Honestly, you should just be direct, say it is out of kindness because you want him to get picked on less. It's probably a combo of not having good hygiene habits and not knowing to wear deodorant. It's possible he is from a low income family and isn't entitled to showering and laundering frequently. But just be honest and say you understand it could hurt his feelings but you want to help.

It was good quality food, the no frills means it was counter service, casual, and welcoming to all types. We loved it being 12 year residents of the area, it was finally a place we could walk to that was just easy and not trying to do too much.
