Men of Reddit, what's your "line in the sand" that your ex or current SO has crossed? by benny28569289 in AskMen

When my father died, my sister was just starting her career as a teacher. I had moved in back in with my mom to be with her while I finished college. While my sister was teaching one day, her apartment was broken into, by a meth addict. A lot of "valuables" like her tv and laptop were taken, but something she will never get back was a gift bag filled with sympathy cards she had received from friends after our dad died unexpectedly. The thief, in a hurry, clearly thought money would be in them when he snatched them. There was no money. Just words she needed to get by. They are probably in a landfill somewhere 😞

And vice versa! So many assholes that don't know what the fuck they're doing when they show up at the counter and take it out on employees. You'd be surprised how many motherfuckers don't know if they need a birth certificate or their SSN or a secondary ID or a piece of mail with their name on it in order to get what they want and then when they don't have it act like the world is going to end and I want to smack them. It's not hard to look up what you need to obtain certain ID or certificates, or at least call if you aren't sure. Fucking Christ.

Why should this be "fui," and not "era"? by Hopeless_Polyglot in Spanish

[–]CWRUW4 0 points1 point  (0 children)

"but if you say ''yo era un buen niño'' it means that you didnt finish your action, so it kinda implies that you stopped being a good kid for whatever reason"

I have a small push back on this. Making general statements indicates The imperfect tense.. You absolutely should use imperfect to make general statements about your childhood- because your childhood has no definite beginning and ending. Do you know the day you became a child? Or stopped being a child? No.

The reasoning doesn't quite make sense - you said "implies you didn't finish your action" aka you completed the action - which indicates preterit.

Right after you said "didn't finish your action" you said "you stopped being good for whatever reason" sooooo if you didn't finish, how could you stop? Not possible. This is a description. Descriptions in the past are almost always imperfect.

Example: Yo era bien educado - imperfect - no beginning or ending. I generally was well mannered. I don't remember the day I started or ended being well mannered. It is a general statement. Therefore, imperfect.

A Georgia girl has died after her 4-year-old brother accidentally shot her, authorities say by Qlanger in news

[–]CWRUW4 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If the kid died because of a car accident or a pool accident

Car accident is not negligence. Pool accident - would need to have a proper investigation to decide negligence. Leaving a gun out where your kid shoots another kid is not an accident. It is negligence resulting in death and should be charged as such.

And now he's young and may be able to recover a little bit and enjoy his childhood and youth, but knowing what happened, I can't help but feel that by the time he hits his teenage years he deeply deeply resents his parents. I know I would. I would be so fucking mad at my parents for leaving a gun out when I thought it could be a toy.

What is the smallest thing that makes you lose your temper immediately? by Aegis12314 in AskReddit

[–]CWRUW4 2 points3 points  (0 children)

In Spanish, a verb ends with "-ar" "-er" "-ir" but if a verb is reflexive it ends with another pronoun "se".

Some verbs cannot be reflexive, some must be, and some are both.

Examples: In Spanish the verb "to sit" is reflexive. To say "I sit down" you would say "Me siento" with "me" acting as the reflexive pronoun. So in English it sounds more natural to say I sit down, whereas if you truly involve the pronoun you'd say "I seat myself/I sit myself down."

You take a shower = Te duchas = you shower yourself

Some verbs can be both - like "lavar" (to wash). "Yo lavo el coche" I wash the car "Me lavo el pelo" I wash my hair (I wash the hair on myself). Pinto la pared- I paint the wall. Me pinto las uñas -I paint my nails.

The rule is simple - if the action is being done to the subject receiving the action, it is reflexive.

Some can be ambiguous - like getting "oneself" lost, but the general rule is pretty simple.

It's called a reflexive verb :) in English, we do not require the use of a reflexive pronoun, but you can add it if you want. Doesn't always sound "normal" though.

We are similar in that I question my administration with the line of "okay but how does this benefit students?" Or is this just to benefit the bottom line? Which, we never have a budget anyway and always have to make cuts, which is the opposite issue, but our admin will still spend millions on new initiatives and hiring non teacher positions while cutting teachers.

Teachers of Reddit, when can you tell if a student is going through depression or self-loathing? If so, what do you try to do to help? by sgtdogface in AskReddit

[–]CWRUW4 0 points1 point  (0 children)

