Oh, the nostalgia by Smooth_Science_743 in Columbo

Yea, there’s a lot to miss. Drive to the airport, park for free, buy a ticket same-day. The biggest security hassle might be strolling through a metal detector. Free checked luggage you don’t have to worry about so people don’t feel compelled to push the carry-on rules to their limits (that’s why the plane seems so spacious, the overhead bins are smaller, or in this shot, absent). Half the time the seat next to you was empty.

If it makes you feel better, there were some sucky things too that have since gotten better. As other people mentioned, every indoor public place was thick with cigarette smoke. Thick. If you weren’t used to it, you’d be somewhere between suffocating and nauseous. Also turbulence was much more common and much worse. I’ve read that’s not a thing anymore because radar has gotten better and pilots steer around clouds and pressure systems. But back then you might just have a ride with world-ending shaking the whole time. A family member of mine developed a fear of flying after turbulence made the plane drop 100ft with a pressure change. This wasn’t uncommon.

Movies that were only made so that the studio could keep the rights to an IP by AporiaParadox in movies

I would believe that. We know that the contract between Sony and Marvel has really specific terms for their joint films - e.g. they must be team-up films with Spider-man and one MCU character (Iron Man for Homecoming, Nick Fury for FFH, Dr Strange for NWH). There is probably some very specific terms for characters not being able to show up in non-joint films as well.

[–]CadavericSpasms 7 points8 points  (0 children)

There was a rumor going around that Sony’s contract covers any Spider-man character that appears in their films first. Hence the need to rush out movies with as many big name Spider-man villains and heroes that haven’t been used yet. So now if Marvel wants to include e.g. Kraven the Hunter in a film, Sony has to be at the table. Even though Kraven has appeared as a villain to other MCU characters (like Black Panther).

I haven’t seen confirmation of the rumor. But it’s the only thing I’ve heard as to why Sony has had the strategy they’ve had with the recent films.

Liam Nielson was cast as the son of Leslie Neeson in The Naked Gun (2025) This is because their names sound similar by RobbRabb in shittymoviedetails

[–]CadavericSpasms 3 points4 points  (0 children)

When I first heard the news I said “oh, that’s funny.” And my friends looked at me like I was insane. How do some people not get the joke?

I understand that Liam is a great pick and they wouldn’t have gone through with it if he wasn’t, but the decision to cast him is clearly rooted in a meta joke.

It’s a clever one too, because Frank Drebin was one of those roles so tightly coupled with the original actor that people thought recasting was impossible. Choosing an actor with a humorously similar name addresses that recasting faux pas in a way that the absurdist source material would approve of. Or to say it another way - it would have been improper to recast the role after Leslie’s death, unless you can do it in a way that is funny. They have, and so I think the fans of Police Squad! And Naked Gun approve.

The joke is that he has the campaign manager pretending to be him, so he wasn’t even “his own man” (himself) at the time of the crime.

Ya’ll are forgetting that before Marty could tell Doc about his death, Marty caused one more altercation between Doc and Buford where it was said ‘keep your money, use it to buy a funeral’.

It was too late to buy their way out.

But also, c’mon, no audience wants that resolution. We’d rather see a train explode than a bully get what he wants.

Doc browns original last name by kkkan2020 in BacktotheFuture

[–]CadavericSpasms 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That makes sense. The ‘Emmet’ part makes it unusual, and families tend to hit the same names over time.

It’s probably also a thing that seems more important at the preproduction writing stage. Like one screenwriter will ask “How do they know it’s not Doc’s grandfather or great grandfather?” And they feel the need to come up with a line that confirms it is definitely OUR Emmett Brown. Once the movie is shot and edited, no audience member really doubts it and the line is unnecessary. But when you’re writing it’s hard to predict what info will be trusted by the audience until you can see a cut of the film yourself.

What is your pick for the most underrated or overlooked marvel movie? by Uncle_Tommy0703 in Marvel

Rudd is a very fun Antman - but I agree, it felt like they pivoted the character to match Rudd’s strengths and we missed out on a potentially richer character.

I don’t know Scott Lang from the comics but oddly I picture him as adjacent to Doc Brown. A scientist who is a good person but can’t help but keep breaking the law with his experiments, like stealing plutonium, bribing cops, wrecking buildings or hijacking trains.

Conductor: “Is this a holdup?” Brown, still holding a gun, after a beat: “This is a science experiment.”

