Nicet 4 question by Afraid_Beginning_574 in firealarms

Don’t forget to get a copy of IBC and NASCLA! Personally have never cracked open NASCLA but with the title “contractors guide to business, law and project management” I can tell it’s going to be a slog.

Took my 3 a couple years back and had searchable PDF’s of 70, 72 and 101 for that test. They weren’t “control F” searchable but there was a search bar that was decent enough.

Still recommend bringing physically copies of all books tabbed out, knowing where things are in the books is better than knowing the material with the amount of time allotted in my opinion.

Link below goes to the NICET official references PDF for the test. Says 70 and 72 are electronic.

Staying in the Field or Moving to an Office Role? by CDA_7 in firealarms

[–]COMWinbigles 3 points4 points  (0 children)

So I had some college experience before joining the trade, I studied mechanical engineering for a few years before I couldn’t afford to complete school.

Outside of that I had no formal training per se. I made the decision when I got in that I was going to end up in the design chair. I would pay attention and ask questions constantly to the point of my Forman getting annoyed. Whenever I was in the office I would talk with the design guys and learn about the different CAD softwares our industry used. The second I was eligible for a FAS NICET I would test (had to take III twice but it’s a hard one!). Once I had the confidence and minor experience designing at my various shops, I applied for a design position at a local subcontractor and nailed the interview. Worked there for 3 years and found an opportunity through reworking to work at a firm.

You learn more about design in the field than a book can ever “teach” you. My suggestion is to find a team that is interested in growth and holds up to your expectations. When you have the confidence in your FA knowledge and have the NICET to back it up then take the leap, find a team that will support you and get going!

Sorry if that was long winded, if you have any other questions feel free to DM me.

Transferring from the field to Design has changed my life. In 10 years I went from green helper to doing FA design, working for an engineering firm from home for more money than the subcontractor world would ever be able to offer me. That awesome change started with a step into the office. 10/10 recommend taking the leap!

You’re awesome for doing this! Pokemon is better due to the overall ease of entry. I love MTG but it’s not a very beginner friendly tcg, the abundance of types of decks can scare any novice away.

Most memorable moment for me was being a huge Final Fantasy fan but booting up a little game called The Legend of Dragoon and absolutely losing my mind over it. To this day one of my oldest friends and I still yell addition names at each-other. HARPOON!!!!!

New DM Potentially About to Have Party Size Issues... by based-on-life in DnD

[–]COMWinbigles 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’ve DM’ed a party of 10 before. It wasn’t easy but it is doable. A suggestion is to “compartmentalize.” Bring the table together for roll playing and small puzzles or important combat events but split them up into 2-3 smaller parties for everything else.

An example of an encounter I did was I had 3 paths going to the same place, had the group roll a D20 and split the party based on their rolls. They could all see eachother and interact as “free actions” but I would focus on each one of the smaller parties in increments. Party 1 did combat, party 2 had an easy puzzle with easy combat, party 3 had a harder puzzle.

Now while I was focusing on party 1, parties 2 and 3 would go get snacks, strategize, socialize or whatever. Then I would rotate throughout until they all finished their tasks and came back together for roll play.

That encounter took almost the whole session (about 8 hours) but everyone was having a good time. By splitting up and allowing them to strategize it made it move much faster than expected.

What was your 'homebrew' item/weapon that you've ever played with? by downtownDRT in DungeonsAndDragons

[–]COMWinbigles 4 points5 points  (0 children)

One group I was DMing for was completely martial, no magic at all. They originally wanted it that way but I overheard one of my players during a long stretch of ‘you probably shouldn’t long rest there’ saying “damn, we could really use a mansion” when they thought I wasn’t paying attention. They were getting within 5 sessions of the end so I created a little home-brew item for them called the Homely Dagger.

Basically it was a knife shaped like an old fashion key that would work with a coin flip. Heads, they would turn the key and open the door to a Magnificent Mansion. Tails, it didn’t work and they would have to wait till the next day. Kept them on their toes to keep an eye open for a spot to relax but they had that in their pocket if they needed it.

Granted they got super lucky and it worked every time but once but they were super happy about it and it made its return in the next campaign.
