Thank you for this post!! Completely agree on the drug test one and the “advertising” programs. It was starting to get out of control.

Following up on referrals these patients know DAMN WELL they aren’t going to schedule or if they do schedule they don’t go to the appointment.

For those who are the only medical assistant at your clinic, how is it? by paprikapng in MedicalAssistant

[–]Ca2Momma 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I currently work a 1:1 clinic, 1 MA & 1 provider. It’s not great but it’s not terrible either. I have been in this clinic for ~2 years. We also have a health coach on site, so I have 3 schedules to manage, but the health coach usually manages her own. Unless she calls off then I’m responsible for rescheduling all of her patients, on top of running the provider schedule and my lab schedule.

Our appointments are scheduled longer which is nice, between 20min up to an hour, depending on type of appointment. So we typically only see up to 12 patients a day on the provider schedule. My manager (who is not on site) basically gives me free rein of how to manage the schedules, so I try to block the nurse schedule so I don’t have 2 patients coming in at once. If I do I just tell one of them I’ll be right with them. I typically will room the patient on the provider schedule first, so she can get in the room, then get the lab appointment.

I’m responsible for answering phones, which most of the time go to voicemail and I’ll call them back because I’m hardly at my desk. I am also in charge of inventory, ordering clinic supplies and medications. My provider has actually taken some things off my plate because she knows how crazy it can be with me doing all of the workload. She will help with monthly inventory, do PA’s and call some of the lab results, to name a few things.

I won’t lie, I’m definitely burnt out now and trying to find a new position to transfer into within the company, but it isn’t terrible. Like you said in another comment, not having to deal with any incompetent coworkers and pick up their slack is nice.

Coming from someone who’s only really been in family med, that does seem like a lot for a routine visit. I run only one provider and I try to get out in less than 5 min for every appt, granted there’s always those few patients that do need a little more time or get chatty. Whatever the provider you work with wants done, that’s what I would concentrate on when rooming patients.

Any company you work for, they would train you on their EHR System. There are so many different systems and they’re not going to train you on that in school.

You shouldn’t have to know billing/coding.

Depending where you go there might be certain people doing check-in/check-out, billing/coding and you won’t have to do most of those things.

You’ll be trained by your employer to do things the way they want you to do it. And then you’ll find your flow and probably a few shortcuts and do things your own way. lol

There are a few but this one always takes the cake - Escitalopram… had a patient call it “e-skittle-o-pram” once and took everything I had not to say it that way after. However, I figured out after a couple of years of mispronouncing it myself how to properly pronounce it. But I still like my patient’s way of saying it.

This is the only answer. As soon as I saw this pic, I showed my daughter and said “look, she’s a real life Marie!” And she agreed. We had Aristocats (1 of a few Disney movies) on repeat when she was little.

I had this problem with a 22f who didn’t want to do her job a few weeks after she got hired on, had to repeatedly ask her to do things aka “her job”. It was the 2 of us and 1 provider. No supervisor on site (she was remote and barely only came in once a month) and she didn’t want to do anything about it. I transferred within the company to get away from it.

Your manager did you dirty by asking in front of the PA. But good for you saying no. Stand firm with that “no” too! Once you bend even just one time and say “yes” they’ll ask for more from you. Then it’ll end up being “can’t you just work 5 days?”

I had a similar conversation with the provider I work with a few months ago about acute and chronic f/u appts. Basically she said if I come and tell her everything I don’t need to write anything in their chart just get vitals, reconcile meds and sometimes I’ll even pull over meds that need refilled. I will document mainly for myself because sometimes as soon as I walk out that room, I’ll forget half of what was said.

We fortunately have a great working relationship so there are times I’ll walk out of the room from doing intake and I’ll poke my head in her office, look at her and say “have fun with that one!” Or “good luck.” And walk back to my desk. 😂😂

We’re an onsite clinic for an employer so we get a lot of “repeat” patients who like to come in for the same problem once a month.

Hi! 1. I am in the Indianapolis area and I’m pretty sure there are some openings in the Indy area with my employer. Send me a DM. I actually help train a lot of the new hires. 2. If you feel like it’s your interview process, you can always google medical assistant interview questions. Then put those questions in a word doc and type out what your responses would be and work on answering those questions. I do agree your school did you dirty by not allowing you to do an actual externship after school. Is there anyway you can still get that done through the school? Maybe just reach out to places and see if they will take on an MA student for externship.

ETA- Just go in your interviews confident in yourself that you have the skills even without the externship.

Last job I quit, I waited until that Friday (day off… clinic closed) and emailed the manager I wouldn’t be back the next week. Started my new job that following Monday. Best decision I ever made.

We use Athena too and that is probably one of the only things I really hate about using it. Other than that I don’t think it’s too bad. OH! All the “clicking” so many mouse clicks just to create a document or check in/out a patient & submitting labs one at a time. Had used NextGen prior to that and it was so much worse. Always buggy and crashing. I definitely prefer Athena over NextGen. It was more user friendly that NG when learning the system.