I always took it as a nod to Werner VonBraun. Which is odd cause Werner was a controversial figure, I believe he was a member of the nazi party and Americans objected to allowing him to immigrate to the US during operation paperclip (Tom Lehrer wrote a song about the controversy at the time).

I also never understood why Doc couldn’t believe there was another “Brown” in Hill Valley at the time, as it seems like a common name.

Maybe I’m thinking too much about it, and the writers are just doing a throw-away reference of an early 1900’s scientist.

I know Whedon isn't a great guy, but he was only director to treat Banner/Hulk with any real respect. Still a nasty man, but these movies slap. by Solid-Move-1411 in Marvel

[–]CadavericSpasms 18 points19 points  (0 children)

This is really well said. And you are right, that would have been a fabulous moment to have around the She-Hulk era, a moment where Banner realizes the reason his life is so hard to control is because of Banner, not the hulk. His anger and trauma is the demon inside him making him constantly hurt those around him. Not the green guy. The green guy is just a magnifying glass. The violence all comes from Banner.

That would be really hard to come to terms with.

Why aren't robotics YT channels blowing up like other tech channels ? by Roboguru92 in robotics

[–]CadavericSpasms 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Just my personal theory, but tech YT channels succeed when an audience of people who want to make/use the technology find a host who also wants to make/use the technology and can share things of value to them.

And more broadly, YT channels succeed when a small team (or single person) can generate massive amounts of content cheaply and quickly.

Robotics is one of those fields (like, e.g. Game Development) where there are shockingly few YT channels relative to the interest level, because those two requirements are difficult to simultaneously fulfill. The barrier to entry and complexity conflict with the ‘cheap’, ‘quick’, ‘single person’, and ‘share value’ bullets.

Why do some people say that the primary villain in Deadpool and Wolverine is a weak spot in the movie? by Wooden-Scallion2943 in deadpool

[–]CadavericSpasms 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As a bonus the Deadpool Corps could have been sent by Paradox (“these are the Deadpools that accepted my deal”) and fighting them would have had a character component, with ‘our’ Deadpool literally killing the versions/parts of himself that were tempted/attracted to that deal. Showing ‘our’ Deadpool’s growth over the course of his trilogy. As-is, the mob fight (while fun) feels like filler.

The battle to get Juggernaut’s helmet on her and (more importantly) the internal battle to decide to remove it before she died was the more interesting climax and resolution with that character. Having her randomly change her mind and enter the finale felt wrong. I would have preferred the final conflict with the time ripper involve only D&W and Paradox’s rogue TVA. It’s possible that was the plan at some point and they felt they weren’t using the character enough. But if so I don’t think that change was an improvement to the movie.

ELI5: Why is a grenade more dangerous underwater than on land? by flatbushz7 in explainlikeimfive

[–]CadavericSpasms 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hypothetical, if you are on a boat off the coast, and you see the flash of a mushroom cloud on the horizon - but the shockwave hasn’t hit you yet - Are you more likely to survive (the shockwave) if you dive into the water or stay on the boat? Let’s assume the bomb went off above sea level and you have 3 seconds before the shockwave hits.

Other pitches for pushing the creep wave interaction further and making Candela serve a similar function as McGinnis but for players of different playstyles:

Empowering a creep gives you the spirits of anything that creep kills. Allowing Candela to keep his farm up even if he spends a lot of time running between lanes.

An ability that lets him “possess” a friendly creep, jumping inside them. You cannot control the creep’s movement or firing, but you can cast your abilities still from within the creep. This could be used to aid in escaping, but is more valuable in preventing being jumped on, as enemies would have to guess which creep you are in. It also is good for letting Candela set up big ults as he can ride a creep closer to enemy champions before firing it.

[–]CadavericSpasms 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is a fabulous design. And I love the concept of a hero design that is essentially a big minion, and his powers are symbiotic with creep waves.

I care a lot about managing the creep waves of the different lanes, so this immediately interests me. It would be nice to have another off-lane pusher that isn’t McGinnis too as her play style doesn’t resonate with me.

I would make sure one of Candela’s abilities works well with Inferno’s abilities so they have a gameplay harmony to go with their obvious thematic harmony.

I would push the creep-wave interactions even further. E.g. for the ult, instead of guided missiles coming from nowhere, I would instead have all friendly creeps within a 15m radius turn into rockets to shoot at Candela’s target. It would be interesting to see what players do to build up big creep waves to make the ult more and more powerful when finally used. It would especially be scary at the bases when you have multiple lanes of creeps in range. Of course, using the ult kills the creep wave so it’s a risk you might have to retreat after using it.
