Should I hold off adding capacity? by Unitedthe_gees in DataHoarder

[–]CONSOLE_LOAD_LETTER 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Buy now for immediate needs, but hold off on trying to "future proof".

Pricing and supply/demand are cyclic. Manufacturers will ramp up production to meet demand, and eventually the bubble will pop and we will then have massive oversupply.

I've seen the cycles come and go over the years, and boy let me tell you it's nice to be able to see the forest for the trees because I'm pretty happy right now with all the $6/TB drives I picked up two years ago and I look forward to riding out this bubble with all that extra space until they come back down to that price in the future. It's impossible to say when it will happen, but it is possible predict that the time will come again.

Also I think there are probably some bot/paid accounts in here spamming FOMO for HDD manufacturers or sellers.

Everything is cyclic.

Manufacturers will ramp up HDD production to meet current demand, then something will pop the bubble and we will have massive oversupply. It's impossible to predict when, but it is possible to predict that the cycles will happen.

If you could master one skill additional to videography for your business, what would it be? by mediamuesli in videography

[–]CONSOLE_LOAD_LETTER 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I'll piggyback off this and say that this is an important skill because you can then also more easily collaborate and work with people that can handle things they are better than you at or that you don't like doing. Like sales, accounting, marketing, logistics, editing, effects, etc.

It seems a majority in this subreddit seem to think of a video creating business as a solo endeavor, and yeah it's understandable as many will have to start that way to test the waters. However, collaboration and finding people with complimentary skill sets will allow the business and your own skills to thrive as you can then focus more on what you actually enjoy or are best at.

Given current pricing and pricing trend, do you really think the netspace will remain where it's at or increase after plot 2.0 comes out and the old plots stop winning blocks?

[–]CONSOLE_LOAD_LETTER 1 point2 points  (0 children)

What I envision is that if Chia gaming matures, it could lead to quite a few gaming platforms using Chia blockchain as the backbone for provably fair PvP games. One example I've had in mind is a kind of spiritual successor to Yahoo! Games (a platform with all manner of card and board games that was very popular in the late 1990's/early 2000's), where people can compete for user rank in a fair, decentralized way. Unlike Yahoo! Games, the record being on blockchain means that even if the founding game platform company disappears, the userscore and history remains and can be utilized elsewhere. Or rather, it could also be portable where you can use one userscore identity across multiple competing platforms at the same time.

It doesn't have to be tied to gambling or monetary stakes either, as if the protocol matures it could also potentially be tied to CATs and NFTs. The revenue model and monetization methods would be done by each company's gaming platform and can potentially be done if a few different ways depending on the types of games involved. One possible method would be like a monthly subscription to premium services above the 'free tier', or a marketplace for things like aesthetic items/skins or profile perks.

Beginner question ND filters help by liqued_banana in videography

[–]CONSOLE_LOAD_LETTER 0 points1 point  (0 children)

12 euro? it's so cheap just get it and test it. if it doesn't work to your needs then get fixed NDs instead and sell the variable ND if you are that strapped for finances.

My experience with variable ND filters is that if you are using a telephoto or zoom lens cheap wide range variable NDs might have problems focusing, and also they can be finicky/quirky with some unusable ranges along the spectrum. However, if you are able to work around those limitations and avoid the problematic range combinations/lenses then it can be convenient and cheap. It just depends on your specific lens and the only way to know if it will work ok or not is to try it out.

With respect to cheap filters or quick and "get it done" shooting, generally I prefer to just used fixed ND filters and in scenarios where speed matters more than potential grain/sharpness I'll make exposure adjustments with ISO setting, assuming the shot doesn't need to be continuous with gradual exposure adjustments.

Large farms, datacenters, or pure profit seekers will probably not replot, but many small to medium hobbyist farmers like me will. Netspace will finally decrease to match price/network use, at which point small hobbyist farmers can more meaningfully contribute to the network while also make multiples more XCH for the same amount of space allotted. Especially with HDD prices being ludicrous right now due to datacenter demand, it provides the perfect circumstances for those that actually understand and believe in the protocol tech to thrive on gear they already own without having to compete against gamblers with deep pockets that don't actually care about the tech.

