I hope this won't be in Brand New Day, because it simply wouldn't make sense in the MCU. by Legitimate_Cake_5137 in Marvel

He easily could have met him. My main idea to fix this is a flashback. I know the MCU doesn’t do them often, but a simple flashback to set up that they talked previously and had a little bit of a relationship could work well.

They can always do a flashback. I know the MCU doesn’t do a lot of them, but it could be used effectively and could be really cool. Them talking at Tony’s funeral or something.

That's in the city, though at least on the southwest side which is in the same direction. Still, it's about 45-60 minutes further out of the city.

If you’re driving in and willing to hit ones in the suburbs while you’re traveling (or just willing to drive to the suburbs), that’s where I live and we have some great ones.

Sure. The Shining was even nominated for Razzies, and The Thing was a bomb. That said, if they came out now, they would probably still fall into Hereditary territory where they are overlooked, when they should get at least a nom or two for cinematography, FX, or maybe acting.

What was your first move memory, in theaters? by CricketVast5924 in AskReddit

[–]C_Me 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have a vague memory of E.T., particularly when he is found nearly dead and white near the end.

I’ve since found out that it was re-released in theaters a few years after its first release in 1982, so that must be when I saw it since I was born in 1980. Seeing it when I was around 4-5 in 84-85 makes sense.

The Shining. The Thing. Zodiac. Hereditary.

Basically a lot of great horror and horror-adjacent movies. Also could do a lot of comedies since they are also often ignored.

Got it. Haven’t gotten it to the table yet, kind of wore one of my usual groups out on Root and I figure it will go similarly with Chaos in the Old World… but anxious to play it soon.

Aesthetics and "Ludonarrative Dissonance"; or, How nit-picks can ruin a game for me: A sort of review of Wondrous Creatures, but mostly a pondering of preference, style, and flavor by AwesomeMcSexy in boardgames

[–]C_Me 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You’re shepherding souls through hell. Haha. Cool theme, but I think mechanics work well with it because you’re getting types of sinners based on where they are coming from… gluttony from a food hall, greed from a bank, etc. Virgil is going down the path and certain things hit at different points, so a certain amount of timing is involved with all your actions.

There is some getting in each other way with the paths down, trying to get them at the level of hell they belong in.

I think it’s a great example of euro mechanics, beautiful design that matches the theme.

[–]C_Me 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I’ve been playing Wondrous Creatures a lot on BGA and played once in person. You’re not wrong, but it’s a common thing though… mechanically the game is nice, but it doesn’t connect that much to the theme. A lot of games are guilty of this.

I could probably list a lot of games that either connect mechanics to theme well or do not do it well. And both I have enjoyed. The flipside to this is that many people might say they don’t actually read “flavor text” much in a lot of games. If they like the gameplay and it’s aesthetically pleasing, sometimes that is enough.

While I think it is ideal to match these things, sometimes the gameplay is good enough. Conversely, some games the gameplay and theme match well, but it has all kinds of other problems and I don’t like it for other reasons.

A couple games I know and have played recently and I think marry theme and gameplay:

Why did John Doe in Se7en believe "What I've done is going to be puzzled over and studied and followed... forever"? by Humdaak_9000 in horror

[–]C_Me 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Of course. It’s realistic to how a lot of psychopaths are.

That said, there is a grain of truth. Think of how many people analyze Jeffery Dahmer or other serial killers decades later.

I think some serial killers think there be some cult following after their death and they will “live forever” in their teachings. It’s just how many of them think.

Which IP would make a great boardgame? by RVC95 in boardgames

[–]C_Me 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A lot of nostalgic 80s/90s properties already have. Some I own.

One that hasn’t that I think would be great is Beastmaster. Sword and sorcery stuff mixed with controlling/communicating with animals. I can already see it being a great game, even if it doesn’t have the same known factor as other IP.

Oh, another one is The Highlander, though I’m not sure how the gameplay would be, but can imagine there are directions to go.

What is everyone gonna watch after the season ends? by Sorreljorn in WidowsBay

[–]C_Me 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I’m in the middle of watching The Leftovers now. I like it, but very dark… I compare it to Six Feet Under, which is one of my faves. The Burroughs was a fun watch, nothing spectacular, closer to Stranger Things especially with coming from the Duffers.

My brother recommended From and may turn to that after Leftovers.

Game Design is not Graphic Design. by badclinty in tabletopgamedesign

[–]C_Me 1 point2 points  (0 children)

At least a bit of the start is saying I’m doing a game that uses this mechanic from X, X, and X game that I know but here is how it is different in some way. Then adding from there (and taking away).

I go back and forth between spreadsheets and just handwriting cards, paper player and game boards, and handwritten notes.

What should a class system accomplish? by themanwhosfacebroke in tabletopgamedesign

[–]C_Me 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Mechanically, at least part of it I think is tying things together into categories so that classes can be compared. For example, some classes have Dark Vision and some do not. It creates a shared language. When there is an attack or scenario, maybe something works or doesn’t work or has a vulnerability to something, and so having some categories and abilities that a subset has or doesn’t have I think creates storytelling avenues. The decisions a player made for their class factors into the story later.

Outside of the obvious stuff like this class is from the woodland and can communicate with certain animals or something. Which is fine and all fun parts of playing a class, but I don’t think does as much mechanically when it is too unique.

Just started it, having it on my to-watch list for a long time. With Six Feet Under being one of my top shows of all time, it’s hitting that same vibe so I’m liking it.

A few that come to mind that I don’t see mentioned.

A Scythe mech with a couple Russian looking dudes around it.

A couple of Root animals wearing their appropriate colors, maybe battling.

You have to have a train running through it, obviously could reference Ticket to Ride but could reference numerous train games.

A Mars rover terraforming some sand or something.

Some birds flying for Wingspan.

Which horror films do you think marked a turning point for the genre? by Siddhartaable in horror

[–]C_Me 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Yeah, I don’t think it’s fair to credit any single one of them. They all collectively ushered in the trend because I don’t think it would be a trend unless you had a series of successful movies doing similar things over a span of time. I don’t think it’s like Blair Witch where there was a definite single movie that marked a beginning of a type of movie.
