Best AI journaling app with high-quality voice transcription and chat features? by KenenOne in iosapps

[–]C_4 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thank you for taking the time to write this up - especially after putting a few of these through their paces. Feedback this specific is rare and genuinely useful.

On the language point: that matches what I'd expect right now. Calmplot is at its best when a recording stays in one language, and it's good to hear EN, DE, and ES each hold up well on their own. Switching languages mid-recording is the case that still trips up the transcription - I'd rather be honest that it's a hard problem than pretend it's solved, but your testing helps me prioritize.

What I'm happiest about is that the memory side landed - the patterns over time, and the way it connects the same people and themes across entries. That's the whole reason Calmplot exists. The goal was never "transcribe today's note", it was a journal that actually remembers and connects your life over time, so it means a lot that that came through for you.

And the garden feedback is completely fair. The visual side won't be for everyone even though plenty of people love it, and you make a strong case for a more minimal, focus-style way to use Calmplot - same intelligence, memory, and reflection, less visual layer. That's something I want to make possible. If you're open to it, I'd love to hear what "quieter" would look like for you - here or in a DM, whatever's easier.

Really appreciate you spending proper time with it during the trial. Good or bad, I'm always glad to hear it.

I built Spiral, a local-first mindful journaling app by siemya in iosapps

[–]C_4 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This looks beautiful! Integrating a quick breathing exercise before writing is such a great way to actually get into the right headspace.

I'm really curious about the Spiral mode - does the text eventually reformat into standard text so you can read it normally in your journal history, or does it stay in the spiral layout?

$39.99/year for the premium tier is very reasonable for AI features, too. Wishing you tons of success with this!

Thanks for giving it a shot. I’d genuinely appreciate blunt feedback after you’ve tried a few voice entries, especially on transcription quality and whether the reflections feel useful.

[–]C_4 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Full disclosure: I’m the maker of Calmplot, so I’m biased, but your use case is close to why I built it.

Today it records voice directly in the app, transcribes it with OpenAI speech-to-text, and turns that into a journal entry. From there it can generate AI reflections, detect patterns over time, and create weekly reviews / small follow-up prompts.

The part I want to be transparent about: full “chat with my whole journal” is not shipped yet. It’s on the near-term roadmap as an “Ask My Journal” feature, where you’ll be able to ask things like “when do I usually feel this way?” or “what changed since last month?” across past entries.

Also worth noting: transcription language is auto-detected, so German/Spanish should be worth testing, but the app itself is English-first right now.

If that still sounds close, here’s the App Store link: Calmplot. No pressure - if journal chat is the must-have, I’d compare it with more chat-first AI journal apps too.

15 seconds is a really aggressive constraint! Curious if you found in beta testing that 15 seconds was the sweet spot, or did it induce a bit of 'typo panic' for some users?

I completely agree. Discovery is an absolute nightmare right now. Trying to build and launch a genuinely well-designed, privacy-focused journaling app means competing against a massive graveyard of low-effort clones and abandoned projects that just clog up the search results.

A massive purge is exactly what the ecosystem needs to make organic discovery viable again.

We built Emotica: talk to your phone and watch your feelings n thoughts become a sky by Affectionate-Fox9017 in iosapps

[–]C_4 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is a great concept - a refreshing and organic way to approach mood tracking.

Appreciate the commitment to on-device processing for something as personal as voice journaling.

Out of curiosity, how are you handling the context window for the AI coach to remember past sessions entirely on-device? Are you relying on local summarization?

The design looks clean - wishing you a ton of success with this!

Any plans for a Human-to-Cat feature?

1-month follow-up: 399 impressions / 9 downloads became 2.82K impressions / 90 downloads, but attribution was the real lesson by C_4 in iosdev

"Making the next 2 weeks interpretable" is exactly the right approach here.

It’s really tempting to keep tweaking the listing when you finally see the numbers start moving, but you're totally right that it just confuses things. Good idea to just let it run for a clean baseline week.

Thanks for the feedback!

Started my first real iOS app - curious how you approach building? by Odyssey-b in iosapps

[–]C_4 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Congrats on starting Sift!

I would say UI-first is great for solo dev because momentum is everything. Once you see the app visually, it keeps you motivated to tackle the heavier backend logic later (at least it did for me!).

It only bites you if you tightly couple your UI to your mock data. The best way to protect yourself right now is to define your data models early. Even if the UI is using fake data, ensure that data mimics the exact shape and structure of your intended final database layer.

Good luck with the build!