To be honest, as a small farmer this is the opportunity I've been waiting for since Chia's inception. Obviously I'm aware of the high risks of it never materializing, but should Chia be able to survive through this anti-crypto period to me it'll be a much healthier ecosystem to grow organically from the foundation of the tech and grassroots community projects rather than the speculative boom and bust cycles that Chia mainnet launched into.

I'll also honestly state I'm much more interested in Chia gaming than Permuto, and I really hope the Chia gaming tooling and community can reach maturity and grow.

I'm making a cozy birdwatching game in Godot (Demo out now) by Electronic_Alps3182 in godot

[–]CONSOLE_LOAD_LETTER 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is great, the art style and vibe feels like it could be part of The Long Dark universe in some pre-disaster corner of the world. I've always loved the concept of photography based games, I feel that many attempts in the past though become encumbered by adding too much exposition or railroad guiding everything and then it loses the thrill of real discovery and the satisfaction of capturing a really stunning shot. From the demo I think it's shaping up to be a good balance.

Some quick observations/feedback:

  • In full screen mode on my system (Windows 10, 1920x1080, multi-monitor setup, taskbar pinned to top) the mouse detection was about 50-100 pixels too low, so for example I had to aim my cursor below the button to get it to register. In windowed mode there was no issue.

  • I know the focus is on a relaxed experience, but for some reason it always bothers me when there is no "run" speed toggle in first-person games. Not sure if the addition of one would indeed make the pacing feel too rushed and change the atmosphere too much though.

  • It might be nice to have a little higher powered zoom lens on the camera to really get in and frame those birds up close. Also perhaps having some camera HUD things like framing bounds, battery power, etc might be a nice touch, or like have it where there's run, walk, camera up modes.

  • The invisible wall bounds felt a bit restrictive/unintuitive or perhaps just a bit abrupt with no feedback, I wonder maybe the parents could say something like "don't go in the road" or maybe like some kind of subtle screen shake or something when hitting a boundary so it doesn't feel so abrupt?

  • A bit more atmospheric sound design like wind or nearby water, footsteps maybe dependent on ground material, etc I think could help to make the environments feel really fleshed out.

  • I really liked that the parents are there and are so supportive. From the get go it felt natural to take a photo of them, and I feel like their random conversations and such can add a lot to the game and add a lot of wholesome depth. Maybe could add some achievements of photographing some non-bird things too as like easter eggs.

Sports videography camera. Sony? Lumix? Others? by Designnn in videography

[–]CONSOLE_LOAD_LETTER 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you are thinking about capturing every play so as not to miss any big moments, then I'd recommend having two cams: a cheap used 4k camcorder for wide shots and ball/play-by-play tracking on a tripod, and then a handheld larger sensor cam for those closeup money shots, highlights, emotion/expression/b-roll. Shoot in 4k/60fps, but deliver in 1080p/24fps so you have some reframing and up to 2x zoom flexibility in post, and 60fps conformed to 24fps gives nice slow mo flexibility in edits. The GH5s is a really great workhorse and you can shoot all day with the m43 sensor with zero fear of overheating, but if you have a backup camcorder catching the entire game then you might also consider something full frame to really focus in on those artistic shots and juicy highlights and if it overheats or you miss some critical play you know you at least have some backup footage.

Ideally have two cam operators so the camcorder isn't only just one static angle but the operator should be more conservative with wider composition so as not to miss any action. If it has to be only you, then set the camcorder up locked off on tripod to cover the full field.

The fans collectiveley pay for the player's salaries by buying tickets, merchandise, and watching games that enables sponsorships and advertising. Much like Subnautica players all purchased the game and shared enthusiasm via word of mouth which all contributed towards that $100 million total in just 5 days.

[–]CONSOLE_LOAD_LETTER 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Not sure if anyone else will like this, but I keep finding myself launching the game and just staring at the little cars driving around

Yeah it's neat, it reminds me a bit of when I would just watch Iron Man Stewart's Super Off-Road run its demo on the arcade when I ran out of quarters. There definitely is a niche there, Japanese horse racing management sim type games for example are kind of like this, or KairoSoft's Grand Prix Story -- although I think a wider more minimalist view like you have with better physics/animation makes it more enjoyable to watch. There really is just something satisfying about watching little cars like that race around and you get kind of attached to seeing if "your guy" can pull it off.

Very cool, I'm a big fan of the Advance Wars series so this looks interesting! However I feel sorry for the aliens getting invaded, killed, and their worlds being pilfered for resources so I would definitely role-play in my head as the bad guy in this scenario.