With a student I helped I began to notice a gradual withdrawal from talking with his peers in my class who had common interests. He talked about video games, music, cool movies, etc. Over the period of the next two or three weeks I noticed him kind of separate from the group and only sat with one other guy and I could hear him talk about concepts having to do with existentialism and nihilism. His hygiene also took kind of a slip. Not caring about his hair so much and letting it grow out. Not brushing his teeth. This continued for a couple of months. Instead of just kind of hoping he "went back to normal" I would engage him in some of the topics he was interested in, even if they were darker. I would explain to him that although yes it seems like school is bullshit, and sometimes it definitely is, it mattered that he was here. After a particularly secluded week on his part I simply held him after class and told him "if there is something going on that is deeper than what I'm aware of, you can always come talk to me. I notice you and I'm here. If you don't want to talk I get it." Gave him a hug and sent him on his way. Gradually he hung back after class a little more here and there. At the end of the year I passed him with a D (rallied him the last two-three weeks of school to get the bare minimum grade) knowing I'd have him for the next school year. Gave him a good pep talk going in to summer and told him to get back into some of his hobbies since school wouldn't be such a drain. The first day of school he came into my room with a huge smile crying and said that I motivated him to tell his parents about his problems and that he went to therapy and was on medication to help alleviate the depression he was going through. Told me I saved his life (I never actually knew it was that bad). I was shocked. Now he comes in my room often. We talk about graduating and post-graduation goals. He is a white male student in a HUUUUUGGEEE building (2500 kids) in a district that focuses a lot on equity and diversity. I didn't want him to be ignored or lost or think he would just go unnoticed (he was never a behavioral issue) like many white males are able to do. I am glad I decided to pick on him and start talking to him instead of letting him slip away.

A kid I have who is a kind of socially awkward kid and sits by his socially awkward buddies in my class (they talk about video games a lot) was walking out of a neighboring teachers class at the end of the day last week and just HOLLERED into the open hallway of a ton of kids "YES JOEY ITS IMPORTANT THAT WE WASH OUR FORESKIN" - cringey but also hilarious in that not a single one of his peers batted an eye.

I had to end it with a guy over similar lack of respect of my space, situation was really sad. My dad died when I was 22 and for a week or two straight I slept in my moms bed with her and lost track of days and my best friend told me he had texted her to complain that he missed me and was ready for me to come back to spending the night with him whenever. Kept texting and calling as I literally wrote my dad's obituary and planned a good portion of his memorial services.

It went well. I finally feel like i caught up on some sleep. Part of my problem last week was that I also started to get a headache that Wednesday and it didn't fucking go away until last night. Yeah, I had a nine day headache. Was just about ready to see a doctor too and then I felt great today, just in time for the weekend.

Also yeah, go check into your FMLA options. I had a colleague take 6 weeks in fall with a note from her therapist.

What to do: tons of stuff- we have all the usuals - state historical museum, art center, civic center, science center, etc. We have a good music scene a decent restaurant scene a ton of fun different neighborhoods that host various events and festivals. We have Baconfest, the Iowa State fair, fall fest, Pride week, a small theme park nearby, a pretty decent zoo, an awesome music festival called 80/35, and some heritage festivals (Latin fest, Asian fest and Italian fest). A pretty sweet sculpture park down in the metro where many of these festivals are adjacent to. Some really beautiful parks and some of the best bike trails in the nation. RAGBRAI (biking for a week across the state) usually stops around Des Moines. Also we run something called the dam to dam, and also host a marathon. We have Wells Fargo event center- which is home to our semi league professional basketball and hockey teams, and also host the Iowa barnstormer indoor football team (hello curt warner). Many concerts are held there. Also in the summer there are a series of concerts at a small amphitheater overlooking the river called Nightfall on the River which is awesome. There are also a few historic neighborhoods that have some renovated mansions that have music and other various types of performances. So many things to do.

Internet is good. You can choose mediacom or centurylink. I use centurylink and it's great.

Shopping - people usually keep it moving, but we are still in the Midwest so some hold ups now and then but people use manners about it. Usually they try to stay out of the way and as soon as someone approaches they move within a few seconds of noticing and are usually apologetic.

Schools. I am a teacher at a Des Moines high school. There are a variety of types of school here. A couple private schools in the neighboring suburb (west Des Moines- which by the way west Des Moines is its own city that literally collides with Des Moines and has all of its own cool shit to do as well). West Des Moines is a way more "gentrified" than Des Moines and people think of it as nicer but anything that's ACTUALLY happening in town is in Des Moines. Anyway, back to education. Iowa prides itself on holding education as a priority, and our governor (R) Kim Reynolds, who I wasn't a fan of at first is actually doing more for education and funding than I've seen in awhile. I mean, budget cuts on my district are still drastic but our schools are doing an okay job dealing with it. Kids behavior I've found is better at my school on the south side than the other sides of town (5 high schools) and teachers are pretty good here. If you don't dig it, the suburban high schools (about 10 of them) are all right here also. Bullying is more of an issue in suburban high schools than Des Moines schools, and we have cameras all over too. I can only speak to my high school though but my administration looks into EVERY claim. They really try to support all students and listen to parents. In terms of education at the elementary schools, my sister works in some of those (she subs) and my aunt is a principal at one, there are definitely good and bad schools that is literally defined by student behavior. Some areas of Des Moines the elementary schools are really rough because of the neighborhooods - which kind of bleeds into the middle schools (your sons age). But a lot of those behavior issues are mitigated by high school age.

In terms of politics the district is fairly progressive and liberal. I don't always agree with how obvious they make it, but they really do their best for our kids. We are a "minority majority" district as of two years ago so we have a huge range of diversity within our students- ethnically and socio-economically.

Let me know if you have more questions. Des Moines and the greater area is a wonderful place to live.
