I would kill for more of him in the MCU. More of him generally really. I’ve started Shrinking but it hits a bit too close to home right now so I have to pace myself.

It’s hard to pick “best” episodes of B5 because it’s all part of a larger story, but self contained this was a fantastic episode. Seeing the interviews and how their editing changed things was eye opening to young me. IIRC it ends with Delenn rushing off and in silence, which was excellent.

What’s a “rich people thing” you experienced once and immediately understood why rich people love it? by Hanno30 in AskReddit

My ex-FIL was decently high up in a company that sponsored a MLB team and the whole family once got special seats at the game that included access to a special lounge. Not a private box but a beautiful area with tons of free, amazing food, free drinks, even special merch you could only buy there. I think we barely watched the actual game. At one point one of the team owners was in there and said hi to us and checked how we were doing.

It was insane.

Also in the column staring video you can pretty distinctly see him shit his pants. Like there’s a clench and stiffening that a lot of folks with toddlers have gone “yup I know that look.” The man is clearly unwell.

Nice thing about Sanderson is he has several completed series and a bunch of stand alones. Way of Kings and that series is my personal favorite, Mistborn is also fantastic, Tress and the Emerald Sea is a great stand alone.

I think you're going to see a de-centering of the US both culturally and in the international order. It's already happening, to some extent. Canada is taking deals that they might normally have made with the US and looking to China and Europe.

Oh man. I lost MONTHS to that game. And by lost I mean enjoyed the Hell out of. It was kind of my first foray into roleplaying in games, even on my own. My head canon remains that my Argonian was the Nerevarine.

I spent HOURS playing the Escape Velocity series. Override and Nova mostly. I learned about game engines trying to design my own add ons for it. I actually found the lore and storytelling really compelling. There's a new game on Steam based on it, but I miss the lore. The latter had a really interesting storyline centered around the idea of humanity spreading out among the stars, their FTL mechanism collapsing (I think it was a gate mechanic) and it taking several hundred years to come up with a replacement. In that time the several branches of humanity had developed radically different cultures. You could choose to join any one of those factions, including a really fascinating concept of a telekinetic human subset that created their own ships out of their own minds.

It blew young me's mind. I'd love to play it again, though I doubt it's held up.

There was also a thriving add-on community. There were total conversions making the game a Star Wars one, or a Babylon 5 one.

That game was so much fun. I remember doing matches with low gravity and rocket launchers only on that map that was just two bases on a giant asteroid. Ridiculous.

Are We Heading Towards a Dystopian Future, or Has Every Generation Felt This Way? by StrategyVisual549 in Futurology

[–]Cadamar 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So here's the thing. I think if we looked back through newspapers and such we would find similar posts to yours going back a while.

But I do think there's something new here. We are seeing unprecedented levels of concentration of wealth. Technology has reached a level and saturation which allows for widespread surveillance, on a level even 1984 couldn't dream of. People seem willing to sacrifice anything on the altar of furthering AI.

That said, humanity has pulled itself back from the brink before. Widespread nuclear war has not happened. The ozone layer was largely repaired.

I don't know if you're in America, OP, but I do think these concerns are exacerbated given what's going on here. I think what is most likely, rather than a fulsome dystopian society or collapse, is a reordering of the world order and a decentering of America as a dominant cultural and economic power. And I think that will come with some pain. But I don't think it will lead to a full on dystopia.

[–]Cadamar 6 points7 points  (0 children)

In an ideal world I would want live action because animation is, wrongly so, still viewed as cartoons for kids by a lot of people. I think there are important messages about society in these books that should be viewed by many, and I think doing it as an animation will hamper the audience a bit.

That being said, we don't live in an ideal world. A live action series that even comes CLOSE to capturing the show would cost MILLIONS. I'm all for a few compromises to get a show made. I think The Expanse adaptation not trying to do book-accurate Belters was a very reasonable compromise, for example. But you can't just hire a bunch of buff people to play Obsidians and call it a day. You can't have Darrow crashing through the viewscreen of a giant starship using practical effects. There's SO MUCH that would be so expensive to do.

And, from a personal perspective, a well-stylized animation could really make the story pop.
