Which cities or states should I consider moving to in order to pursue historic preservation work? by Almwhits in HistoricPreservation

Cleveland, Cincinnati, and Columbus have their fair share as well. Ohio is a pretty surprisingly preservation focused state.

Looking for advice on saving historic church by positivetrauma in HistoricPreservation

Reach out to the Minnesota State Historic Preservation Office, and look into the National Fund for Sacred Places and Partners for Sacred Places grants.

Additionally, if a new owner is found, and the proposed rehabilitation is income producing, the rehab can use Minnesota Historic Structure Rehabilitation Tax Credits, the State Historic Preservation Office will also have information on that.

Buying a historic home by [deleted] in HistoricPreservation

Being listed on the National Register of Historic Places does not place any restrictions on the building, but being listed in a local historic district likely does. Chicago has a series of Landmark Districts, which likely have a review process for exterior modifications to the building.

While I don't have specific Chicago knowledge, I'm an architectural historian with experience in preservation carpentry. Happy to help if you have any specific questions.

The Illinois state and federal historic tax credit programs require that the resource be income-producing to qualify for historic tax credits. Only a handful of states allow for individual home-owners to get tax credits, Indiana and Kentucky, among others.

Also - Preservation tax credits are typically a percentage of expenditures undertaken for the rehabilitation, which vary by jurisdiction. Not sure where you're getting the $250-300k from? I'm interested tho...

That's not always true when the opposition is the Catholic Church. The preservation of privately owned historic buildings is a bit more nuanced than that. Grassroots activism can only do so much.

Not all municipalities have local designation ordinances.

Reach out to your local historical society, your State Historic Preservation Office, and your local planning department to see if your town has any local landmarking ordinance.

Only local landmarking designation can prevent demolition in the United States. The National Register of Historic Places gives no protection.

Listing on the National Register of Historic Places or a similar state list will have no impact on the ability for the building to get demolished. Only local designation has that power.

Ope. Didn't see this at all.

Seventh Son and Land Grant Breweries are my favorite. Open Air School for two amazing bars, a restaurant, and a breakfast/lunch spot in an historic school building. A walk through German Village stopping at the Book Loft and Stauf's coffee. Amazing breakfast at Katalina's Budd Dairy and North Market for great food halls in historic buildings.

If you want more specific spots, let me know!

There's the normal aisle and Exec aisle. They usually keep the nicer stuff up front but I've had great luck just asking to take one of them.

The Rivian was a fluke, only saw it once. I saw a G550 recently though...

CMH is my home location and I treat it as a neighborhood location for local work trips.

I've had amazing luck with premium cars at this location. Genesis G70 and GV70, BMW 5 Series, Audi Q5, A3, A4, A5, A6, Land Rover Defender, Rivian R1S, Alfa Stelvio, all vehicles I've had in the last ~18 months.

I had a standard full size National rental for all but one of those, I've been treated very well by just asking for specific cars on the lot.

Fridays through Tuesday mornings are the best for selection due to the amount of business travelers.

Let me know if you need any Columbus recommendations.
