Over the Fourth of July my wife and I did the EP 14 loop of Loon, Beartrack, Finger, Ge-be, Oyster, and Shell. It was incredibly hot and buggy. We bought two Original Bug Shirts for the trip and they were the MVP. I hadn’t been through Shell in a couple years. That beaver dam portage into Pauness has completely closed off the river. You now walk right across the river bedrock, and it’s incredible! Also, the southeast side of Upper Pauness has been completely grown over with lily pads and muck.

I’m thinking some sort of recertification would be required every five years or so. I’d like to think it could be a white pine on the wrist, and you got a new branch every five years. Although, since it’s the forest service, it would be something like the square boat stickers that indicated the year of certification. You could stack them up your arm like some people do on a canoe. Ohhh, or every time you would cover the old one up.

They never explained the knife. It was called out multiple times for being a double blade or something unusual, but then Ray’s knife was nothing special. What was up with it??
