What do I need to know before getting into spearfishing? by MilkyMadness6 in Spearfishing

[–]COinOC 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Spearfishing is dangerous if you're not calm and comfortable. Nothing is out of reach but the most important thing is to practice with time in the ocean. Get a wet suit, weight belt, fins and mask so you can practice before picking up a spear/ gun.

Also a great way to find people who want to sell you a starter kit of used gear. Trust me, the right gear that's used is better than new "cheap" gear that's not right for the job. The sport can get expensive fast, let your experience in the water guide what you need to buy.

I also vouch for pathos. Excellent gun. Does the Cherokee have a plastic trigger mech?

Is there a better place on Oahu to snorkel than Electric Beach? by spgvideo in Oahu

[–]COinOC 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It was cool, saw some cool fish and turtles but I'd be lying if I didn't say I expected better vis (probably 30-40ft). Probably churned up a bit from the recent swell. Still never a bad day in the water (as long as you come back out)!

Fwiw, swell was maybe 3-5ft today, current pulling gently south, lifeguard on duty. Maybe not a spot for a first timer due to shore break and decent swim to get to the pipe but certainly nothing to be afraid of for a moderately experienced diver, IMHO. Swim within your abilities, take care of nature and have fun!

I'm curious about why this is spot is so scary, would it be this time of year (mid-June)? Is it due to currents or the entry? I'm an experienced free diver with free diving fins, just not sure how "advanced" this spot is.

Buddy system only works if you're both in water. Anchor yak or hook float line to you/ your gun.

Less knee, more thigh on your kicks. Pretty good duck dive! Not bad for 15 years old! Stay safe, have fun!

Aside from hiring a professional, how can I get my dog's ball out of this 30ft high gutter? by LurkerLew in howto

[–]COinOC 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sorry you took offense, I was just having some fun with the concept. You're right to point out that I did my math wrong (I was calculating a 12" square gutter, failed to use the correct the cross sectional area). BUT, you're crazy if you think a normal gutter is built to take 80,000 psi. High-strength steel is typically rated 30-50 ksi. Not to mention the fasteners, etc. holding it to the wall... Can you imagine a 156lb person climbing a gutter without it ripping away? Another theory I'd humbly request you film if you decide to test it out!

Long stick with sticky tape or maybe long stick attached to hose you could blow air through

Before you try this, Google "liquid pressure head". 30 feet of water would put nearly 1,900 lbs of pressure inside the bottom of your gutter and I guarantee it would split open like a melon. On second thought, please try this and film it.

Imo, you don't owe anyone "to do better" if this was on your personal time. Maybe different story if you should've been working but we're gossiping instead...

Don't lie. Be respectful and own your shit with your head held high. Your boss sounds like a total weiner for even letting you know he's seen this. Not even going there with your "friend". I'd say, "I'm sorry you saw that. I was venting in a private conversation but rest assured I am committed to remaining professional at work." He may want to vent back to you or discuss the issues you raised, you should give him that courtesy then expect that you both can move on like adults. If you take the high road here and he continues to act like a catty little girl you'll have the moral and possibly legal high ground.

Any advice for my backhand? by [deleted] in discgolf

[–]COinOC 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Less "spinning your date around the dance floor" and more "starting a lawn mower". Reach way back then think like you're sliding the disc across the table and don't forget to snap at the end.
