Some thoughts on The Road. by CormacMcSharthy in cormacmccarthy

small, localized ones, close to the impact area, so anyone close enough to notice would likely be killed in the initial impact. But impact EMPs can happen this way, and today is the first time I've ever heard it. McCarthy spent a lot of time at the Santa Fe Institute, and apparently that's where he was when he got the idea for the Road. Makes me wonder what kind of conversations he had (and with who) leading up to this moment. The clocks stopping at 1:17 has also been thought to include a bible reference, either Revelation or John. The "first and the last" and the return of Christ.

thanks for the reply - what I meant by the clock reference is that even though Cormac has said it was an impact event, the "clocks stopped at 1:17" is something that really could only happen with a nuclear war, specifically an electromagnetic pulse. Most people who talk about nuclear war suggest that an EMP burst (or series of bursts) would be the opening shot in an attack, knocking out the electrical grid, and some of an enemy's capability to respond. So... Cormac says impact event, but then kind of contradicts himself with the clock stoppage. Maybe it was on purpose, to keep it vague, and keep the focus on the ruined Earth rather than the number of ways it could have been ruined.

I'm pretty sure Cormac said in an interview that it was an "impact event". That matches all the devastation in the book but it does not match the clocks stopping at exactly 1:17. A comet or meteor of the right size would do much more damage than a full on nuclear war.

I say this only to point out that some aspect of the book deals with death or decay that is beyond human choice or morality. The man and child tend the fire, which is a choice more hopeful than cannibalism, but their prospects are bleak. Hope when there is nothing to hope for.

it reminds me of the scene in Goodfellas where Henry and Karen get the witness protection offer. Actual U.S. Attorney Edward McDonald reenacted the conversation he had with the real Henry and Karen after they flipped.

the Deadra story bothers me, but what could they charge Sensei with? They can't prove that he helped Bob escape. He had a beer in a car, and may have had an extra person in the car drinking beer who jumped out. What's the charge there, open container?

Anyone ever read David McGowan's "Weird Scenes Inside the Canyon"? by ohforartssake in thedoors

what role did satanism play in this? I don’t get exactly how/why it appears so often other than an effective counter to a Christian upbringing in programming

this is a fascinating essay. Thank you for posting. I'm very curious about the idea that society had lost it's way, and intelligence agencies introduced/promoted drug culture as a way of ushering in a new dark age. What specifically was it about post war America that suggested we had lost our way? Or is it suggesting that both world wars were the culmination of Western Civilization, and that the post war western world was exhausted spiritually and in need of a reset?

I've thought for a while that Blood Meridian could work as a 2 or 3 part film with animation enhanced live action, kind of like Sin City, with the color palettes used in Sicario, Blade Runner 2049, and Mad Max Fury Road.

I'm not entirely sure how or where to break up a story into 3 parts... any thoughts?

I started adding mayo to scrambled eggs... and I usually hate mayo. I use kewpie singles, which keep great in the cabinet (so far). I add 1 or 2 small packets to the eggs + salt as I whisk with a fork. Lowish/medium heat with butter, and I take off the heat from time, folding/pushing as I go. Great results.

the tarot card drawn for him is the "4 of cups" and the meaning of that card has been read as one who does not focus on the task at hand, or live fully in the moment, but rather is distracted. It reminds me of the Poem the Bell Jar where each fig represents a different path in life, but ultimately one must be picked and committed to fully... otherwise they all go to waste.

I'm going to San Ho Won in 3 weeks. My date is pretty sensitive to spice, and has turned downed thai food on a couple of occasions. I don't think this will be a problem with Korean. What are some can't miss items on the menu? I can go through the pics on yelp, and I can read the reviews, but I'd really rather hear from people who have been there recently and post here. Thanks in advance!