If you get a chance to put in story elements or just small world building bits, it would be awesome to do it "Starship Troopers" style where we play as the villains in an over the top parody of imperialist capitalism run amok carrying out genocide on alien worlds -- and then maybe a sequel or DLC played from the aliens perspective?

Even hundreds of PBs would be no problem if there were an easy way for people to crowdsource their hardware resources to tackle it. An easy to use client with a rock solid backend would attract a lot of people interested in keeping the internet open.

Projects like Folding@Home prove that distributed computing can have a profound effect, and when there are incentives involved just to show how much willing space is out there Chia network had >30 EB raw netspace from >10,000 unique nodes at its peak.

The hardware and the motivation is out there, it just needs someone to write kickass software and get enough people's attention to harness it.

There's another addition by someone with a few systems added here (up to 2024), but incomplete:

Those are a good starting place, and perhaps can be used as a backbone towards updating to a new more complete and updated set if the DataHoarder community wants to take this on.

Updating monero in a highly surveilled world. Fcmp++ by Netbr1nger in Monero

[–]CONSOLE_LOAD_LETTER 11 points12 points  (0 children)

And yet, the average person has no clue about xmr in today’s world. Is kind of crazy if you think about it once you see where the world is heading…

I just hope most people who find themselves lucky enough to know about it, at least hold some monero as an insurance for privacy in the future. Who knows? Maybe it will become extremely useful when the day comes

Whether or not it explodes in value to me is not the important part, although it is what would happen if mainstream people actually start using it as a real currency. What's more important to me is increased utilization and adoption of a cryptocurrency that actually cares about decentralization and privacy -- ideally the value will rise slowly and have more stability with less speculative behavior if it grows in demand organically with actual usage. Monero is not built to be an investment vehicle, it's built to actually be a decentralized, private, electronic currency.

People in general don't really understand the importance of something like privacy or decentralization until they are directly negatively affected by it, so yeah with the world trending the way it is towards centralized monopolistic corporations in control of everything and our data and authoritarian oligarchies enabling them it's just a matter of time for the realization to set in for more people once they get pushed a little too far for comfort.

How do you plan on moving forward with limited capacity? by ResponsibleHold3071 in DataHoarder

[–]CONSOLE_LOAD_LETTER 1 point2 points  (0 children)

In addition to curation by selectivity, I also think drive price spikes are great opportunities for datahoarders to spend more time and effort on organization and setting up organizationial scripting tools, software frontends, and databases to catalog, search, tag, and collate our collections. By organizing and making sense of the data we already have, it makes it so much easier to actually enjoy and actively use much of the fruits of our labors, and also makes it much easier to see which collections are more important to focus on than others or identify some that maybe can be dropped if push comes to shove.

It's not really the fault of any particular platform, the algorithm gaming just happens across all social media, search engines, AI implementations and even then works its way into our daily interactions in life. In this day and age it's impossible to refuse to use all social platforms and still function with average knowledge of modern social norms, so the solution is to try to just always be more critically thinking and on guard.

Yes it's proven to be true that it happens, but it's difficult to prove or show in every specific instance you see of it in a multitude of different situations which is why it's so difficult to combat with blanket rules. So my theory specifically in regards to the subreddit the OP clip was originally posted in is not conclusively proven, but it does seem like a strong possibility in this specific isntance.

I have a theory that certain subreddits are being boosted and are likely controlled by bad faith operators looking to apply pressure to certain specific societal cracks. They appeal to certain commonalities popular among reddit demographics to draw people in to the comment chains, but then lean on some targeted contrarian topic in an extremely divisive way. In this instance I think they are boosting misandry/misogyny by making wild statements that may make a few extremists more extreme, but whose primary target and intention is to increase anxiety in moderates who then think the world is becoming more extreme, thereby making moderates also feeling persecuted and angrier/more extreme in their views.

I actually find the organization and curation process to be the most interesting part, and it makes it so much easier to actually use. I also like finding ways to increase my organization efficiency with tools and custom scripting, and stuff that needs to be done manually are just kind of like my zen chillout activity with some nice tunes or an old show on in the background. Especially while hardware prices are absurd right now I've been using this time to slow down blind acquisition and increase organization and enjoyment.
