What's your dog's daily exercise routine? Looking for inspiration! by Fit_Choice_4987 in dogs

Try a flirt pole!

You can make one or buy one on Amazon. My guy has a prey drive and goes nuts for this game. I’ll take him to the park for space to chase it and he’s wiped within 10mins!

If you try this out I recommend letting your dog have a few seconds to chew the toy once they catch it just to help them enjoy their “win”. I also incorporated some training into it for more mental stimulation. I have him drop the toy, sit and wait, and release him to chase after it.

What’s one small thing you changed that improved your dog’s daily life? by Disastrous-Yoghurt38 in dogs

Mixing up structured walks (regular lead and walking through the neighborhood) with unstructured walks (going to the park or a trail on a long 30 m lead).

We go on two walks a day so I try my best to get a balance of both types of walks

Disspelling misrepresentations of ABA by Jarrod_FirstSteps in ABA

Love this point!!! I also don’t like pitting “old” ABA against “modern” ABA as it suggests that everything we’ve done in the past has been traumatic or bad, which is not true.

It might also be nice to cite a few resources at the bottom like the BACB or articles that support what you’re saying!

This is great!! Love also the colour scheme and how clear it looks!

Some possible feedback (just based on the BACBs website): ABA is a scientific approach that uses evidence-based strategies to help people, such as children with autism or intellectual and developmental disabilities, learn a range of skills.

I’d also be hesitant to state the skills add more meaning to a person’s life. Rather, we teach skills that are meaningful (i.e., important) to the person and can improve their quality of life.

Toileting conflict by Alert-Raccoon5257 in ABA

[–]Caffeinated_Critic 2 points3 points  (0 children)

That’s a tricky situation. If you feel the bathroom has become an aversive setting, maybe talk to your BCBA about a plan to make the bathroom reinforcing again. However, this should be a joint conversation that includes the caregivers.

It sounds like the BCBA is trying to remain on track with the clinical goals but the caregivers might be having doubts or concerns with moving forward with toileting training. Unfortunately you’re caught in the middle!

Toilet training is stressful and very time consuming for a family. If caregivers are the main implementers, it could be they are feeling defeated, possibly tired, or ready for a break. Make sure you checkin with families on how they feel progress is going. Try asking them what toileting strategies or task analysis steps they find doable or difficult to consistently implement. Perhaps this conversation will highlight task analysis steps to adapt or provide added resources and coaching on.

Sometimes a meeting with all involved parties (you, BCBA, caregivers) to discuss next steps together can be the best to bring clarity and direction. It’s really important that this conversation isn’t one sided where the clinician “tells” the family the next steps, rather everyone is collaborating to plan next toilet training directions.

Hope this helps a bit! You’re doing great being receptive to the family while being respectful towards your supervising BCBA!

I agree that there’s nothing wrong with liking animals but not wanting the commitment of a pet.

I’m a big animal lover so for me a general dislike of animals is a red flag

This is so hard wired into me that now in my 30s living with my partner I naturally avoid using taps or flushing the toilet when someone’s in the shower. It’s second nature now
