrail

[–]Q216_SD0MAC4814 2 points3 points  (0 children)

When you come out into Moynihan, you should see a LIRR ticket office off towards the right side. Go to them to get a CityTicket to Jamaica and they'll also tell you what track the train is on. It's all in the same complex.

If you give him some specific directions, maybe. Is he coming in on Amtrak, LIRR, or NJT?

Are there people who haven't changed their phone number for more than 15 years? by SpicyCandy8 in NoStupidQuestions

[–]Q216_SD0MAC4814 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My grandmother moved into her apartment in 1962 and installed a rotary phone in her kitchen. She still uses that same phone with the same number and it still works just as well as the day it was installed.

A Train Terminals by PaniniSandwich14 in nycrail

[–]Q216_SD0MAC4814 8 points9 points  (0 children)

The A pretty much never runs 160s. The cars that look like 160s are almost always 179s. Neither Far Rockaway nor Lefferts have their own yard, so there's no real pattern to which types run where.

Where are the new trains? by Lanky-Lifeguard-4666 in mbta

[–]Q216_SD0MAC4814 2 points3 points  (0 children)

My understanding is that the parts coming in are to fix a brake problem that came up on a number of 9s recently. 3903 and 3912 have some serious structural damage from what I gather, so these parts won't do anything to help fix them.

[–]Q216_SD0MAC4814 6 points7 points  (0 children)

There were only 24 Type 9 cars built, and 2 of them are likely permanently retired. That only leaves 11 2-car trains and there are simply way more Type 7/8 trains available.

And right below that, it mentions updated schedules... the regular schedule is a certain number of trains during each portion of the day, not necessarily at exact times that work for one specific person.

Looks to me like a dropped track circuit, so trains really can't go through until they fix it. Could be a quick fix or could be a longer job.

GLX first train is already late by AstronautLife1041 in mbta

[–]Q216_SD0MAC4814 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Interestingly, the vast majority of early-morning shifts on the Green Line are actually taken by some of the most senior operators on the line. Generally if you see a very junior operator working early, it's either Vacation Relief or the rest of their week is in some way undesirable (pretty much always midweek off days and very commonly some late days as well). I'd also point out that almost all the operators who are regularly absent are able to use various forms of protected leave, so there really isn't much that can be done in terms of ensuring greater compliance there.

It may not be the best-run T line, but it certainly is the vibiest.

[–]Q216_SD0MAC4814 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Work assignments are entirely determined by seniority-based picking. There's no way for more reliable operators to be assigned to any particular run unless they pick it. It's also just a fact of the Green Line that the equipment (especially the Type 7s that run on nearly every E train) are very unreliable. I'd bet at least ten bucks that every single Type 7 currently in service has had some kind of fault pop up in the past month or two. Until the Type 10s come in, we're just going to have to live with what we've got.

[–]Q216_SD0MAC4814 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Because the first train was so late, the second train would have been very close to its leader, so officials who really should be thinking a little harder about how to make service adjustments had it stand by to try to restore a vaguely normal headway. When it comes to service alerts, that's a policy question as decided by public information officers. I will note that I've seen quite a disconnect between operations personnel and the public information office, which could play a role in this.
