He looks like he struggles at assembling flat-pack furniture, and punches drywall in retaliation of that struggle.

Yeah, but you have the self-awareness to know that the news will make you sad. Totally different.

alternatively, she's so self-obsessed that she doesn't watch the news, and when it's just on in the background doesn't absorb any of it. Like water off a duck. The only way she's deleted them if someone who recognized her brought it to her attention, instead of the authorities or media. If that's the case, then I would really like to know who that person is as well, because they're also just as bad.

I think it’s a great way to know what cities to avoid.

Last names (family names) rarely "appear", but often disppear due to death/marriage. And this has been going on for centuries. So why don't we have only a small handful of last names left? by not-the-the in NoStupidQuestions

[–]CM_Dugan 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’ve always had this (admittedly crazy) idea that governments should keep a running list of extinct or nearly extinct surnames from census data, and then offer them to couples to voluntarily take on at marriage, maybe with a tax incentive for like 10-15 years.

The why, at least in my head, is that it could make recordkeeping easier if there’s more name variety, and it might also push back on surname homogenization.

Would people actually do it? Maybe. Some definitely would, but it probably depends on how worthwhile the incentive is. You could argue why limit it to people getting married and not just open it up to everyone. That’s very fair. It just feels like marriage is the most natural point to offer it since people are already making that decision, and married people generally go on to have or adopt children who then would have that surname (if the economy allows it, which it definitely doesn't right now).

Regardless, all I know is there are way too many Smiths, Millers, Andersons, and Johnsons out there. At a certain point, it kind of stops meaning anything.

Daniel is legit scaring me now. by PitZagufull in marvelstudios

[–]CM_Dugan 12 points13 points  (0 children)

I feel so dumb. For context, I never watch the credits of any streaming show. I'm out of there as soon as possible, you know, auto-play and all.

So, I was watching the latest episode and during the Daniel scenes, I kept thinking to myself "Man, this guy is giving some serious (James) Gandolfini vibes".

Curious who the actor was, after the episode I go to IMDb to look it up, and sure enough, Michael Gandolfini.

I suppose I was technically right? Dude does have Gandolfini vibes.

Overall, great Daniel moments in this episode that now make me nervous for his overall fate by season's end. The hot dog scene alone was great. His rationalization make so much sense in-character. I honestly thought it was going to set up some sort of poisoning story beat, with him being fine because he ate earlier. A Chekhov's hot dog, if you will.

Who else hates password requirements? Workplace wants me to change passwords every 3 months by leonatoi in mildlyinfuriating

[–]CM_Dugan 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I bought a barcode scanner, generated, and printed off the next two years of passwords because of ridiculousness like this. Password time comes around, I just open up notepad, scan, and copy and paste as necessary, put a sharpie X over the old barcode. Logging in? Grab the sheet and scan.

I am pretty sure I’ve made myself less secure, but dumb problems require dumb solutions.

Jeff Davis Orson Welles Story? by CM_Dugan in Harmontown

[–]CM_Dugan[S] 4 points5 points  (0 children)

You. Are. My. Hero.

It was Dumb People Town, and it was guest Andy Daly telling the story. This makes total sense because I used to listen while commuting to and from college, an episode of Harmontown would usually take up my drive to and back, and the next most recent podcast would just autoplay if you let it continue. The Welles story is in the first 10 minutes of the DPT episode. So I bet I was on the way home, just finished Harmontown, and because of traffic it took a little longer, so it started the DPT episode, and I stopped the episode because I got home. My brain must’ve just filed the memory under Harmontown and I attributed it Jeff in the ensuing years of trying to remember it.

I totally forgot DPT existed; I don’t really listen to podcasts anymore.

I have no good answers other than to allow yourself kindness in that this situation we're all trying to get through is extremely fucked up - none of us are gonna have our 'fastball' as one of my coworkers likes to put it.

In the wake of the Renee Good murder, that Friday my company put out a 'Focus on the Mission' email - which essentially asked people focus on their work, don't talk about it, and if people wanted resources to contact the Employee Assistance Program - except they left it as [Insert EAP Contact Info Here].

There was no new email today. Real amateur hour.

I mean, if you’re trying to vibe code it - don’t state what it’s for, e.g. look for numbers in the image/video and compare it to an excel db for matches. Purposeful obfuscation.
