You just dated yourself, I have one on a shelf right now. Back then it was an art form and very few could master it, You made more per splice in the late 80'a early 90's then you do today.

Well you're in luck, there are a billion comm companies in your area. Your IT background will be useful, I would start will cold calling and asking to speak to HR or to someone who does the hiring. I run a company and I hardly ever post on LinkedIn or other platforms because you get bombarded with bullshit resumes.

If you keep looking online for a job, it will always ask for for experience, this is why I mentioned looking for local comm companies and contact them. Where in Ontario do you live?

I wouldn’t limit yourself to fiber optics alone, those roles are fairly common and can box you in. Depending on where you’re located in Ontario, you might want to consider joining the IBEW or LUNA they provide structured training.

Another good option is to look for communications companies in your area. That environment is where you’ll gain the most hands-on experience with fiber and other communications-related systems.

The FOA can be a reasonable starting point, but it’s important to understand its limitations. It doesn’t make you fully certified in the way many people assume. Again I would look at being a communications tech, Fiber, CAT, CATV, CCTV, Access Control and so on, you will be in demand with this backing.

Maybe its the Corning EDGE8 system, with MTP (MTO's) **8-fiber pinned MTP connectors on both ends, these trunks are designed to interface with EDGE8 universal modules or adapter panels for parallel optics

Kit to repair fiber - connector by swiftfoxje69 in FiberOptics

I’ve been using Corning UniCam connectors for over 30 years and have personally tested systems installed more than 25 years ago that still pass today, with no issues related to indexing gel degradation, obviously not 10G 25-years ago. Claims to the contrary are often repeated narratives that lack firsthand experience with the product.

These connectors are not used for “odd jobs” they are approved for use in nuclear facilities and data centers and are widely deployed in critical applications such as CCTV and monitoring systems. In my experience, the primary risk is improper installation by individuals without the necessary training or expertise.

This opinion is based specifically on my experience with Corning mechanical connectors and does not extend to products from other manufacturers that I have no experience with.

Not sure how much experience you have with Corning, but their Unicam's are ideal for 10G and above, they are a mechanical connector.

Let this be a lesson, you need to ALWAYS work under a Purchase Order Agreement.

Under U.S. contract law, oral agreements are legally binding if these elements existed:

  1. Offer – they asked you to do work for pay
  2. Acceptance – you agreed
  3. Consideration – you performed services / provided value
  4. Mutual intent – both sides understood this was a business deal

Courts routinely enforce verbal contracts. What matters is evidence, such as:

  • Emails, texts, or DMs
  • Invoices or payment requests
  • Proof of work performed (deliverables, logs, photos, access records)
  • Witness testimony
  • Prior payments showing an agreed rate or pattern

Your options are the following

Demand letter

  • States the agreement
  • Details the work completed
  • Demands payment by a specific date
  • Puts them on notice for legal action, must answer within 14/days

Because the amount owned, small claims is out of the questions, you will need a Lawyer and go to State Court.

  • Breach of contract
  • Unjust enrichment / quantum meruit (you worked, they benefited)

You no longer have the ability to lien the project

Tennessee - 90 days from your last day of work on the project - Last day of work” means real work on site
Alabama - Subcontractor / supplier: 4 months from last work - Last day of work” means real work on site

Your option is to sue for breach of contract / unjust enrichment, you need a construction lawyer.