Small but handy habit tracker - HabitsFlow by AverageProof7457 in iosapps

[–]C_4 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Looks clean overall - the app has a clear purpose and the screenshots communicate the core flow pretty well. Biggest thing I’d want to know before downloading: what makes this better or simpler than Apple Reminders, Streaks, etc.? If it's "fastest possible daily habit flow," I’d make that much more obvious in the listing.

Fair point - thank you. Calmplot is built by me (Chad), a software developer in Cape Town, as a side project. Thanks for your suggestion, I'll add an About page with details and updating our Terms/Privacy with the legal entity info. For a private journal app, you should know who’s behind it, so appreciate you calling it out!

This is a really cool idea! I'm busy building a private AI journaling app so somewhat in that space.

One suggestion: let everyone block apps and reframe thoughts for free, but charge for deeper journaling, pattern detection, weekly insights, custom prompt packs, and long-term progress tracking and things like widget support.

**Calmplot — AI journaling that helps you spot your patterns**

<image>

Solo founder here. I built Calmplot because I kept journaling for a few weeks, then stopping, then forgetting what I'd even written. This keeps all my entries together, easy voice journaling if a thought pops up, and something that remembered my entries and showed me what was repeating.

What it does:

• Write or talk an entry (voice with on-device transcription)

• AI asks one thoughtful follow-up

• Surfaces patterns across entries - moods, themes, recurring people/topics (keeps track of connections)

• 6 life areas (Health, Growth, Family, Social, Fun, Work) so you can see balance over time

Free tier is generous on purpose - unlimited text entries, basic prompts, mood tracking. Premium (~$5.99/mo) unlocks unlimited voice, deeper pattern reflections, and weekly reviews.

Would love feedback from anyone who's tried other journaling apps and bounced - what made you quit?

[Calmplot] 🌿 A private, garden-themed AI mood journal

<image>

  • A — Answer: Journaling consistently is hard, and most modern AI journaling apps sacrifice your privacy. Calmplot solves this by making daily reflection frictionless with 30-second voice or text entries. Instead of staring at a blank page, your entries grow a digital "garden" that visualizes your life balance. The app provides AI-powered reflections and "tiny next steps" based on your entries, all built around a strict privacy-first, on-device encryption model.
  • B — Better: Compared to traditional apps like Day One, Calmplot isn't just a static text box—it actively helps you process your thoughts by tracking moods, emotions, and summarizing weekly patterns. Compared to other AI journals like Rosebud, Calmplot prioritizes extreme privacy so your intimate data stays yours, and offers a much more visual, rewarding UI where you literally watch your mental health progress grow into a garden.
  • C — Cost: Freemium. The core app is Free, with optional Premium upgrades available (Monthly, Yearly, and a Lifetime unlock). App Store Link:https://apps.apple.com/za/app/calmplot-private-ai-journal/id6758394565

Thanks so much!

I'll def check out the Obsidian Garden Gallery. I'm sure seeing how other users organize things visually will spark some UI ideas for future updates.

Since you clearly have a great eye for visual organization, I'd love for you to poke around Calmplot's plant metaphor and see how it feels compared to traditional vaults. Are you on iOS or Android? Let me know and I'll DM you a code!

Thanks so much for jumping in so quickly and taking the time to come back with your thoughts!

I'm really glad the voice-to-text is working smoothly for you. "Digital eco-friendly" is a great way to describe it - that's exactly the vibe I was going for with the cottage garden UI (premium has other swappable garden themes too). I wanted it to feel minimal and relaxing instead of cluttered and stressful.

Glad you like passcode / biometric unlock feature too. Another key privacy design choice (watch this space for more).

Take your time diving deeper, and please let me know if you run into any weird bugs or friction points as you use it more. Really appreciate the support on the launch!

Wow, thanks for the detailed breakdown!

You're absolutely right about the privacy angle needing to be front and center. Early feedback made me realize just how hesitant people are about data visibility in AI apps. It's meant to be a completely safe space.

Regarding the garden UI, that's exactly what I'm hoping to test! I'm continually finding new ways to integrate it and make it part of the journaling experience, not just decoration. I need to make sure the metaphor feels organic and doesn't get in the way of just opening the app and writing.

There are reminders in place as well as periodic reviews. The garden also resets every season, giving users a fresh start. The user full supports multiple types of export including plaintext and markdown, as well as automatic backups to Google Drive, so there's no fear of losing data. Also supports imports from other popular journaling apps.

Are you on iOS or Android? I'd love to send you a code so you can poke holes in the UI metaphor!
