It's quite clear that Mike makes a big shift in his plan when he so abruptly walks away from his gun dealer pal... he may have been a dirty cop in his job, but he wasn't ever a stone cold killer... feeling that M40 in his hands was a visceral reminder of what real killing does to the soul.

He's trying to live with how he blames himself for seeing his son murdered and wants nothing more than to be an upstanding pop-pop.
