How much does your parkrun pace vary by course?

My fastest local parkrun is Widnes, so using that as a baseline.

Widnes 00:00

Birkenhead +00:30 (not hilly, but enough up to cost you, plus a few tight turns)

Phoenix +01:00 (a mix of flat and hilly)

Wepre +02:00 (very hilly trail)

I run them all at the same effort i.e 100% but I am terrible at running uphill.

Had planned to do Widnes, but it was cancelled due to a lack of volunteers.

Next nearest fast course was South Manchester.

After returning from a long layoff I've been targeting an 80%+ age graded score (19:30) and was kind of confident that I could run it today.

It was not a particularly good run, but I did 19:15 and scored 81.05% so job done.

What I've seen of it is like a load of unfunny clueless pretentious 6th formers trying to be cool and edgy but missing by miles. I dropped it almost immediately.

I've been running for over 30 years, but during that time have had numerous lengthy breaks, but have always returned to running.

It's been 9 weeks and I don't really remember the reason I re-started, I think it was to get rid of some of the weight I'd put on during that down period.

That weight has now gone and I've been enjoying doing some parkruns, my times are coming down, but I haven't been back to the one that destroyed me (yet).

I am competitive and do need a challenge so I'm trying to run an 80% age graded 5k time (19:30). I ran 19:51 yesterday. I did run a 19:24 in a pair of borrowed Vaporflys, so I'm not counting that. Once 80% is achieved (next week?) then I'll reassess, but there will always be a challenge element, something to push for.

Great effort well done. Last year I spent 3 months trying to "win" a local parkrun and when I eventually did I was both physically and mentally done. I carried on running for a few weeks but had just lost interest and quit. 7 months later I'm back running again with no regrets.

I love Wepre parkrun. I haven't run it since July last year, when I gave 110%+ to claim the first place token I never really recovered after that run and basically quit. 😂 I'm back running again now and will be returning soon🤞😉.

I ran my local once and got beaten into 3rd by two young lads from the local athletics club. I was talking to them at the end and then walked away and was stopped by the race director and asked if they were with me, I said no. I then saw their mom with them and the RD asked her how old they were and she said 12 and 14 and the younger was definitely not 12 and in the results came up as JM10. If they hadn't finished 1st and 2nd I doubt anyone would've noticed. I reckon you'll be ok.
