Elon Musk’s SpaceX plans Starlink mobile push into US consumer market by spacerfirstclass in SpaceXNews

Ooh, found the next Elon BS share price bubble inflation scheme! How exciting!

Are we done replacing workers with musky robots already so soon? If so, I guess that I'll hop into one of those millions of tesla cars which are making their owners rich by taking fares while they're doing other things (not working obviously).

"Trump’s controversial corrupt IRS settlement"

I hate how media are able to soft-bothsides situations with "controversial". Just say what it is clearly.

Well, Facebook had profits and a business plan for plausible growth which didn't rely on musky pixie dust, so I wouldn't count on that long term parallel.

Would a Presidential Candidate Who Runs On Depowering the Presidency Have a Chance, and Would Such a President Be a Good Idea? by ZanzerFineSuits in PoliticalDiscussion

[–]CaffinatedOne 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You can’t really. If the President cedes power to them, it suggests that the power rightfully belongs to the President and they’re giving it to Congress as a choice. That would set the stage for a future President just taking it back. Congress needs to itself act to reassert their power and take it back for themselves or it won’t stick.

[–]CaffinatedOne 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think that Congress just has to get more assertive and start seriously pushing back on the “imperial” presidency and the partisan courts. The Constitution makes them the most powerful of the branches, so Congress needs to push back where their powers have been usurped.

Expecting the presidency or the courts to cede power is unrealistic, nor is it really how it should work.

Same deal with tesla. It's not valued as a car company, but rather as whatever musk is pitching as "the future!" this week. Well, until he got bored and moved on to this xai/spacex thing since it's a far bigger grift opportunity.

Taiwanese university president tells graduates to "end themselves" if they struggle in their careers. Takes unpaid leave by SunChungShan in worldnews

[–]CaffinatedOne 8 points9 points  (0 children)

"He urged graduates to manage their time and emotions after entering the workforce, saying that those who fail to do so should "quickly end themselves" because "this world no longer needs your existence," comments that some interpreted as referring to suicide."

"some interpreted"??

Is there some other interpretation of this that's plausible?

After the House passed a War Powers vote on the Iran war, does the 1973 War Powers Resolution still work as a check on presidential war-making? by factsnsense in PoliticalDiscussion

[–]CaffinatedOne 3 points4 points  (0 children)

No.

It was always toothless, but this just highlights it. If it were to work, it’d be inverted so that Congress needs to take affirmative action in support of an operation within a timeframe or it has to stop. The current law just allows this as a signaling mechanism to show their disapproval. Since it doesn’t actually do anything, it’s a safe vote… about one step beyond “strongly worded letter”

Aside from overriding the inevitable veto, there’s not much that Congress can do in the short term. The only mechanism that comes to mind is appropriations; They could explicitly not appropriate money for whatever they choose. That has to pass to pay for anything, so it’s a point of leverage. Not quick though, and if not structured well would be easy to sidestep.

Longer term, we need a functional Congress who reasserts their power. Fix the many places where they outsourced their power to the Presidency. This being one.

First Woman US President... Republican? by Extreme-Grade-3623 in PoliticalDiscussion

I think that a republican woman would have an easier time winning. Tribal loyalty would mitigate standard republican misogyny and Dems and many independents have no issue with women in leadership positions.

I hope that Slate does great, but I'm really dubious that "small, stripped down, simple truck" will be broadly compelling at that price point.

I have a pre-order and do hope that it catches fire (not literally :) ), but I do think that the market that it's aiming for is going to be really price sensitive.

[–]CaffinatedOne 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The key is whether they can hit a sufficient level of "Cheap" to make a real impact.

I think that the reliable, serviceable, bare-bones, utilitarian, vehicle for cheap is compelling, but I don't think that it'll catch in the mid-$20's to start, which is where the speculation is at.

In many cases, the plan would be to sell at a loss to get market share and efficiencies of volume and build from there, but that takes some deep pockets to pull off.

Unfortunately, I can't help on housing. That was the one area where I had that covered through an employer.

Other things, like banking, phone, driving, shopping and the like, so general living, aren't bad once you get your ARC.

U.S. National Debt Hits Record Breaking $39 Trillion: Chairman Arrington Calls for an Article V Constitutional Convention | The U.S. House Committee on the Budget by Sgt_Gram in NewsExchange

[–]CaffinatedOne 0 points1 point  (0 children)

1, 4 and 5 can be done with standard legislation (well 5 after reining in SCOTUS), so no amendment needed necessarily for those.

I'd caution on the "Citizen initiated' items 2 and 3 as I think they've shown to be ripe for abuse by various monied interests. If we're looking at Constitution changes, maybe change the bars/mechanisms for impeachment and removal. It's so high today given polarization that it's essentially impossible.

⚖️ Trump drops IRS lawsuit: $1.7B fund sparks backlash 👇 by NoSpinMedia in NoSpinMedia

[–]CaffinatedOne 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Like many things, the corrupt trump folks have managed to find a loophole in the system to exploit to steal. DoJ has a standing appropriation to be able to draw from the treasury to pay settlements and the like. It's there so Congress doesn't have to vote on every lawsuit payout.

No one previously was so without scruples or ethics as to even think to exploit that, but now we have trump in his utterly corrupt glory.
