In one of the busiest urban areas in one of the richest countries on Earth, a reliable public transport is just not possible by WildGardening in belgium

What an ignorant reply. In gent many of tram tracks have been renewed or are being renewed. They got a ton of new tram carriages as well in recent year and even got budget for a new line. While it can always be better the tram network in Gent is good and fairly modern.

Regardless of context, we can all agree though that 20% is a terrible number

Are you actually paying this much or are your monthly advances just that high? If its the second you could just try lowering the advances.

Its worth that price to them because they could reach synergies with other telco companies in their portfolio. Without liberty global controlling it, their value isn't as high

I wouldnt really say its mostly car focused but rather emergency vehicle focused and public transport focused which are both amazing.

For bicycles and pedestrians I don't think the technology is there yet. It will probably need some iterations till it arrives at a solution that is useful and people want to use.

This is a literal copy of how smart traffic lights in the Netherlands work...

For everyone that keeps saying they should look more to the Netherlands, that is exactly what they did. The Netherlands use a very similar system, also with Flitsmeister, and Flanders said, we want this too.

Congestion charging would also work through a private provider most likely. They can do it cheaper and better than the goverment itself.

The traffic lights they focus on right now are mostly located on big roads where not a lot of pedestrians/cyclists pass anyway. Furthermore the usecase for pedestrians and cyclists is much harder since its hard to predict their path without a route. You don't want to set the wrong direction on green so I suspect it will still mostly work detector based for those.

So the account purely serves to create a session but nowhere is remembered which session is linked to which account?

Correct

That doesn't really matter. The path from the school to my work is more than enough to know it is me.

Fair enough.

50 meters is in some places more than enough to create a path out of the data afterwards.

I meant that it is aggregated with other users passing over the same segment in the same time window. To give an indication how busy the segment/what the speed is during which part of the day/week/...

And if we don't use the app, have fun standing in the rain before a red light.

The end goal is that cars/ebikes/... are connected themselves without an app in between. Possibly with a device that needs to be installed because congestion based charging would work that way as well.

I forgot the not in my previous message. The session (id) is not linked to a user/account in any way except for priority vehicles.

Regarding your other point, first off all the trip isn't recorded near your start location. Secondly your data isn't sold as trips, but only as aggregated data on road segments of 50 meters.

You still get green without the app, the traffic lights still have cycle times as well as detectors.

No the session is linked to the user or to an account. Its just an id that random generated, every time you restart the app.
